    Abstract
A five-coordinated Fe(III) complex with the distorted trigonal bipyramidal configuration was synthesized by reactions of FeCl36H2O and 2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl)oxazoline (Hphox) as a bidentate ON donor oxazoline ligand. Complex [Fe(phox)2Cl] was fully characterized, including by single-crystal X-ray structure analysis. DFT calculations were accompanied with experimental results in order to obtain a deeper insight into the electronic structure and vibrational normal modes of complex. Oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides in one-step was conducted by this complex as catalyst using urea hydrogen peroxide (UHP) in mixture of CH2Cl 2/CH3OH (1:1) under air at room temperature. The results show that using...

    , Article Journal of Chemical and Engineering Data ; Vol. 59, issue. 11 , 2014 , pp. 3624-3634 ; ISSN: 00219568 Lashkarbolooki, M ; Ayatollahi, S ; Riazi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The use of adjusted/optimized saline water categorized into two different classes namely smart water (SW) and low salinity (LoSal) water injection has been proposed for more oil recovery from specific types of oil reservoirs. There are possible mechanisms concerning SW flooding that have been proposed in the literature, some of them are still subject to more examination. In this study, an experimental investigation is performed to determine the influence of type and amount of salt to the surface properties including interfacial tension (IFT) and contact angle (CA) of aqueous solution + acidic and asphaltenic crude oil + carbonate rock systems. For this purpose, the concentration of different...

    , Article Surface and Coatings Technology ; Vol. 238 , 2014 , pp. 158-164 ; ISSN: 02578972 Surani Yancheshmeh, H ; Ghorbani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The effect of pulse reverse current (PRC) method on Ni-Mo coatings electroplated from chloride solution was investigated by various plating parameters such as plating duration, the anodic duty cycle, the anodic current density and the cathodic current density. By increasing the anodic duty cycle and anodic current density, the Mo content of coatings reached 68wt.% and 78wt.%, respectively at cathodic current densities of 500 and 300mAcm-2. The Mo content of coatings increases by the preferential dissolution of Ni on the anodic pulse and also by the replenishment of Mo complexes in the diffusion layer near the substrate surface during the anodic pulse. In comparison with the direct current...

Facile synthesis of monodisperse thermally immiscible Ag-Ni alloy nanoparticles at room temperature

    , Article Bulletin of Materials Science ; Vol. 37, issue. 6 , 2014 , pp. 1447-1452 Tabatabaei, S ; Sadrnezhaad, S. K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Ag and Ni are immiscible, mainly due to their large lattice mismatch. This paper reports on their nanoscale formation of solid solution at room temperature by simple reduction reactions which lead to the amorphous Ag-Ni alloy nanoparticles (ANPs) with mono-disperse distribution. Microscopic and spectroscopic studies confirmed dependence of the alloy composition on size of nanoparticles. In the presence of different ligands such as sodium citrate, polyvinyl alcohol and potassium carbonate a mixture of silver oxide and Ag-Ni ANPs was achieved. Stoichiometry of the Ag-Ni ANPs was also found to be strongly dependent on ligands of the reduction reaction and further study shows without any ligand...

    , Article Physica E: Low-Dimensional Systems and Nanostructures ; Volume 44, Issue 3 , December , 2011 , Pages 618-627 ; 13869477 (ISSN) Mohammad Beigi, H ; Yaghmaei, S ; Roostaazad, R ; Bardania, H ; Arpanaei, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized by coprecipitation of iron chloride salts at various pH values (9, 10, 11 and12) that were adjusted using an ammonia solution. Increasing the pH from 9 to 12 led to decreases in the size of iron oxide nanoparticles from 7.9±1.4 to 5±0.6 nm and the saturation magnetization (M s) from 82.73 to 67.14 emu/g, respectively, when analyzed with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). X-ray diffraction patterns as well as M s values showed that magnetite is the dominantly synthesized phase in the examined pH values. Unmodified iron oxide nanoparticles were coated with silica via the hydrolysis and...

    , Article Fullerenes Nanotubes and Carbon Nanostructures ; Volume 19, Issue 4 , 2011 , Pages 317-328 ; 1536383X (ISSN) Gheytani, S ; Shervin, S. H ; Simchi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were synthesized in aqueous solutions containing FeCl2, FeCl3, FeSO4 and Fe2(SO4) 3. The effects of iron charge and the counter ions on the formation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were investigated. Thermogravimetric (TG) analysis indicated that carbon multilayer structures including CNTs and multishell graphite particles were formed in deionized (DI) water without the iron precursor. SWCNTs were also synthesized in the presence of the iron ions. It was also found that the mole ratio of [Fe2+]/[Fe3+] in the solution has a significant influence on the purity of CNTs and the process yield. The highest yield was...

Petroleum monoaromatics including benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) are among the notorious volatile organic compounds that contaminate water and soil. In this study, a surfactant- modified natural zeolite and its relevant granulated nanozeolites were evaluated as potential adsorbents for removal of petroleum monoaromatics from aqueous solutions. All experiments performed in batch mode at constant temperature of 20°C and pH of 6.8 for 48 h. The results revealed that the amount of BTEX uptake on granulated zeolites nanoparticles were remarkably higher than the parent micron size natural zeolite (in the order of four times). The isotherms data were analyzed using five models...

