  7. Abstract:
  8. Stop-skipping and timetable synchronization in a transit network for subway operation are two effective strategies to reduce passengers' total travel time. Most of the current research on the topic does not consider stop-skipping strategy and timetable synchronization simultaneously. This paper proposes a mixed-integer programming model based on passenger smart-card data concerning the trains' capacity to minimize passengers' total waiting time and in-vehicle time and maximize the number of passengers who successfully reach their destination. Since increasing the number of trains, stations, or the study horizon, exponentially increase the size of the problem, seeking practical methods to solve real-sized problems was a must. Therefore, a genetic algorithm (GA) was used to solve the model. In order to evaluate the performance of the model and used algorithm, a hypothetical example is solved with GAMS (CPLEX), then the results are compared to the results of GA. Finally, a large-scale, real-life case study based on the Tehran rail transit network is used to evaluate the proposed models in this study and the genetic algorithm approach. The results indicate that the proposed model reduces each passenger's travel time by about 4.78% in peak hour and about 3.61% in an off-peak hour. It also reduces the passenger transfer waiting time by about 32.4% in peak hour and about 30.23% in an off-peak hour. And it maximizes the number of passengers who reach their destination successfully
