  8. High pressure natural gas is transported from processing plants to end users via a network of natural gas system. Pressure reduction along the transport system is compensated in compressor stations. High pressure natural gas flows in to distribution network in demand center which operates at medium pressure. Medium pressure gas is transferred to end users who can use natural gas with low pressure. Therefore, pressure of natural gas is reduced consequently when gas flows from transport systems to distribution network and end users. Work is dissipated during pressure reduction which otherwise could be converted in to power.A technology that could be utilized for conversion of pressure work in to power is turbo expander. It is estimated that the potential of work recovery with the help of turbo expander may reach 2000MW in the Iranian natural gas network. Utilization of work potential requires development of turbo expander technology. Formulation of a technology roadmap for developing turbo expander has been the subjected at the present research work.Development and application of a technology is conditioned by the availability of appropriate infrastructures (including R&D), human resource development and industrial capability in the country. An analysis of social and technical infrastructures has been carried out in the presented work and adequacy of the present infrastructures has been reviewed. Then, the assessment present situation is followed by formulation of a roadmap for development and industrial application of turbo expander systems. Technical gaps and alternative process of technology development are than summarized and systematic implementation of roadmap is outlined
