In the near future, it is expected that the microgrids become widespreed due to issues such as reliability, increased penetration of renewable energy sources and distributed generation, environmental concerns and shortage of fossil fuels. Different control methods have been suggested to regulate the frequency and voltage of the system so that these quantities remain in their permissible range upon islanding and in the islanded operation mode. However, in emergency conditions, such as shortage of generated power compared to the load of microgrid, frequency or voltage reduction occures due to imbalance. In this situation, it is invitable to shed extra load to maintain the stability and operation continuity of the microgrid. Diagnosis of the unadjustable imbalance between production and consumption is the most important issue before load shedding. Prioritization of the loads for shedding based on frequency deviation and using the rate of change of frequency to detect the occurrence of imbalance, and determination of the amount of load to be shed based on frequency and voltage criteria are the other important issues. The objective of this thesis is to propose a safe and accurate approach to detect the power deficit and to provide appropriate criteria to shed minimum amount of load to preserve the microgrid stability. To do this, available microgrid control approaches are investigated and then an appropriate load shedding method is proposed. To examine the performance of this method, it is implemented on a small microgrid simulated in Simulink/MATLAB environment
