  7. Abstract:
  8. The ever-growing prevalence of gas-fired power plants has paved the way for significant changes in the electrical energy network applications in recent years. As a result, the mutual dependency between natural gas distribution systems and electrical energy distribution systems has been intensified. Thus, the integrated gas and electrical distribution system is faced with notable threats from natural disasters that can lead to disruptions in meeting the critical demands of the consumers as well as high monetary costs. The occurrence of unpredicted natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, and hurricanes affects the performance of energy infrastructures. Given the low possibility of these conditions, reliability studies are unable to guarantee whether an energy infrastructure can react properly to these calamities or not. The investigation of the ability that energy infrastructures such as natural gas and electrical systems have in confronting these phenomena, is categorized as resilience studies.Consequently, to propose a development plan for integrated natural gas and electrical distribution system that is reliable in dealing with certain threats and resilient in facing with natural disasters such as earthquakes, is a pivotal issue of concern. The objective in the present study is to propose an integrated planning strategy to improve the resilience of electrical distribution networks and natural gas transfer systems after the occurrence of earthquake. To this end, the optimal solutions for the improvement of interdependent electricity and natural gas systems are presented, which imply the benefits of an integrated planning for these system. This has been done through taking into account the budget for development, energy consumption by the buses in the network, and possible damages caused by earthquake- especially those imposed separately on electrical distribution lines and underground gas transfer pipelines
