Power system dynamic state estimation with synchronized phasor measurements

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement ; Vol. 63, issue. 2 , 2014 , p. 352-363 ; ISSN: 189456 Aminifar, F ; Shahidehpour, M ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Kamalinia, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The dynamic state estimation (DSE) applied to power systems with synchrophasor measurements would estimate the system's true state based on measurements and predictions. In this application, as phasor measurement units (PMUs) are not deployed at all power system buses, state predictions would enhance the redundancy of DSE input data. The significance of predicted and measured data in DSE is affected by their confidence levels, which are inversely proportional to the corresponding variances. In practice, power system states may undergo drastic changes during hourly load fluctuations, component outages, or network switchings. In such conditions, the inclusion of predicted values could degrade...

Reliability-constrained unit commitment using stochastic mixed-integer programming

    , Article 2010 IEEE 11th International Conference on Probabilistic Methods Applied to Power Systems, PMAPS 2010 ; 2010 , p. 200-205 ; ISBN: 9781420000000 Parvania, M ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Aminifar, F ; Abiri-Jahromi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper proposes a stochastic mixed-integer programming (SMIP) model for the reliability-constrained unit commitment (RCUC) problem. The major objective of the paper is to examine both features of accuracy and efficiency of the proposed SMIP model of RCUC. The spinning reserve of generating units is considered as the only available reserve provision resource; however, the proposed formulation can be readily extended to comprise the other kind of reserve facilities. Expected load not served (ELNS) and loss of load probability (LOLP) are accommodated as the reliability constraints. Binding either or both reliability indices ensures the security of operation incorporating the stochastic...

Optimal reserve capacity allocation with consideration of customer reliability requirements

    , Article Energy ; Vol. 35, issue. 9 , 2010 , p. 3883-3890 ; ISSN: 03605442 Najafi, M ; Ehsan, M ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Akhavein, A ; Afshar, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
An algorithm for determining optimal reserve capacity in a power market is presented in this paper. Optimization process in the proposed algorithm is based on the cost-benefit trade off. Market clearance is executed with consideration of uncertainties of power system components in an aggregated environment. It is assumed that both generating units and interruptible loads participate in the reserve market. In addition, customers' reliability requirements are considered as constraints for decision making process of ISO. The rendered method considers random outages of generating units and transmission lines and determined outage of interruptible loads and employs Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS)...

The 2D digraph-based NoCs: Attractive alternatives to the 2D mesh NoCs

    , Article Journal of Supercomputing ; Vol. 59, issue. 1 , January , 2012 , pp. 1-21 ; ISSN: 9208542 Sabbaghi-Nadooshan, R ; Modarressi, M ; Sarbazi-Azad, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper proposes two-dimensional directed graphs (or digraphs for short) as a promising alternative to the popular 2D mesh topology for networks-onchip (NoCs). Mesh is the most popular topology for the NoCs, mainly due to its suitability for on-chip implementation and low cost. However, the fact that a digraph offers a lower diameter than its equivalent linear array of equal cost motivated us to evaluate digraphs as the underlying topology of NoCs. This paper introduces a family of NoC topologies based on three well-known digraphs, namely de Bruijn, shuffleexchange, and Kautz. We study topological properties of the proposed topologies. We show that the proposed digraph-based topologies...

Modeling the effects of hot-spot traffic load on the performance of wormhole-switched hypermeshes

    , Article Computers and Electrical Engineering ; Vol. 37, issue. 1 , 2011 , p. 1-23 ; ISSN: 00457906 Moraveji, R ; Sarbazi-Azad, H ; Nayebi, A ; Navi, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Hypermesh is a promising network topology and is suitable for a range of network-based computing systems. Although there are few models reported for hypermeshes with uniform traffic pattern, no analytical model has been reported to deal with hot-spot traffic. Since many parallel applications exhibit non-uniform traffic patterns such as hot-spots, uniform traffic assumption is not always justifiable in practice. In this study, we propose a new analytical model to predict the mean message latency in wormhole-switched hypermeshes in the presence of hot-spot traffic. The proposed model can also calculate the mean latency under uniform traffic load when the hot-spot ratio is set to zero....

Performance modeling of Cartesian product networks

    , Article Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing ; Vol. 71, issue. 1 , 2011 , p. 105-113 ; ISSN: 07437315 Moraveji, R ; Sarbazi-Azad, H ; Zomaya, A.Y ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper presents a comprehensive performance model for fully adaptive routing in wormhole-switched Cartesian product networks. Besides the generality of the model which makes it suitable to be used for any product graph, experimental (simulation) results show that the proposed model exhibits high accuracy even in heavy traffic and saturation region, where other models have severe problems to predict the performance of the network. Most popular interconnection network can be defined as a Cartesian product of two or more networks including the mesh, hypercube, and torus networks. Torus and mesh networks are the most popular topologies used in recent supercomputing parallel machines. They...

