    , Article Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences ; Vol. 21, issue. 5 , 2013 , p. 1284-1301 ; ISSN: 13000632 Aien, M ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Aminifar, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The unprecedented increasing penetration of distributed energy resources, mainly harvesting renewable energies, is a direct result of environmental concerns. These types of energy resources bring about more uncertainties in the power system and, consequently, necessitate probabilistic analyses of the system performance. This paper develops a new approach for probabilistic optimal power flow (P-OPF) by adapting the unscented transformation (UT) method. The heart of the proposed method lies in how to produce the sampling points. Appropriate sample points are chosen to perform the P-OPF with a high degree of accuracy and less computational burden in comparison with the features of other...

    Abstract
Electric distribution network is undergoing fundamental transition from conventional top-down structure to an environment where local prosumers, as transactive agents, are able to form peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trades among themselves. One of the challenges in such networks is allocating the incurred losses to the peers of the transactive market through a transparent and fair framework. In this article, it is demonstrated that the existing methods of loss allocation may cause a cross-subsidization problem when it comes to transactive energy systems, and a solution is offered to the problem. Furthermore, a novel transactive market mechanism is proposed which deploys the loss allocated to each...

Reliability study of HV substations equipped with the fault current limiter

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Vol. 27, issue. 2 , 2012 , p. 610-617 ; ISSN: 8858977 Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Aminifar, F ; Rahmati, I ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Of particular interest to restrict the short-circuit level of interconnected power systems is to exploit fault current limiter (FCL) technologies. FCLs let the system planners devise new reliable and rather economical substation configurations and provide the possibility of proposing a promising cost-effective and prompt solution to the fault current over duty problem in the existing substations. This paper attempts to assess reliability of substation architectures accommodating the FCL operation and, besides, numerically investigates the FCL's impacts on the substation reliability indices. In order to clarify the proposed approach, two case studies with and without FCL are analyzed and...

Reliability modeling of run-of-the-river power plants in power system adequacy studies

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy ; Vol. 5, issue. 4 , 2014 , p. 1278-1286 ; ISSN: 19493029 Khalilzadeh, E ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Aminifar, F ; Ghaedi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Deployment of renewable energies for the electricity generation is on the rise around the world, among which is the run-of-the-river (ROR) power plant whose output power is variable throughout the year depending on the water flow of the respective river. The inherent uncertainty associated with renewable energy resources calls for new stochastic modeling approaches to measure the impacts of using these energies on the power system performance. This paper develops an analytical reliability model for ROR power plants. The model is based on the state-space analysis and is devised with the intention of being used in adequacy studies of power systems. Failure of related components and the...

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Vol. 25, issue. 3 , 2010 , p. 1962-1970 ; ISSN: 8858977 Zadkhast, S ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Aminifar, F ; Billinton, R ; Faried, S. O ; Edris, A. -A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Reliability evaluation of multiterminal HVDC systems has received very little attention in the past. This paper presents reliability modeling and analysis of an HVDC transmission system incorporating a voltage-sourced converter (VSC) tapping station. The use of VSC tapping stations enables the supply of power along the route to areas with comparatively little consumption. In this paper, a comprehensive detailed reliability model is developed and then converted to a manageable and computationally efficient model. Using this equivalent reliability model, various reliability indices are calculated at the load point of the system and the impacts of the VSC tapping station on these indices are...

    Abstract
This paper proposes a stochastic mixed-integer programming (SMIP) model for the reliability-constrained unit commitment (RCUC) problem. The major objective of the paper is to examine both features of accuracy and efficiency of the proposed SMIP model of RCUC. The spinning reserve of generating units is considered as the only available reserve provision resource; however, the proposed formulation can be readily extended to comprise the other kind of reserve facilities. Expected load not served (ELNS) and loss of load probability (LOLP) are accommodated as the reliability constraints. Binding either or both reliability indices ensures the security of operation incorporating the stochastic...

