Study on dynamic and mechanical characteristics of carbon fiber- and polyamide fiber-reinforced seismic isolators

    , Article Materials and Structures/Materiaux et Constructions ; Volume 47, Issue 3 , March , 2014 , Pages 447-457 ; ISSN: 13595997 Bakhshi, A ; Jafari, M. H ; Valadoust Tabrizi, V ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Seismic isolators are used to decrease the energy and forces of earthquakes. The weight of conventional steel-reinforced elastomeric isolators (SREIs) is high, mostly due to the use of multiple steel shim plates. On the contrary, the damping ratio of SREIs is relatively low. Accordingly, this research utilizes a new approach in which the steel shim plates are replaced by carbon and polyamide fibers. This study attempts to obtain the dynamic and mechanical properties of such carbon fiber- and polyamide fiber-reinforced elastomeric isolators, in comparison with SREIs. In this work, a number of specimens were initially designed and manufactured. Afterwards, compression and cyclic shear tests...

    2013
    Abstract
This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the flexural behavior of ten 10 × 15 × 120 (cm) steel reinforced high strength concrete beams under deflection control loading conditions. Test variable includes volumetric percentage of steel fibers (0%, 1.5%, 3%, 4%, 5%). The plain concrete strength was 30MPa. The monotonic concentrated load was applied at the center of the beam, the relative deflection was measured, and demec points were used to determine curvature of the beam. Load-deflection and moment-curvature diagrams have been obtained and plotted for each beam individually. Test results indicate that higher fiber content considerably improves flexural behavior and provides...

Exact formulations of non-linear planar and spatial Euler-Bernoulli beams with finite strains

    , Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science ; Volume 226, Issue 5 , 2012 , Pages 1225-1236 ; 09544062 (ISSN) Abedinnasab, M. H ; Zohoor, H ; Yoon, Y. J ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Using Hamilton's principle, exact equations of motion for non-linear planar and spatial Euler-Bernoulli beams are derived. In the existing non-linear Euler-Bernoulli beam formulations, some elastic terms are dropped by differentiation from the incomplete Green-Lagrange strain tensor followed by negligible elastic deformations of cross-sectional frame. On the other hand, in this article, the exact strain field concerning considerable elastic deformations of cross-sectional frame is used as a source in differentiations. As a result, the achieved closed-form equations are exact and more accurate than formerly reported equations in the literature. Moreover, the applicable dynamic model of...

Studies on the friction and wear characteristics of rubber-based friction materials containing carbon and cellulose fibers

    , Article Journal of Materials Science ; Volume 46, Issue 6 , 2011 , Pages 1890-1901 ; 00222461 (ISSN) Shojaei, A ; Arjmand, M ; Saffar, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The present study was an attempt to examine the effects of carbon and cellulose fibers on the tribological characteristics of rubber-based friction materials (RBFMs). A fiber free RBFM as a reference material and a series of fiber included RBFMs at different volume fractions were prepared by two-roll mill. The friction tests were per-formed at different sliding velocities and various drum temperatures. The mechanical properties and surface microstructure of friction specimens were also examined. It was revealed that the carbon fiber infiuences slightly the coefficient of friction (COF) of RBFM but it improves the wear resistance and the fade behavior considerably. It reduces the drum...

Rheological modeling of suspensions of fibrous nanoparticles in polymeric viscoelastic media

    , Article Journal of Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics ; Volume 223 , 2015 , Pages 240-248 ; 03770257 (ISSN) Sodeifian, G ; Ramazani, S. A. A ; Ranjbari, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A new rheological model is developed to predict viscous and elastic behavior of concentrated suspensions of short fiber and one dimensional nanoparticles in steady and transient shear flows, simultaneously. The previously presented models cannot predict such rheological behavior with a set of parameters. The reduced strain closure (RSC) model in spite of its ability to successfully reproduce the slow kinetics of orientation growth observed in concentrated short-fiber suspensions is not able to predict both the shear viscosity and the normal stress difference data together, which could be possibly due to the fact that an orientation model with a scalar interaction coefficient cannot predict...

