  7. Abstract:
  8. One of the lateral-load bearing systems that has been recommended since almost 40 years ago is the steel plate shear wall (SPSW) system, which consists of a steel plate surrounded by beams and columns in each story. As for the performance of SPSWs, it is assumed that the boundary members of the wall’s plate, i.e. beams and columns, have sufficient stiffness and strength, so that they would not yield by the tensile stresses exerted due to the post-buckling behavior of the plate (tension field); and the global stability of the structure is still maintained. This assumption leads to significantly increased dimensions of the sections applied in the wall’s boundary members, particularly its side columns, which renders the system economically unviable. In this research, the reduction rate in the stresses applied to the side columns of the wall and its effect on the seismic performance of the structure was investigated by implementing strip openings along the sides of the wall and by detaching part of its connection to the columns. Firstly, the equations and results of various studies in the field of SPSWs were gathered, after which a shear wall laboratory specimen considered by a number of researchers was modeled via ABAQUS; and the results were then compared to those of the laboratory model for an initial verification. As a parametric study, several models with strip openings and different dimensions were modeled in ABAQUS. Lastly, a number of concluding remarks were presented, which can be summarized by the fact that creating strip openings will have desirable implications from some perspectives. As the opening length increases, the hysteresis curve, pushover curve, energy absorption, initial and final stiffness, ductility, angle of tensile field and stress applied from the tensile field to the columns decrease and the response modification factor increases
