Mathematical modeling and statistical analysis of second harmonic generation effects with thin and thick crystal in ultrahigh speed optically amplified digital lightwave communication system [electronic resource]

    , Article IEEE Journal of Lightwave Technology ; 2009 Vol. 27, No. 16, PP. 3438-3452 Matinfar, M. D ; Salehi, J.A ; Sharif University Of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, we present an in depth analysis and discussions on the behavior and performance of using either thin or thick second harmonic generation (SHG) crystals prior to photodetector in ultrahigh-speed optically amplified digital lightwave communication systems. Our study begins by considering a conventional low-speed optically amplified lightwave receiver and study its performance in ultrahigh-speed regime and show its substantially degraded behavior, indicating the need to use advance optical nonlinear elements such as SHG prior to photodetection. In studying SHG effects, we begin by discussing the mathematical models of thin and thick SHG crystals in the context of statistical...

    Abstract
The taping mode Atomic Force Microscopic (T-AFM) can be properly described by a sinusoidal excitation of its base and nonlinear potential interaction with sample. Thus the cantilever may cause chaotic behavior which decreases the performance of the sample topography. In this paper a nonlinear delayed feedback control.is proposed to control.chaos in a single mode approximation of a T-AFM system. Assuming model parameters uncertainties, the first order Unstable Periodic Orbits (UPOs) of the system is stabilized using the sliding nonlinear delayed feedback control. The effectiveness of the presented methods is numerically verified and the results show the high performance of the control.er

Introducing structural approximation method for modeling nanostructures

    , Article Journal of Computational and Theoretical Nanoscience ; Vol. 7, Issue 2 , 2010 , p. 423-428 ; ISSN: 15461955 Momeni, K ; Alasty, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this work a new method for analyzing nanostructured materials has been proposed to accelerate the simulations for solid crystalline materials. The proposed Structural Approximation Method (SAM) is based on Molecular Dynamics (MD) and the accuracy of the results can also be improved in a systematic manner by sacrificing the simulation speed. In this method a virtual material is used instead of the real one, which has less number of atoms and therefore fewer degrees of freedom, compared to the real material. The number of differential equations that must be integrated in order to specify the state of the system will decrease significantly, and the simulation speed increases. To generalize...

Finite volume coupling strategies for the solution of a Biot consolidation model

    , Article Computers and Geotechnics ; Vol. 55, issue , January , 2014 , p. 494-505 ; ISSN: 0266352X Asadi, R ; Ataie-Ashtiani, B ; Simmons, C. T ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper a finite volume (FV) numerical method is implemented to solve a Biot consolidation model with discontinuous coefficients. Our studies show that the FV scheme leads to a locally mass conservative approach which removes pressure oscillations especially along the interface between materials with different properties and yields higher accuracy for the flow and mechanics parameters. Then this numerical discretization is utilized to investigate different sequential strategies with various degrees of coupling including: iteratively, explicitly and loosely coupled methods. A comprehensive study is performed on the stability, accuracy and rate of convergence of all of these sequential...

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Information Theory ; Vol. 60, issue. 8 , 2014 , pp. 4799-4810 Motahari, A. S ; Oveis-Gharan, S ; Maddah-Ali, M. A ; Khandani, A. K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, we develop the machinery of real interference alignment. This machinery is extremely powerful in achieving the sum degrees of freedom (DoF) of single antenna systems. The scheme of real interference alignment is based on designing single-layer and multilayer constellations used for modulating information messages at the transmitters. We show that constellations can be aligned in a similar fashion as that of vectors in multiple antenna systems and space can be broken up into fractional dimensions. The performance analysis of the signaling scheme makes use of a recent result in the field of Diophantine approximation, which states that the convergence part of the...

