  8. New product development (NPD) is a crucial process in maintaining a company’s competitive position and succeeding in dynamic markets. One of contemporary trends in the global economy is mass customisation that bases on modifications of existing products instead of designing everything as a new project. Product development can be achieved in design, planning or production phases. Specifications of previous products deliver information of design, cost and time of past NPD projects that can be the basis for developing new products. Given the low chance of technical success, market change and high cost research, market demand, product development management is important to increase the quality of new products and reduce the time and cost of its production. Therefore, as stated, the most important factors in the development of product should be the estimated cost of product development process. Methods for estimating product costs can be divided into four groups: Intuitive techniques, Analogical techniques, Parametric mothods and Analytical techniques. One of the well known methods among Intuitive techniques is the case-based reasoning. Case-based argumentation uses the past information and adapts its features to the new design, designing a new product. Therefore, this method meets the cost of new products with the help of information stored in the past. The features that distinguish this method from other methods have led to a different investigation to improve the cost estimation and recovery of the closest case to the new one, which has redefined this case-based reasoning with algorithms such as the decision tree, Regression, neural network and genetics.
    The thesis focuses on research in the field of product development cost estimation, especially in design and planning phases, and has conducted a comprehensive literature review in this area. In addition, based on the application of the case-based reasoning approach, a novel idea for the production scenarios is created using the Opitz code. The Opitz code presented in this study is based on the assumptions presented in the model. The general approach of this research is to use the genetic algorithm to retrieve the similar scenarioes. Further analysis of the sensitivity is conducted on the outputs of the genetic algorithm to validate the proposed mechanism
