    , Article International Journal of Engineering, Transactions B: Applications ; Volume 23, Issue 2 , 2010 , Pages 107-114 ; 1728-144X (ISSN) Alemzadeh, I ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Pectin from two different plant sources: apple and sugar beet was studied. Apple pectin was modified by chemical treatments such as: acid, alkali and ammonia, so as to obtain an ester level equal to or less than 50 %, which is described as low methoxyl (LM) pectin. LM pectin form gels with significant characteristic. In this study, de-esterification of apple pectin with acid treatment resulted in gel specification with higher molecular weight and viscosity. Acid treatment resulted in pectin with average molecular weight of 32000 Dalton. Pectin was extracted from sugar beet pulp by acid and alkali treatments. The quality of gel formation and water uptake was improved using sugar source...

Stimulating Asphaltenic Oil Reservoirs, Experimental Investigation of Asphaltenic Sludge Formation to Plan Its Prevention

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sisakhti, Hossein (Author) ; Ayatollahi, Shahaboddin (Supervisor) ; Shad, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Formation damage is probable to occur while drilling, work-over operations, and well completion in near wellbore zone due to different reasons; which leads to excess pressure drop through this area. Well stimulation operations are proposed to remove these damages and improve oil production; among which, acidizing is known as a traditional applicable method to stimulate oil and gas wells. Although this approach is accepted and chosen as a well stimulation method to remove formation damages, its poor design and implementation results in new formation damages. One of these arises when acid contacts asphaltic oil, which causes asphaltene particle instability and asphaltic sludge rapid...

    Abstract
Hydrogen storage capacities of raw, oxidized, purified and Fe-doped multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were studied by electrochemical method. Based on transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopic data, thermal oxidation removed defective graphite shells at the outer walls of MWCNTs. The analysis results indicated that the acid treatment dissolved most of the catalysts and opened some tips of the MWCNTs. Thermal gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry results illustrated that by oxidation and purification of MWCNTs, the weight loss peak shifts toward a higher temperature. N2 adsorption isotherms of the purified and oxidized MWCNTs showed an increase in N2...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahmadizadeh, Mansour (Author) ; Ayatollahi, Shahabeddin (Supervisor) ; Ghotbi, Sirous (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Matrix acidizing as a well stimulation technique is performed to increase the production index by increasing the permeability and removing the formation damage in the near wellbore region. However, several challenges such as corrosion of the tubulars and iron precipitation in the formation are hindering this process. To encounter these challenges, different chemicals, or additives, such as corrosion inhibitors and iron control agents are added to the acid solution. Carbonate acidizing has been carried out using HCl-based stimulation fluids for decades. However, at high temperatures, HCl does not produce satisfactory results because of its fast reaction, acid penetration, and hence surface...

Experimental Investigation of Acidizing in Natural Fractured Carbonates to the Optimum Injection Condition

