Thermochemical Properties of Thymine & Deoxythymidine

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shakorian Fard, Mehdi (Author) ; Fattahi, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, there is no doubt about the importance of investigation of physicochemical properties of nucleosides in order to determine the structure of these biopolymers. Nucleotides have a variety of roles in cellular metabolism. They are the constituents of nucleic acids: deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA), the molecular repositories of genetic information. The metal ions play a significant role in several biological processes. Synthesis, replication, and cleavage of DNA and RNA as well as their structure integrity are affected by the presence of these ionized metals in the cell nucleus. To understand the role of cations in the biophysics of DNA, it is necessary first to...

A Study of Ascorbic Acid Electro-Oxidation Process on Silver and Silver Selenide Electrodes

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Majari Kasmaee, Laleh (Author) ; Gobal, Fereydoon (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Electrocatalytic oxidation of L-ascorbic acid (L-AA) on silver electrode in alkaline solutions was studied employing cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry and impedance spectroscopy techniques. In comparison to Pt, the onset potential for L-AA electro-oxidation process on Ag, in a solution containg 0.02 M L-AA and 0.5 M NaOH, was 0.1 V more negative. Also, L-AA oxidation current increased more than 900% at -0.26 V/SCE. According to voltammety and impedance spectropy findings, although hydroxide anion presence was vital for L-AA oxidation to occur, at potentials more positive than -0.2 V/SCE, hydroxide ion tends to inhibit the oxidation process. Studies on the L-AA oxidation process on Ag in...

    Abstract
During all operations in oil and gas reservoirs, it is possible to cause formation damage. These damages can greatly reduce the rate of production. One of the major damages that can seriously affect the performance of a reservoir is the damage caused by drilling fluid. The main purpose of this thesis is to study the main mechanisms of formation damage caused by water-based drilling fluid using a glass micromodel for the first time. An accurate understanding of the mechanisms of formation damage can provide a good understanding of the selection of the type and concentration of materials used, as well as appropriate methods to control and eliminate damages. for controlling the drilling fluid...

Doctor-Blade Printing of The Absorber Layer of Mixed-Cation and anion Perovskite Solar Cells in Ambient Air

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rahbari, Hamed (Author) ; Nemati, Ali (Supervisor) ; Taghavinia, Nima (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
In just a decade, perovskite solar cells have emerged as the next generation of photovoltaic technologies due to their high efficiency, low manufacturing cost, and easy fabrication methods compared to silicon solar cells. To date, highly efficient perovskite cells (with an efficiency of approximately 25.5%) have been fabricated on small substrates by a spin-coating process. In the spin coating process, perovskite precursor is spread on the substrate through shear force. However, the reproducibility of the cells coated with this method varies between research laboratories. Furthermore, since the solution is wasted during the deposition of the perovskite precursor on large substrates, a...

Monitoring the behaviour of anionic polymer-anionic surfactant stabilized foam in the absence and presence of oil: Bulk and bubble-scale experimental analyses

    , Article Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering ; Volume 97, Issue S1 , 2019 , Pages 1386-1398 ; 00084034 (ISSN) Veyskarami, M ; Hossein Ghazanfari, M ; Shafiei, Y ; Sharif University of Technology
    Wiley-Liss Inc  2019
    Abstract
The present study aims at monitoring the bulk and bubble-scale behaviour of anionic polyacrylamide-sodium dodecyl sulphate stabilized foam in the absence and presence of oil. Dynamic stability tests provided results indicating that polymer increases the foam dynamic stability and decreases the drainage. Oil slows down the drainage rate of polymer-surfactant foam. In the absence of oil, foam is drained gradually/smoothly whereas remarkable fluctuations are evident in drainage graphs when oil is present. The Hele-Shaw cell was employed to conduct bubble-scale as well as statistical analyses on how foam texture is influenced by a polymer-surfactant system and hydrocarbon. Bubble-scale analyses,...

    Abstract
Despite the various uses of hydrogels, one of their weaknesses is the poor gel strength. To overcome this restriction, the current study has focused on simultaneously employing an interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) structure and nanocomposite hydrogels. Through this approach, the influence of nanofiller in the single network and IPN hydrogel properties was also studied in detail. For this purpose, a novel full interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogel nanocomposite based on 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS)/acrylic acid (AA)–sodium acrylate (AANa) was synthesized in two steps through a facile solution polymerization with incorporation of modified bentonite (MBE) as...

    Abstract
The anionic surfactant linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) is a major chemical constituent of detergent formulation. Regarding the recalcitrant nature of sulfonoaromatic compounds, discharging these substances into wastewater collection systems is a real environmental issue. A study on LAS biodegradation based on bioelectrochemical treatment and in the form of developing a single-chamber microbial fuel cell with air cathode is reported in the present work. Pretreatment study showed LAS concentration of 60 ppm resulted in the highest anaerobic LAS removal of 57%; so, this concentration was chosen to run the MFC. After the sustained anodic biofilm was formed, LAS degradation rate during 4 days...

    Abstract
In this paper, the sorption of uranium onto nanoporous silica adsorbent in the presence of nitrate, sulfate, chloride, fluoride and phosphate was studied. The effect of contact time between the nanoporous sorbent and aqueous solution, pH and initial concentration of uranium was also investigated. Uranium sorption onto nanoporous silica adsorbent is a very fast process as sorption rate increases with pH increment. Optimum pH for uranium sorption was 4-8. Experimental sorption isotherm is successfully described by Langmuir and Freundlich models. The results obtained by batch experiments showed that the presence of high concentration of nitrate, sulfate, chloride and phosphate anions alone had...

Stereoelectronic effects: A simple yet powerful tool to manipulate anion affinity

    , Article Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry ; Volume 13, Issue 7 , Dec , 2015 , Pages 2170-2176 ; 14770520 (ISSN) Samet, M ; Fattahi, A ; Kass, S.R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Different strategies are employed in designing strong and selective anion receptors but stereoelectronic effects have been largely ignored. In this work, the stereo configuration of a non-interacting ether is found to have a large impact of more than two orders of magnitude on the binding of a rigid diol with tetrabutylammonium chloride in acetonitrile-d3. A favorable carbon-oxygen dipole and an intramolecular C-H⋯OH hydrogen bond in an equatorially substituted ether is found to be energetically more important than a stabilizing hydrogen bond in the corresponding axially oriented alcohol. IR spectroscopy is also used to probe the structures of the bound complexes and several binding motifs...