Reliability-based maintenance scheduling of generating units in restructured power systems

    , Article Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences ; Vol. 22, issue. 5 , 2014 , p. 1147-1158 ; ISSN: 13000632 Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Aminifar, F ; Shahzadeh, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Maintenance scheduling of generating units in restructured power systems is a collaborative and interactive process between independent system operators (ISOs) and generating companies (GENCOs). The ISO should comply with GENCO maintenance preferences subject to targeted system reliability levels. This process might be multistage since the admission of all initial unit outage requests may threaten system reliability. Hence, the ISO accepts some proposals and determines alternatives for the remaining units. The GENCOs are then allowed to confirm the alternatives or revise them. In this paper the ISO problem of generating unit maintenance scheduling is tackled. The objective function is to...

Reliability assessment of protective relays in harmonic-polluted power systems

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Volume 32, Issue 1 , 2017 , Pages 556-564 ; 08858977 (ISSN) Jedrzejczak, J ; Anders, G. J ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Farzin, H ; Aminifar, F ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2017
    Abstract
Proliferation of distributed generations (DGs) and power-electronics-based loads is bringing about more harmonic-polluted power signals. While some failures may occur as a consequence of nonsinusoidal current or voltage waveforms, existing reliability models of protection relays have not taken the harmonic-related failures into consideration. This paper develops a comprehensive Markov reliability model to categorize the possible functional states of a component, say a transmission line, protected by a relay, operating in a harmonic-polluted environment. In order to make the proposed model practically tractable, it is further simplified in two ways, through merging the states of the same...

    Abstract
The deployment of flexible ac transmission system (FACTS) devices, despite miscellaneous benefits and applications, has been restricted mainly due to their large investment costs. Accordingly, the notion of distributed FACTS (D-FACTS) was recently proposed. Distributed static series compensators (DSSCs), as a new member of D-FACTS, are directly clamped to conductors of transmission lines. The possibility of controlling the compensation rate of DSSCs from the control center affords the active control of network power flow. This paper presents a comprehensive reliability model for the DSSC. The model is then reduced and a state-space representation is extracted for a transmission line with a...

    Abstract
With proliferation of single-phase rooftop photovoltaic (PV) panels, phase balancing in low voltage (LV) distribution feeders becomes the point of concern. In this way, identification of the hosting phase of connected single-phase customers and PV panels is a prerequisite. This paper proposes an optimization model for the phase identification problem. The objective is to minimize the summation of the absolute error between estimated and measured variables. Smart meters (SMs) data including active and reactive power absorptions/injections, nodal voltage magnitudes, and network configuration data form the input of the model. Potential errors in the input data are captured in the model while...

    Abstract
Proliferation of private distributed energy resources (DERs) necessitates devising effective energy management frameworks. This paper aims at establishing a decentralized model for the optimal dispatch of DERs in smart grids. The objective function is to minimize expected procurement cost of demand while profit of private DER owners is not sacrificed. Unit management modules (UMMs) embedded in private DERs and a central agent are autonomous agents of the model. The approach is iterative. In each iteration, the central agent announces to UMMs its procurement strategy, which contains purchased powers and their prices. Then, UMMs optimize and send back their output power and selling price...

    Abstract
Distributed static series compensator (DSSC) is a member of the family of distributed flexible AC transmission system devices that can be attached directly to conductors of transmission lines. DSSCs are able to compensate for and adjust the line reactance; thus, they could be widely used in stability-limited transmission systems. Owing to economic matters, the optimal placement of DSSCs is of a great interest from practical viewpoints. This study presents an approach to find the optimal locations of DSSCs to enhance the system loadability and reliability using the DC load flow model. The optimisation problem is solved using the mixed-integer linear programming. A compromise between improving...

    Abstract
Online monitoring of inter-area oscillations is a vital need for secure operation of large-scale power systems. This paper aims at online estimation of inter-area modes by a novel stabilized fast transversal recursive least squares (SFTRLS) filter running on ambient power system data received from phasor measurement units. The SFTRLS filter is a fast finite-impulse response adaptive filter that is widely used in communication applications, such as noise and echo cancelation. It has the lowest computational complexity among least-squares filters and directly calculates coefficients of the parametric model selected for identifying a system under study. In the proposed method, the SFTRLS filter...
