  7. Abstract:
  8. Since, seepage- related problems account for more than forty percents of earth dams’ failure, seepage analysis is one of the most important stages in designing of embankment dams. The most usual method of making a seepage analysis is doing a two dimensional one in the maximum cross- section and generalizing its results to the third dimension. As a natural consequence of this kind of seepage analysis, the effect of valley shape and material properties’ changes along the third dimension are ignored and so, in narrow valleys where the cross-section changes along longitude profile or in the specific cases of nonhomogeneity, using this kind of analysis can make false results. Besides, because of the far simplicity of the two dimensional analysis, using a three dimensional seepage analysis in dams which show 2D behavior is not economic. So, knowing the difference between 2D and 3D seepage analyses results is important. In this research, seepage analysis by the aid of finite element method and the assumption of saturated and unsaturated zones, are generated in ZAGROS, SHIAN and HAALEH dams. According to the analyses, in the 2D transient analysis, the results of ZAGROS and SHIAN dams show acceptable conformity with the instrumentings’ data because of their 2D geometry and in SHIAN dam, as time elapses, the 2D steady analysis shows a decreasing difference with the instrumentings’ data. In HAALEH dam which has been constructed in a narrow valley, only the results of 3D analysis are acceptable and a fairly great difference can be seen between the results of 2D and 3D analyses, results