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sheikhi, Sobhan (Author) ; Ayatollahi, Shahabodin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In many cases, oil and gas extraction from reservoirs due to damage and permeability reduction near wellbore is lower than optimum level and reduces the flow of oil into the well. In fact, formation damage is the collapse of natural condition of reservoirs, In addition to delaying production and increasing costs, it causes early desertification of wells. Well stimulation methods are used to solve this problem and increase production. One of the most effective ways to increase the production of wells is well acidizing. In this study, the acid performance of the fractured carbonate reservoirs has been investigated. In this type of reservoirs, due to the existence of high permeable paths of the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rabiee, Amir Hossein (Author) ; Shad, Saeed (Supervisor) ; Bazargan, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Today, acidizing is one of the most important methods for stimulation and increasing the productivity of oil and gas wells. In Iran and other oil-rich countries, a large amount of money is invested every year in acidizing operations. Due to complex nature of acidizing of an oil formation, it’s very difficult to design an optimized and successful operation. Therefore, many research projects have been performed for understanding the physics of the dissolution of reservoir rock by acid and the behavior of wormholes and secondary reactions. The most important prerequisite of these researches is the perfect knowledge of acid and mineral reaction kinetics. One of the most common experiments to...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Noorali Kheirzad, Mohammad Amin (Author) ; Ghotbi, Cyrus (Supervisor) ; Taghikhani, Vahid (Supervisor) ; Badakhshan, Amir (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The acid fracturing process is a thermal, hydraulic, mechanical, geochemical and geomechanical coupled phenomena in which the behavior of these variables are interrelated. To model the flow behavior of an acid into a fracture, mass and momentum balance equations are used to draw 3D velocity and pressure profiles. Part of the fluid diffuses or leaks off into the fracture walls and dissolves part of the fracture face.An acid balance equation is used to draw the concentration profile of the acid and to account for the quantity of rock dissolved. An algorithm is developed for this process to generate the final conductivity distribution after fracture closure. The objective of modeling acid...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Najmedini, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Ghotbi, Sirous (Supervisor) ; Bazargan, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Formation acidizing is one of the best well stimulation methods to remove reservoir damage and improve recovery of oil and gas well. The proper design of acidizing operations can significantly improve the production of a formation. In the meantime, causing formation damage and precipitation in oil flowlines, which may be caused by the incompatibility of the stimulation fluid with the reservoir fluid and rocks, is one of the most serious problems in the operation, which reduces permeability and oil/gas production. As a result, the success of the acidizing operation requires to study the interaction of components of operation (acid, reservoir water, formation rock, and acid additive)...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Alizadeh Kiapi, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Fatemi, Mobeen (Supervisor) ; Bazargan, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this work, an improved model for simulating carbonate core acidizing, with the ability of correctly modeling fluid diversion in dual-core experiments is created based on an existing two-scale continuum model. The improvements are applied on the momentum transfer equation, continuity equation, pore-scale structure-property relations and fluid rheology model. Also a more realistic injection scenario and geometry configuration are presented for simulating the diversion experiments. The Darcy-Brinkman-Stokes equation is implemented instead of Darcy’s equation and the continuity equation is modified by adding the mass source term. A global rheology model is developed capable of capturing exact...

Pore Network Modelling of Matrix Acidizing of Carbonate Rocks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khodaiy Arbat, Mohammad (Author) ; Jamshidi, Saeed (Supervisor) ; Masihi, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Reactive flow through porous media is a phenomenon of high importance in various study subjects i.e. groundwater, mining, geology, and petroleum reservoirs. In petroleum engineering, a related topic to this phenomenon is the dissolution of the rock matrix due to acidizing. Near_wellbore carbonate rock acidizing has been used for decades in the petroleum industry to enhance the productivity of the well. Optimal injection rate is a key question in such operations. Various models have been used to simulate reactive flow in porous media many of which are continuum-scale that face significant uncertainty regarding the pore-scale nature of the flow, mass transfer, reaction, and subsequent changes...

Geochemical Simulation of Acidizing Sandstone Core Samples

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khojasteh Mehr, Mohammad (Author) ; Bazargan, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Acidizing is one of the widely used practices of formation damage remediation. The success of this rather expensive job depends on the precise design and operation. Though, improper execution of an acid job, not only does not improve the formation damage but also can contribute to even more damage itself. For this purpose, it is critically important to thoroughly design an acidizing job conducting extensive lab experiments and utilizing numerical tools before operation in order for a successful acidizing. Unlike, carbonate acidizing, the chemistry of sandstone acidizing is very complex and challenging because of the wide variety of minerals and aqueous species present in the system. Hence, a...

CFD Simulation of Rotating Disk Apparatus for Determining Reaction Equation Parameters of VES and Carbonate Minerals

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghasemi, Esmaeil (Author) ; Bazargan, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Jamshidi, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Acidizing operation is performed in oil and gas reservoirs with the aim of overcoming formation damages, increasing permeability and reducing skin factor. In carbonate reservoir, the hydrochloric acid increases the permeability of the areas around the well to a more than its initial value by dissolving part of the formation minerals. Considering that most of Iran's oil and gas reservoirs are in the category of carbonate reservoirs, it is important to study the reaction kinetics of carbonate minerals and acids used in acidizing operation. The complex and multifactorial nature of the acidizing operation in the reservoirs has made it very difficult to design a successful and optimal operation....