Combined model of mass-transfer coefficients for clean and contaminated liquid-liquid systems

    , Article Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research ; Volume 50, Issue 8 , 2011 , Pages 4608-4617 ; 08885885 (ISSN) Haghdoost, A ; Dehkordi, A. M ; Darbandi, M ; Shahalami, M ; Saien, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Mass-transfer rates to and from drops in liquid-liquid extraction processes are often reduced by the presence of contaminants. To design an industrial extractor, it is essential to consider this contamination effect in a quantitative manner. To achieve this goal, an experimental investigation was conducted on the mass transfer into single drops for n-butanol-succinic acid-water, as the recommended test system by the European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE). The effects of anionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS), cationic (dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, DTMAC), and nonionic (octylphenol decaethylene glycol ether, Triton X-100) surfactants on the hydrodynamic and mass-transfer...

    , Article Brazilian Journal of Chemical Engineering ; Volume 28, Issue 1 , Mar , 2011 , Pages 73-79 ; 01046632 (ISSN) Golestani, H. A ; Mousavi, M ; Borghei, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
High water consumption and water scarcity make industrial wastewater reuse necessary, especially in those industries characterized by polluted effluents such as welding electrode manufacturing industries. The present paper investigates the coupling of coagulation-flocculation with nanofiltration (NF) to recycle water and reuse it in the process. First, the effect of different concentrations of a mixture of alum (Al2(SO4) 3.18H2O) and ferric chloride (FeCl3) on the pretreatment process was closely studied. Then the NF process was applied for complementary treatment. The NF results show that, by increasing both flow rate and transmembrane pressure (TMP), permeate flux is increased. The NF...

    , Article International Journal of Hydrogen Energy ; Volume 35, Issue 2 , 2010 , Pages 854-860 ; 03603199 (ISSN) Fardindoost, S ; Iraji zad, A ; Rahimi, F ; Ghasempour, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The sol gel method was employed to prepare peroxopolytungstic acid (P-PTA). Palladium chloride salt was dissolved in the sol with different Pd:W molar ratios and coated on Al2O3 substrates by spin coating method. XRD and XPS techniques were used to analyze the crystal structure and chemical composition of the films before and after heat treatment at 500 °C. We observed that Pd can modify the growth kinetic of tungsten trioxide nanoparticles by reducing the crystallite size and as a result can improve hydrogen sensitivity. Resistance-sensing measurements indicated sensitivity of about 2.5 × 104 at room temperature in hydrogen concentration of 0.1% in air. Considering all sensing parameters,...

    Abstract
Two non-ionic and hydrophilic surfactant additives, Tetronic-1107 and Triton X-100, were added to poly(vinyl chloride)/NMP polymeric solution to prepare ultrafiltration membranes via immersion precipitation. Surfactants at three different weight percentages up to 6 wt% were added, and the fabricated membranes were characterized and their performance for water treatment in the presence of bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a foulant was assessed. The scanning electron microscopy images indicated remarkable changes in morphology due to higher thermodynamic instability after surfactant addition. The membranes are more porous with more macro-voids in the sub-layer. Plus, the membranes become more...

The effect of brine salinity on water-in-oil emulsion stability through droplet size distribution analysis: A case study

    , Article Journal of Dispersion Science and Technology ; 2017 , Pages 1-13 ; 01932691 (ISSN) Maaref, S ; Ayatollahi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Water-in-oil emulsion usually forms during waterflooding in some heavy oil reservoirs. The composition and salinity of the injected water critically affect the w/o emulsion droplet size distribution, which control the emulsion stability and emulsion flow in porous media. The aim of the present work is to assess the effect of different sea water salinities on w/o emulsion stability through microscopic imaging. Therefore, w/o emulsions were prepared with different sea water samples, which were synthesized to resemble Persian Gulf, Mediterranean, Red Sea, and North Sea water samples. The results showed that log-normal distribution function predicts very well the experimental data to track the...

    , Article Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics ; Volume 50, Issue 48 , 2017 ; 00223727 (ISSN) Cheshme Khavar, A. H ; Mahjoub, A. R ; Taghavinia, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Superstrate configuration CuInS2 (CIS) solar cells are fabricated using a spray pyrolysis method. We avoided selenization process, cyanide etching and CdS buffer layer, to keep the process 'green'. CIS layers are formed by spray pyrolysis of an aqueous precursor ink containing metal chloride salts and thiourea at 350 °C. We investigated the effect of intentional Zn doping on structural, morphological and photovoltaic response of the fabricated CIS films by dissolving ZnCl2 in aqueous precursor solution. At a zinc doping level ranging between 0.25 and 1.00 mol%, Zn doping is found to improve the CIS crystal growth and surface morphology of CIS films. Compared with the performance of the...

Investigating the effect of hybrid silica nanoparticles-copolymer on increasing oil recovery in a three dimensional porous media

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 24, Issue 6 , 2017 , Pages 3466-3475 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Golshokooh, S ; Ramazani, A. S. A ; Hekmatzadeh, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this work, hybrid of silica nanoparticles (NPs) with sulfonated copolymer has been prepared in order to improve the copolymer properties for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR). Some tests are done to find the effectiveness of injecting fluid on Recovery Factor (RF), such as Contact Angle (CA), interfacial tension (IFT), inherent viscosity, and eventually Micro-Model (MM) flooding. In CA test, wettability alteration from Oil-Wet (OW) to Water-Wet (WW) is reached by sedimentation and adsorption of NPs on the rock slice. In addition, IFT reduction is obtained by increasing the NaCl concentration. The viscosity change is investigated for the hybrid and copolymer under simulated high-temperature oil...