    Abstract
In this paper, compressive strength of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) confined concrete cylinders is formulated using a hybrid method coupling genetic programming (GP) and simulated annealing (SA), called GP/SA, and a robust variant of GP, namely multi expression programming (MEP). Straightforward GP/SA and MEP-based prediction equations are derived for the compressive strength of CFRP-wrapped concrete cylinders. The models are constructed using two sets of predictor variables. The first set comprises diameter of concrete cylinder, unconfined concrete strength, tensile strength of CFRP laminate, and total thickness of CFRP layer. The most widely used parameters of unconfined concrete...

Strengthening study on 6082 Al alloy after combination of aging treatment and ECAP process

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 527, Issue 18-19 , July , 2010 , Pages 4758-4766 ; 09215093 (ISSN) Dadbakhsh, S ; Karimi Taheri, A ; Smith, C. W ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) was used before and after various aging treatments in order to strengthen a commercial 6082 Al alloy. Experiments were carried out to study the strengthening of the alloy due to pre and post-ECAP aging treatment. It was found that aging before and after ECAP processing is an effective method for strengthening of the alloy. An increase in both strength and ductility of the ECAPed specimen was achieved via appropriate post-aging treatment. This was in such a manner that for maximal strengthening, post-ECAP aging is best conducted at temperatures lower than those usually used for aging if prior work hardening is not undertaken. Pre-ECAP aging was also...

Theoretical and experimental analysis of the thermal, fade and wear characteristics of rubber-based composite friction materials

    , Article Wear ; Volume 269, Issue 1-2 , May , 2010 , Pages 145-151 ; 00431648 (ISSN) Saffar, A ; Shojaei, A ; Arjmand, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
An attempt was made to examine thermal effects as well as fade and wear characteristics of rubber-based friction materials (RBFMs). A series of RBFMs with and without fiber reinforcements were prepared. The fiber reinforcements used were carbon fiber, cellulose fiber and aramid pulp. A semi-empirical model describing the correlation of coefficient of friction (COF) and temperature was presented. The effectiveness of the model was evaluated using the experimental data. The results revealed that the model parameters for a given composite show a significant change above a critical sliding velocity, i.e. 300 rpm. This behavior was speculated to be due to the transition of rubbery state of the...

    Abstract
Interface shear strength between soil and structural materials is dependent on the confining pressure. To increase the confining pressure, different methods of reinforcement and materials, such as carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) can be used. The shear strength of CFRP-improved soil is dependent on the interface properties of the soil and CFRP. The objective of this study is to investigate the interface properties (friction angle and adhesion) of sand and FRP experimentally using the direct shear test apparatus. To increase the surface roughness to improve the interface properties, a layer of sand was placed on saturated carbon fiber during the curing period [spark plasma sintering...

    Abstract
Soils are usually weak in tension therefore different materials such as geosynthetics are used to address this inadequacy. Worldwide annual consumption of geosynthetics is close to 1000 million m2, and the value of these materials is probably close to US$1500 million. Since the total cost of the construction is at least four or five times the cost of the geosynthetic itself, the impact of these materials on civil engineering construction is very large indeed. Nevertheless, there are several significant problems associated with geosynthetics, such as creep, low modulus of elasticity, and susceptibility to aggressive environment. Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) was introduced over two...

    , Article Plastics, Rubber and Composites ; Volume 46, Issue 9 , 2017 , Pages 413-420 ; 14658011 (ISSN) Kosari, M ; Mousavian, S. M. A ; Razavi, S. M ; Ahmadi, S. J ; Izadipanah, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Polyurethane (PU) nanocomposites with 0, 1, 3, 5, and 7 wt-% nanoclay contents were prepared. X-ray diffraction patterns, transmission electron microscopy images, tensile test, and thermogravimetric analysis were utilised to reveal the morphological, mechanical, and thermal-resistant properties of the prepared nanocomposites. The exfoliated structure was obtained for nanoclay contents up to 3 wt-%. Incorporation of nanoclay to the PU matrix prompted the thermal stability of the polymer. A nanocomposite filled with 3 wt-% nanoclay showed the best tensile strength in the prepared nanocomposites. Subsequently, the nanocomposite with the 3 wt-% nanoclay was reinforced with carbon and glass...

