    Abstract
Fuzzy Control of rowing exercise using Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) concerns ankle, knee and hip joints. Muscular Modeling for each joint may contain two groups of muscles, namely extension and flexion. In the proposed method, joint controllers provide electrical stimulation pulses to the appropriate muscle group based on the trajectory error and according to a prescribed pattern designed for rowing exercise. Results indicate that the simulated Fuzzy control of desired angles closely match the experimental values for prescribed joints. Moreover, the robustness of the controller in presence of external disturbance is examined and the results show that the tracking of each joint...

    Abstract
Block method (BM) is a simple and fast method to solve inverse and forward problems in Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT). In BM, at first tissue is modeled by some blocks and it is assumed that each block has a specific conductivity. Then a medical image is constructed by calculation of its conductivity. Recently, a non-iterative linear inverse solution is presented for block method which we name 2D BM. In this paper, an efficient algorithm with new formulation is proposed to improve the 2D BM, and then several examples have been investigated to examine the proposed method. Results show that suggested algorithm achieves better outcomes in all situations, although its run time is...

    Abstract
Steady State Visual Evoked Potential (SSVEP) based Brain Computer Interfaces (BCI) can be great assistance for people suffering from physical disabilities due to their high accuracy, high speed, an acceptable number of possible targets, etc. Many researchers have managed to design such systems. Most of these BCIs utilize methods for frequency detection which cause the system to need a training phase for each new user, making the system a user-based one. That is why our goal was to design a BCI that not only has accuracy and speed comparable to similar systems, but also does not need any training phase and thus can be used by new users right away. Our final design got a mean accuracy of...

    , Article IFMBE Proceedings, 3 December 2008 through 6 December 2008 ; Volume 23 , 2009 , Pages 65-68 ; 16800737 (ISSN) ; 9783540928409 (ISBN) Zaheditochai, M ; Jaafar, R ; Zahedi, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Endothelial dysfunction, which can be noninvasively assessed by flow mediated vasodilation (FMD), predicts an increased rate of adverse cardiovascular events. The endothelial dysfunction is considered as a leading cause of development and progression of the atherosclerotic process. The main aim of this study is to review different non-invasive methods to assess the endothelial dysfunction and to propose enhancements to a new method based on photoplethysmography (PPG). First, non-invasive techniques developed for the evaluation of peripheral endothelial function (including the Doppler ultrasound (US)) will be reviewed. Although noninvasive, US -based techniques present a few disadvantages. To...

Researchers are faced with huge challenges when undertaking BME research projects in developing countries. Various administrative, technical, economic and even cultural barriers have to be overcome whereas the quality and quantity of the output has to be comparable with the developed world in order to make results publishable. This paper uses a real project context to highlight the major problems and the necessity of a holistic approach which would take into consideration all stakeholders interests. It is only by tackling problems such as relationship between academia-industry and administration efficiency at their root that significant progress can be achieved

System identification for characterization of the frequency response of an 'open-source' biomedical circuit

, Article IECBES 2014, Conference Proceedings - 2014 IEEE Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences: "Miri, Where Engineering in Medicine and Biology and Humanity Meet", 8 December 2014 through 10 December 2014 ; 2015 , Pages 225-229 ; 9781479940844 (ISBN) Zahedi, E ; Mohd Ali, M. A. B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, system identification techniques are applied to accurately characterize the frequency behavior of a commercially available but with unknown characteristics of a photoplethysmography (under the commercial name of Pulse Sensor). Although claimed to be open-source, the electronic schematic of this device does not allow for a full characterization of it. Therefore a second order auto-regressive with exogenous input model has been employed to find the frequency response of this system. An optical excitation circuit was developed to send a pseudo-random signal to the Pulse Sensor. Results show that the model is able to reproduce the output with a fitness of 89.7 %. The obtained...

    Abstract
The noninvasive fetal electrocardiogram (ECG) data available from Physionet data bank are suitable for developing fetal heart rate (FHR) detection algorithms. The data have been collected from single subject with a broad range of gestation weeks, and have a total data length of more than 9 hours arranged in 55 data sets. However, there are three additional data features which are currently not directly available from Physionet to facilitate the easy usage of these data: (1) the fetal peak visibility evaluation, (2) the gestation week, and (3) the data length. This article presents an improvement to the data bank by providing the additional features. The required pre-processing of the data is...

    , Article 2nd International Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedical Engineering, iCBBE 2008, Shanghai, 16 May 2008 through 18 May 2008 ; 2008 , Pages 2295-2298 ; 9781424417483 (ISBN) Yousefi Rizi, F ; Ahmadian, A ; Sahba, N ; Tavakoli, V ; Alirezaie, J ; Fatemizadeh, E ; Rezaie, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    IEEE Computer Society  2008
    Abstract
Segmentation of the human airway tree from volumetric computed tomography images is an important stage for many clinical applications such as virtual bronchoscopy. The main challenges of previously developed methods are to deal with two problems namely, leaking into the surrounding lung parenchyma during segmentation and the need to manually adjust the parameters. To overcome these problems, a multi-seeded fuzzy based region growing approach in conjuction with the spatial information of voxels is proposed. Comparison with a commonly used region growing segmentation algorithm shows that the proposed method retrieves more accurate results by achieving the specificity and sensitivity of 98.81%...

