  7. Abstract:
  8. The lateral force & its control has always been a great concern to structural designers. Based on the project’s location, this force can be either earthquake or wind force. In our country, Iran, the earthquake force is usually the dominant one. Of the most important differences between these two kinds of forces, we may point out the cyclic characteristics and nature of earthquake forces. One can choose different strategies to face the earthquake force including the use of dampers. Dampers exist in vast varieties of different categories which we will briefly explain in this thesis. Dampers can be used on their own or in combination with other lateral force resistance systems like bracings or shear walls. In this thesis, we report the results of some monotonic and cyclic tests carried out on scaled models of steel plate shear walls in which friction dampers were adopted and then we will analyse their lateral reaction, energy dissipation and … . All the specimens tested during this work were in the size of 600x450x2.5 mm3. In the first series of the tests, we carried out some monotonic tests. Using different torques of values 20 Nm, 30 Nm and 40 Nm for bolting the specimens, they all remained elastic. It was observed that 40 Nm torque was a little high for such specimens because of the increased friction that wouldn’t allow it to drift in the desired manner without forcing the specimen to enter the plastic zone. After the detailed tests, one monotonic test was carried out by applying large displacement to a frictionless specimen and we observed the plastic behavior. These yielding characteristics are required in order to determine the amplitudes of various stages of cyclic tests. Finally, two cyclic tests were carried out. The slotted holes on both sides of the specimens were the only difference these two tests had. On the two final chapters of the thesis, we have reported the total energy dissipated in each individual test