On the characteristics and design of yielding elements used in steel-braced framed structures

    , Article Structural Design of Tall and Special Buildings ; Volume 22, Issue 2 , 2013 , Pages 179-191 ; 15417794 (ISSN) Tajammolian, H ; Mofid, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
In this paper, the behavior of a concentric braced frame structure equipped with yielding elements (YE), based on energy concepts, has been investigated extensively. When a severe earthquake occurs, energy will get absorbed through structural elements, which causes destruction. In order to reduce structural damage, input energy should be dissipated. YE will act as a fuse and absorb a great deal of earthquake input energy. Two one-story steel frames with different bay-to-height ratios (B/H < 1 and B/H > 1) are investigated. YE is located in the braces intersection. First, through studying the elastic behavior of the frame, the best location, angle and shape of YE is proposed. Subsequently, a...

    , Article IEEE International Conference on Communications, 10 June 2012 through 15 June 2012 ; 2012 , Pages 3915-3919 ; 15503607 (ISSN) ; 9781457720512 (E-ISBN) Rastegar, S. H ; Vakilinia, S ; Khalaj, B. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, we consider the problem of optimum rate adaptation and power allocation to maximize the delay-limited throughput (DLT) in a time-correlated 2×1 MISO Rayleigh fading channel with Hybrid ARQ in Chase-Combining mode (HARQ-CC). To this aim, we have first formulated the DLT equation based on the outage probability for 2×1 MISO-HARQ channel. We show that exact analytical calculation of the outage probability is not tractable. Therefore, we approximate the outage probability using a log-normal approximation approach. Based on such approximation, optimal rate and power allocations are derived. Finally, using Monte-Carlo simulation, we show that the approximation method provides...

    , Article Journal of Solid Mechanics ; Volume 4, Issue 2 , 2012 , Pages 114-127 ; 20083505 (ISSN) Faghidian, S. A ; Farrahi, G. H ; Smith, D. J ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
An analytical solution is presented that reconstructs residual stress field from limited and incomplete data. The inverse problem of reconstructing residual stresses is solved using an appropriate form of the airy stress function. This function is chosen to satisfy the stress equilibrium equations together with the boundary conditions for a domain within a convex polygon. The analytical solution is demonstrated by developing a reference solution from which selected "measurement" points are used. An artificial error is then randomly added to "measurement" points for studying the stability of the reconstruction method utilizing Tikhonov- Morozov regularization technique. It is found that there...

    Abstract
In this study, free vibration analysis of moderately thick symmetrically laminated general trapezoidal plates with various combinations of boundary conditions is investigated. Generalized differential quadrature (GDQ) method is then employed to obtain solutions for the governing equations. Results of the GDQ method are compared and validated with available results in the literature which show accuracy and fast rate of convergence of the method. Effect of...

    , Article 2012 3rd Power Electronics and Drive Systems Technology, PEDSTC 2012, 15 February 2012 through 16 February 2012 ; February , 2012 , Pages 170-174 ; 9781467301114 (ISBN) Mazaheri, B ; Mokhtari, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Controlling inverters with LC output filters in order to achieve a high quality desired output voltage or current is a challenging problem in power electronics. The LC filter and the binary nature of switch state variables increase the difficulty of achieving a single comprehensive model for the system. In this paper, a hybrid model is presented for a three-phase inverter with an LC output filter and a three-phase RL load. Then, the Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithm is applied to the model and a geometrical approximate method is used to fit the answers to the binary values. Simulation results for a sample system verify the usability of the method and the quality of the answers

    , Article Composite Structures ; Volume 93, Issue 12 , 2011 , Pages 3239-3251 ; 02638223 (ISSN) Hassani, A ; Hojjati, M. H ; Farrahi, G ; Alashti, R. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, distributions of stress and strain components of rotating disks with non-uniform thickness and material properties subjected to thermo-elastic loading under different boundary conditions are obtained by semi-exact methods of Liao's homotopy analysis method (HAM), Adomian's decomposition method and He's variational iteration method (VIM). The materials are assumed to be perfectly elastic and isotropic. A two dimensional plane stress analysis is used. The distribution of temperature over the disk radius is assumed to have power forms with the higher temperature at the outer surface. The results of the three methods are compared with those obtained by Runge-Kutta's numerical...

