This study investigates the reliability analysis of mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall and takes into account the uncertainty associated in the mechanical properties of soil and geogrid, the magnetude of surcharge load and the soil-geosynthetic interface friction angle. In addition, the effect of number, length and place of the geogrid layers on the performance of this wall has been evaluated. The failure modes related to external stability, internal stability and horizontal displacement of the wall were considerd. In order to determine the probabilistic characteristics and the probability distribution function of soil and soil-geosynthetic interface friction angle, direct shear test and pullout test were conducted on more than 200 samples, respectively. The tensile test was also carried out on more than 100 samples to determine the probabilistic characteristics of geogrid.A finite element model of an MSE wall was performed and verified based on field measurements of a reference wall to approximate performance functions. The failure probability of the MSE wall was determined using first-order second-moment (FOSM), first-order reliability method (FORM), and improved Latin hypercube sampling (iLHS) method, considering external and internal stability, in addition to, horizontal wall displacement limit state. A sensitivity analysis was then performed through FOSM and FORM, and the most effective random variables were determined due to each limit state function. Futhermore, the seismic performance of MSE wall has been investigated using the incremental dynamic analysis. This research tries to have a significant role in optimal and safe design of MSE wall by finding the importance of each random variable in performance of this structure