    Abstract
During recording lung sounds over the chest, heart sounds (HS) are also recorded and interferes with the inteipretation of lung sounds especially at low frequencies. Hence, several methods have been proposed to remove or reduce HS from lung sounds. The first step in most of the methods developed for HS reduction is to localize the segments of lung sounds including HS. In this study a method based on multi-resolution product of lung sounds wavelet coefficients was implemented for HS localization and its performance was compared to that of three methods developed for HS localization. The methods were tested on data from 6 healthy subjects recorded at low (7.5ml/s/kg) and medium (15ml/s/kg)...

Speckle noise reduction of ultrasound images using M-band wavelet transform and wiener filter in a homomorphic framework

    , Article 1st International Conference on BioMedical Engineering and Informatics, BMEI 2008, Sanya, Hainan, 27 May 2008 through 30 May 2008 ; Volume 2 , 2008 , Pages 510-515 ; 9780769531182 (ISBN) Vosoughi, A ; Shamsollahi, M. B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
In this paper we make use of M-band discrete wavelet transform (MDWT) and Wiener filter for speckle noise suppression of ultrasound images. Assuming multiplicative model for speckle noise, by applying logarithmic transform to noisy observation we convert multiplicative noise to additive one. Then, speckle noise can be reduced by taking the M-band wavelet transform of log-transformed observation and employing an adaptive thresholding technique. In order to improve the performance of this denosing approach, we propose a preprocessing stage which exploits Wiener filtering. Through this stage logtransformed observation is separated into two images and then each of these two images is denoised...

    Abstract
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive imaging modality that provides cross-sectional images from microstructures of tissues. This optical imaging system works based on Michelson interferometry principle and has intermediate resolution and penetration depth which makes it appropriate for imaging thin tissues such as skin and eye. OCT images suffer from three main artifacts that make images difficult to be analyzed. The first one is small grainy structures called speckle which degrade image quality and decreases axial and lateral resolution. The second one is light intensity attenuation which is a function of depth. It happens because of absorbing and scattering nature of tissue...

    Abstract
Sit-to-stand (STS) is an important functional task affected by low back pain (LBP). It requires fundamental coordination among all segments of the body to control important performance variables such as body's center of mass (CM) and head positions. This study was conducted to determine whether LBPs could coordinate their multiple joints to achieve the task stability to the same extent as healthy controls. About 11 non-specific chronic LBP and 12 healthy control subjects performed STS task at three postural difficulty levels: rigid surface - open eyes (RO), rigid surface - closed eyes (RC) and narrow surface - closed eyes (NC). Motion variability of seven body segments, CM and head positions...

    Abstract
Sit to stand (STS) is one of the most important activities of daily living that is shown to be affected in low back pain (LBP) patients. It requires a fundamental coordination action among all segments (DOFs) of the body in order to control important performance variables such as body's center of mass (CM) within base of support (BOS). In this study, possible differences in joint coordination and variability patterns between chronic LBP and healthy control subjects were investigated during STS task. Eleven adults with nonspecific chronic LBP and 12 healthy controls were recruited in the study. The participants performed the task in 3 exerimental conditions including: rigid surface, open eyes...

    Abstract
Ultrasound waves have been used in these days for most surgeries. They are applied to remove body tissues through surgery, for example in removing eye lens in cataract surgery. In a nutshell, a 3mm incision near cornea has been created and then after, a folded lens will be implanted and the patient can be released soon after the operation. The process is done by a vibrating metal tip in order to emulsify the lenses and the small particles will aspirate the debris through the hollow center of the tip. The problem of this procedure in some cases is thermal damage. This research addresses the aforementioned problem through an important parameter, different operating modes of the system. The...

    Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases contribute to one third of the world's mortality and morbidity, therefore early cardiovascular disease diagnosis, treatment and monitoring has become an important market. Ideally, an early diagnosis device will need to be accurate, non-invasive, low cost and operator independent. Interestingly enough, there is a wide range of non-invasive devices available, but each with a different degree of accuracy and ease of use. In this paper, an attempt has been made to review commercially available technologies for non-invasive vascular screening. As stiffness index, reflection index, augmentation index, central aortic pressure are most commonly used to screen for vascular...

Modeling of photoplethysmography signal for quantitative analysis of endothelial cells during reactive hyperemia

    , Article 2012 19th Iranian Conference of Biomedical Engineering, ICBME 2012 ; 2012 , Pages 174-178 ; 9781467331302 (ISBN) Shiri, F ; Firoozabadi, B ; Saidi, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
In this study, at first the cardiovascular system is modeled based on the 1D method and then the simulation of the reactive hyperemia experiment has been applied on the model. In this simulation, by applying a cuff at the brachial artery, the flow downstream of the cuff is occluded. Then with releasing the cuff immediately, a large amount of shear stress, about 4 times the basal amount, is applied downstream of the cuff and consequently to the endothelial cells in a very short moment. Considering a reported experimental transfer function between shear stress and vasodilation, the increase of the artery diameter due to the sudden increase of the shear stress is obtained. Finally, the...

    Abstract
Ammonia detoxification is one of the main functions of the liver results in production of urea. In this study ammonia elimination and urea production was simulated in a microchannel mimicking the hepatic porto central axis. Navier- Stockes equations along with convection equations were solved for the related species in the entire domain. Since the Reynolds number was small (~1) the fluid flow regime was laminar. Urea cycle was modeled regarding its four main enzymes. Twelve rate equations were also solved in order to obtain the concentration of each metabolites participating in urea cycle. Concentration of the urea reached its maximum ca. 1.2e-5 M at the end of the channel which is in good...
