Generalized nonlinear 3D Euler-Bernoulli beam theory

    , Article Iranian Journal of Science and Technology, Transaction B: Engineering ; Volume 32, Issue 1 , 2008 , Pages 1-12 ; 10286284 (ISSN) Zohoor, H ; Khorsandijou, S. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
The issue of the new elastic terms discovered in the nonlinear dynamic model of an enhanced nonlinear 3D Euler-Bernoulli beam is discussed. While the elastic orientation is negligible, the nonlinear dynamic model governing tension-compression, torsion and two spatial bendings is presented. Considering this model, some new elastic terms can be identified in the variation of elastic potential energy in each bending motion equation, and in each transverse shear force. Due to the new terms, each term of a bending equation and a transverse shear force, finds a counterpart in the other bending equation and transverse shear force, but the equations remain asymmetric. The new terms have arisen,...

Free vibration analysis of moderately thick trapezoidal symmetrically laminated plates with various combinations of boundary conditions

    , Article European Journal of Mechanics, A/Solids ; Volume 36 , 2012 , Pages 204-212 ; 09977538 (ISSN) Zamani, M ; Fallah, A ; Aghdam, M. M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this study, free vibration analysis of moderately thick symmetrically laminated general trapezoidal plates with various combinations of boundary conditions is investigated. The governing partial differential equations and boundary conditions for trapezoidal plate are obtained using first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) together with proper transformation from Cartesian system into trapezoidal coordinates. Generalized differential quadrature (GDQ) method is then employed to obtain solutions for the governing equations. Results of the GDQ method are compared and validated with available results in the literature which show accuracy and fast rate of convergence of the method. Effect of...

Assisted passive snake-like robots: Conception and dynamic modeling using Gibbs-Appell method

    , Article Robotica ; Volume 26, Issue 3 , 2008 , Pages 267-276 ; 02635747 (ISSN) Vossoughi, G ; Pendar, H ; Heidari, Z ; Mohammadi, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, we present a novel structure of a snake-like robot. This structure enables passive locomotion in snake-like robots. Dynamic equations are obtained for motion in a horizontal plane, using Gibbs-Appell method. Kinematic model of the robot include numerous nonholonomic constraints, which can be omitted at the beginning by choosing proper coordinates to describe the model in Gibbs-Appell framework. In such a case, dynamic equations will be significantly simplified, resulting in considerable reduction of simulation time. Simulation results show that, by proper selection of initial conditions, joint angles operate in a limit cycle and robot can locomote steadily on a passive...

    Abstract
In this paper, we analytically study the influences of using frequency domain approximation in numerical simulations of fractional order systems. The number and location of equilibria, and also the stability of these points, are compared between the original system and its frequency based approximated counterpart. It is shown that the original system and its approximation are not necessarily equivalent according to the number, location and stability of the fixed points. This problem can cause erroneous results in special cases. For instance, to prove the existence of chaos in fractional order systems, numerical simulations have been largely based on frequency domain approximations, but in...

Unreliability of frequency-domain approximation in recognising chaos in fractional-order systems

    , Article IET Signal Processing ; Volume 1, Issue 4 , December , 2007 , Pages 171-181 ; 17519675 (ISSN) Tavazoei, M. S ; Haeri, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
The effects of using frequency-domain approximation in numerical simulation of fractional-order systems are analytically studied. The main aim in the study is to determine the number, location and stability property of the equilibriums in a fractional-order system and its frequency-based approximating counterpart. The comparison shows that the original fractional-order system and its frequency-based approximation may differ from each other in some or all issues considered in the study. Unfortunately, these differences can lead to wrong consequences in some special cases such as detecting chaos in the fractional-order systems. It is shown that using the frequency-domain approximation methods...