    , Article Journal of Reinforced Plastics and Composites ; Volume 36, Issue 18 , 2017 , Pages 1355-1368 ; 07316844 (ISSN) Toufigh, V ; Yarigarravesh, M ; Mofid, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This study examined the bond at the interface of masonry bricks and fiber-reinforced polymer when exposed to five environments. Three fabrics (aramid, carbon, and glass) and one type of epoxy resin were used. A total of 375 brick-fiber-reinforced polymer specimens were made using wet lay-up technic and exposed to chemical solutions at four pH values (2.5, 7, 10, and 12.5) and substitute seawater. The effect of dry heat on the bond at the interface was also investigated. Single-lap shear tests were then carried out on the samples after 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 13 weeks of exposure. The experimental results indicated that freshwater and seawater had a considerable effect on the bond strength of...

A new refill friction spot welding process for aluminum/polymer composite hybrid structures

    , Article Composite Structures ; Volume 174 , 2017 , Pages 59-69 ; 02638223 (ISSN) Karami Pabandi, H ; Movahedi, M ; Kokabi, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A new refill friction spot welding process called Threaded Hole Friction Spot Welding (THFSW) was introduced to join AA5052 aluminum to short-carbon-fiber-reinforced polypropylene (PP-SCF) composite sheets. The process was based on filling of the pre-threaded hole by melted and re-solidified polymer. The results showed that THFSW was successful to join aluminum to polymer sheets and the hole was completely filled with melted polymer. Formation of a reaction layer composed mostly of Al, C and O as well as interlocking between the threaded hole and the re-solidified polymer were recognized as main bonding mechanisms. Maximum shear-tensile strength of the joints reached to ∼80 percent of the...

    , Article Construction and Building Materials ; Volume 134 , 2017 , Pages 507-519 ; 09500618 (ISSN) Ashrafi, H ; Bazli, M ; Vatani Oskouei, A. V ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The bond of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcement is expected to be more sensitive to the strength and geometry of the ribs than conventional steel reinforcement. In this study, the effect of carbon fiber mat anchorage on the pullout behavior of glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars embedded in normal concrete is studied. The studied parameters were the compressive strength of the concrete (16 MPa, 24 MPa, and 37 MPa), and, the length and diameter of the anchorage. In total, 15 variables were studied. Ribbed GFRP bars with 10 mm nominal diameter and 80 mm embedment length, ld, (which is 8 times the bar diameter) were considered. Based on the results for concretes with the...

Strengthening of metallic beams with different types of pre-stressed un-bonded retrofit systems

    , Article Composite Structures ; Volume 159 , 2017 , Pages 81-95 ; 02638223 (ISSN) Kianmofrad, F ; Ghafoori, E ; Elyasi, M. M ; Motavalli, M ; Rahimian, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2017
    Abstract
Unlike bonded retrofit systems, un-bonded systems do not need any surface preparation prior to bond application, which reduces the overall time and cost of a retrofit plan. Because the carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) plate in the un-bonded (tendon) systems is not bonded to a metallic substrate, different variants of the retrofit systems can be developed to ease application in the field. This paper presents four different variants of the prestressed un-bonded retrofit (PUR) systems: trapezoidal PUR (TPUR), triangular PUR (TriPUR), Flat PUR (FPUR), and Contact PUR (CPUR) systems. Analytical solutions based on the flexibility approach are developed to predict the behavior of the metallic...

    Abstract
Miniaturization of electronic devices with portable, flexible and wearable characteristics created a great demand for high-performance microscale energy storage devices with lightweight and flexible properties. Among the energy storage devices, wire-shaped supercapacitors (WSSCs) have recently received tremendous attention due to their tiny volume, wearability, high flexibility and potential applications in the next-generation portable/wearable electronic devices. Herein, we successfully fabricated a porous dendritic Ni-Cu film on Cu wire substrate (CWE) for fabrication of high-performance wire-type supercapacitors. The porous structure with dendritic morphology provides a high surface area,...