    , Article Key Engineering Materials, 22 March 2011 through 24 March 2011, Kuala Lumpur ; Volume 471-472 , 2011 , Pages 739-744 ; 10139826 (ISSN) ; 9783037850596 (ISBN) Fallah, A ; Kargarnovin, M. H ; Aghdam, M. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
In this paper, free vibration analysis of thin symmetrically laminated skew plates with fully clamped edges is investigated. The governing differential equation for skew plate which is a fourth order partial differential equation (PDE) is obtained by transforming the differential equation in Cartesian coordinates into skew coordinates. Based on the multi-term extended Kantorovich method (MTEKM) an efficient and accurate approximate closed-form solution is presented for the governing PDE. Application of the MTEKM reduces the governing PDE to a dual set of ordinary differential equations. These sets of equations are then solved with infinite power series solution, in an iterative manner until...

    Abstract
In this paper, model reference control of a fractional order system has been discussed. In order to control the fractional order plant, discrete-time approximation methods have been applied. Plant and reference model are discretized by Grünwald-Letnikov definition of the fractional order derivative using "Short Memory Principle". Unknown parameters of the fractional order system are appeared in the discrete time approximate model as combinations of parameters of the main system. The discrete time MRAC via RLS identification is modified to estimate the parameters and control the fractional order plant. Numerical results show the effectiveness of the proposed method of model reference adaptive...

    Abstract
Welding process is widely used in manufacturing of many important engineering components. For such structures, the most important problem is the development of residual stresses and distortion due to welding. Welding tensile residual stresses have a detrimental effect and play an important role in an industrial environment. Crack initiation and propagation in static or fatigue loading, or in stress corrosion can be greatly accelerated by welding tensile stresses. Practically, however, it is often very difficult to characterize the residual stress state completely, while the knowledge of the complete residual stress distribution in structures is essential for assessing their safety and...

Dynamic routing of real-time jobs among parallel EDF queues: A performance study

    , Article Computers and Electrical Engineering ; Volume 36, Issue 5 , 2010 , Pages 835-849 ; 00457906 (ISSN) Kargahi, M ; Movaghar, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
This paper introduces an analytical method for approximating the performance of a firm real-time system consisting of a number of parallel infinite-capacity single-server queues. The service discipline for the individual queues is earliest-deadline-first (EDF). Real-time jobs with exponentially distributed relative deadlines arrive according to a Poisson process. Jobs either all have deadlines until the beginning of service or deadlines until the end of service. Upon arrival, a job joins a queue according to a state-dependent stationary policy, where the state of the system is the number of jobs in each queue. Migration among the queues is not allowed. An important performance measure to...

    Abstract
The Burr XII distribution can closely approximate many other well-known probability density functions such as the normal, gamma, lognormal, exponential distributions as well as Pearson type I, II, V, VII, IX, X, XII families of distributions. Considering a wide range of shape and scale parameters of the Burr XII distribution, it can have an important role in reliability modeling, risk analysis and process capability estimation. However, estimating parameters of the Burr XII distribution can be a complicated task and the use of conventional methods such as maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) and moment method (MM) is not straightforward. Some tables to estimate Burr XII parameters have been...

    Abstract
Microchannels are at the forefront of today's cooling technologies. They are widely being considered for cooling of electronic devices and in micro heat exchanger systems due to their ease of manufacture. One issue which arises in the use of microchannels is related to the small length scale of the channel or channel cross-section. In this work, the maximum heat transfer and the optimum geometry for a given pressure loss have been calculated for forced convective heat transfer in microchannels of various cross-section having finite volume for laminar flow conditions. Solutions are presented for 10 different channel cross sections: parallel plate channel, circular duct, rectangular channel,...

    Abstract
In this paper, a second order accurate cell-centered finite volume method (FVM) is coupled with a finite element method (FEM) to solve the deformation of a saturated porous layer based on Biot's consolidation model. The proposed numerical technique is applied to the fully unstructured triangular grids to simulate actual geological formations. Also the least square algorithm is used to interpolate pressure at the vertices from the cell-center values. The stability of this numerical model is studied in comparison to the different FEMs through various...