Unconditionally stable fully explicit finite difference solution of solidification problems

    , Article Metallurgical and Materials Transactions B: Process Metallurgy and Materials Processing Science ; Volume 38, Issue 1 , 2007 , Pages 121-142 ; 10735615 (ISSN) Tavakoli, R ; Davami, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
An unconditionally stable fully explicit finite difference method for solution of conduction dominated phase-change problems is presented. This method is based on an asymmetric stable finite difference scheme for approximation of diffusion terms and application of the temperature recovery method as a phase-change modeling method. The computational cost of the presented method is the same as the explicit method per time-step, while it is free from time-step limitation due to stability criteria. It robustly handles isothermal and nonisothermal phase-change problems and is very efficient when the global temperature field is desirable (not accurate front position). The robustness, stability,...

On the characteristics and design of yielding elements used in steel-braced framed structures

    , Article Structural Design of Tall and Special Buildings ; Volume 22, Issue 2 , 2013 , Pages 179-191 ; 15417794 (ISSN) Tajammolian, H ; Mofid, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
In this paper, the behavior of a concentric braced frame structure equipped with yielding elements (YE), based on energy concepts, has been investigated extensively. When a severe earthquake occurs, energy will get absorbed through structural elements, which causes destruction. In order to reduce structural damage, input energy should be dissipated. YE will act as a fuse and absorb a great deal of earthquake input energy. Two one-story steel frames with different bay-to-height ratios (B/H < 1 and B/H > 1) are investigated. YE is located in the braces intersection. First, through studying the elastic behavior of the frame, the best location, angle and shape of YE is proposed. Subsequently, a...

    Abstract
Intermittency of height fluctuations in stationary state of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation with infinitesimal surface tension in 1+1 dimensions was discussed. Stochastic differential equations were used for the study. It was found that the probability density function [in 1+1] is independent of the coefficient of the linear term. When the random force with smooth spatial correlation was considered, the problem changed to a more complicated one

    Abstract
An investigation on the nonlinear vibrations of a system with two degrees of freedom when subjected to saturation is presented. The method is especially applied to a system that consists of a DC motor with a nonlinear controller and subjected to a harmonic forcing voltage. Approximate solutions are sought using the method of multiple scales. Also, singular point analysis is used to study stability of solutions. These findings are then compared with the corresponding numerical results. Good agreement between the two is observed

Prediction of temperature variations and kinetics of austenite phase change on the run-out table

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 421, Issue 1-2 , 2006 , Pages 260-267 ; 09215093 (ISSN) Serajzadeh, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
In this paper, a mathematical model has been developed to determine temperature distribution on the run-out table. The variational formulation and the finite element method have been employed to solve the governing conduction-convection equation. In order to avoid numerical instabilities due to the convection term, the heat transfer equation is first transformed to the standard form and then Raylieght-Ritz approximation technique and the finite element method have been utilized to solve the equation. To include the effect of phase transformation during cooling of steel, a second-order rate equation for describing austenite decomposition kinetics is coupled with the heat transfer model. A...

    Abstract
In this paper, a parallel algorithm for computing the roots of a given polynomial of degree n on a ring of processors is proposed. The algorithm implements Durand-Kerner's method and consists of two phases: initialization, and iteration. In the initialization phase all the necessary preparation steps are realized to start the parallel computation. It includes register initialization and initial approximation of roots requiring 3n-2 communications, 2 exponentiation, one multiplications, 6 divisions, and 4n-3 additions. In the iteration phase, these initial approximated roots are corrected repeatedly and converge to their accurate values. The iteration phase is composed of some iteration...

Application of the GV-MSA model to the electrolyte solutions containing mixed salts and mixed solvents

    , Article Fluid Phase Equilibria ; Volume 231, Issue 1 , 2005 , Pages 67-76 ; 03783812 (ISSN) Salimi, H. R ; Taghikhani, V ; Ghotbi, C ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
In this work the Ghotbi-Vera mean spherical approximation (GV-MSA) model, coupled with two different expressions for the cation-hydrated diameters, was used in predicting the mean ionic activity coefficients (MIAC) of electrolytes for a number of the mixed-solvent and mixed-salt electrolyte solutions at 25 °C. In all cases the cation diameters in solutions changed with concentration of electrolyte while the anion diameters were considered to be constant and equal to the corresponding Pauling diameters. In application of the GV-MSA model to the electrolyte systems, two different expressions were used for concentration dependency of cation-hydrated diameters, i.e., the GV-MSA1 and GV-MSA2...

An adaptive self-regular proximity based large-update IPM for LO

    Abstract
Primal-dual interior-point methods (IPMs) have shown their power in solving large classes of optimization problems. However, there is still a discrepancy between the practical behavior of these algorithms and their theoretical worst-case complexity results with respect to the update strategies of the duality gap parameter in the algorithm. Recently, this discrepancy was significantly reduced by Peng, J., Roos, C. and Terlaky, T., 2002, Self-Regularity: A New Paradigm for Primal-Dual Interior-Point Algorithms (Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press) who introduced a new family of self-regular (SR)-proximity functions based IPMs. In this paper, based on a class of SR proximities, we propose...

Electrical equivalent circuit of multi-mode flexible beams with piezoelectric elements

    , Article Journal of Intelligent Material Systems and Structures ; Volume 19, Issue 5 , 2008 , Pages 621-627 ; 1045389X (ISSN) Saghafi, M ; Meghdari, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
Surface mounted piezoelectric sensors and actuators on elastic structures are often connected to electrical networks. The coupled equations of motion of the elastic structure with piezoelectric elements are already well known. However, due to complex behavior of some electrical elements in the electrical network, it is not an easy task to obtain the integrated equations of the whole system. A good remedy for this problem is to take advantage of an equivalent electrical circuit (EEC) representation of the mechanical part, leading the entire system to be represented as an electrical circuit. In this study, the authors propose a new method for constructing the EEC. This method is based upon the...

    Abstract
The taping mode Atomic Force Microscopic (T-AFM) can be properly described by a sinusoidal excitation of its base and nonlinear potential interaction with sample. Thus the cantilever may cause chaotic behavior which decreases the performance of the sample topography. In this paper a nonlinear delayed feedback control.is proposed to control.chaos in a single mode approximation of a T-AFM system. Assuming model parameters uncertainties, the first order Unstable Periodic Orbits (UPOs) of the system is stabilized using the sliding nonlinear delayed feedback control. The effectiveness of the presented methods is numerically verified and the results show the high performance of the control.er

Fuzzy wavelet modeling using data clustering

    Abstract
In this paper, a novel approach for tuning the parameters of fuzzy wavelet systems which are used for modeling of nonlinear and complex systems is proposed. In fuzzy inference system, each fuzzy rule is analogous to a wavelet basis function multiplied by a coefficient. Using clustering techniques, the center of these basis functions are located in the detected center of clusters. In this way, not only the approximation accuracy is increased, but also the number of unknown parameters is decreased. The feasibility of the proposed method is shown by modeling two highly nonlinear functions. The comparison of the results using the proposed approach, with the previous schemes, shows the...

    Abstract
In this paper, a new non-linear D/A converter (DAC) is presented. This D/A converter uses neural network to approximate a sine function. It is targeted for direct digital frequency synthesizers in which the phase to sine amplitude conversion is usually performed using a ROM. Utilizing the proposed DAC, the power hungry ROM is removed. A design example is presented and the performance of the DAC is compared to the conventional method. The impact of non-idealities on the performance of the system is also investigated. © 2006 IEEE

    Abstract
In this paper, we consider the problem of optimum rate adaptation and power allocation to maximize the delay-limited throughput (DLT) in a time-correlated 2×1 MISO Rayleigh fading channel with Hybrid ARQ in Chase-Combining mode (HARQ-CC). To this aim, we have first formulated the DLT equation based on the outage probability for 2×1 MISO-HARQ channel. We show that exact analytical calculation of the outage probability is not tractable. Therefore, we approximate the outage probability using a log-normal approximation approach. Based on such approximation, optimal rate and power allocations are derived. Finally, using Monte-Carlo simulation, we show that the approximation method provides...