Performance modeling of n-dimensional mesh networks

    , Article Performance Evaluation ; Vol. 67, issue. 12 , 2010 , p. 1304-1323 ; ISSN: 01665316 Rajabzadeh, P ; Sarbazi-Azad, H ; Zarandi, H.-R ; Khodaie, E ; Hashemi-Najafabadi, H ; Ould-Khaoua, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Mesh-based interconnection networks are the most popular inter-processor communication infrastructures used in current parallel supercomputers. Although many analytical models of n-D torus interconnection networks have been reported in the literature over the last decade, few analytical models have been proposed for the 2-D mesh case (and not for the general n-D mesh network) using inaccurate approximations as they have not fully incorporated the asymmetry effects of the mesh topology, in order to reduce the model complexity. There has not been reported, to the best of our knowledge, a performance model that can deal with the n-D mesh network. To fill this gap, in this paper, we propose the...

Power-performance analysis of networks-on-chip with arbitrary buffer allocation schemes

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Computer-Aided Design of Integrated Circuits and Systems ; Vol. 29, issue. 10 , 2010 , p. 1558-1571 ; ISSN: 02780070 Arjomand, M ; Sarbazi-Azad, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
End-to-end delay, throughput, energy consumption, and silicon area are the most important design metrics of networks-on-chip (NoCs). Although several analytical models have been previously proposed for predicting such metrics in NoCs, very few of them consider the effect of message waiting time in the buffers of network routers for predicting overall power consumptions and none of them consider structural heterogeneity of network routers. This paper introduces two inter-related analytical models to compute message latency and power consumption of NoCs with arbitrary topology, buffering structure, and routing algorithm. Buffer allocation scheme defines the buffering space for each individual...

    The 2D SEM: A novel high-performance and low-power mesh-based topology for networks-on-chip

    , Article International Journal of Parallel, Emergent and Distributed Systems ; Vol. 25, issue. 4 , 2010 , p. 331-344 ; ISSN: 17445760 Sabbaghi-Nadooshan, R ; Modarressi, M ; Sarbazi-Azad, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, a 2D shuffle-exchange based mesh topology, or 2D shuffle-exchange mesh (SEM) for short, is presented for network-on-chips. The proposed 2D topology applies the conventional well-known shuffle-exchange structure in each row and each column of the network. Compared to an equal sized mesh which is the most common topology in on-chip networks, the proposed shuffle-exchange based mesh network has smaller diameter but for an equal cost. Finally for better performance cross-shuffle is proposed. Simulation results show that the 2D SEM and 2D cross-shuffle effectively reduce the power consumption and improve performance metrics of the on-chip networks compared to the conventional mesh...

Performance analysis of opportunistic broadcast for delay-tolerant wireless sensor networks

    , Article Journal of Systems and Software ; Vol. 83, issue. 8 , 2010 , p. 1310-1317 ; ISSN: 1641212 Nayebi, A ; Sarbazi-Azad, H ; Karlsson, G ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper investigates a class of mobile wireless sensor networks that are unconnected most of the times; we refer to them as delay-tolerant wireless sensor networks (DTWSN). These networks inherit their characteristics from both delay tolerant networks (DTN) and traditional wireless sensor networks. After introducing DTWSNs, three main problems in the design space of these networks are discussed: routing, data gathering, and neighbor discovery. A general protocol is proposed for DTWSNs based on opportunistic broadcasting in delay-tolerant networks with radio device on-off periods. Three performance measures are defined in the study: the energy for sending queries to ask for data from...

Motion of deformable ring made of IPMC

    , Article Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering ; Vol. 8409 , 2012 ; ISSN: 0277786X ; ISBN: 9780819490872 Firouzeh, A ; Alasty, A ; Ozmaeian, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper application of Ionic Polymer Metal Composite (IPMC) as actuator in a deformable ring capable of locomotion is studied. Such a deformable ring moves as a result of gravitational force acting on its body when its shape changes. It can be used in exploration, search and rescue missions in future, where using conventional robots with rigid bodies and actuators is impossible. Large deformation induced by small stimulating voltage, low stiffness the sensing characteristics that in future work can be used in feedback control make IPMC a good choice for such an application. In this work first a model for IPMC is introduce that can be used in simulating deformation of IPMC in different...

Designing gear-shift pattern for an electric vehicle to optimize energy consumption

    , Article ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, Proceedings (IMECE) ; Vol. 11 , 2010 , pp. 837-846 ; ISBN: 9780791844489 Rahimi, M. A ; Salehi, R ; Alasty, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper optimization of energy consumption in an electric vehicle is presented. The main idea of this optimization is based on selecting the best gear level in driving the vehicle. Two algorithms for optimization are introduced which are based on fuzzy rules and fuzzy controllers. In first algorithm, fuzzy controller simulates energy consumption in different gear levels, and chooses the optimum gear level. While in second method, fuzzy controller detects the optimum gear level by measuring the vehicle's average speed and acceleration. To investigate the performance of these controllers, a model of TOSAN vehicle is developed and the controllers outputs are checked in simulation of TOSAN...

Using sliding mode control to adjust drum level of a boiler unit with time varying parameters

    , Article ASME 2010 10th Biennial Conference on Engineering Systems Design and Analysis ; Vol. 5 , 2010 , pp. 29-33 ; ISBN: 9780791849194 Moradi, H ; Bakhtiari-Nejad, F ; Saffar-Avval, M ; Alasty, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Stable control of water level of drum is of great importance for economic operation of power plant steam generator systems. In this paper, a linear model of the boiler unit with time varying parameters is used for simulation. Two transfer functions between drum water level (output variable) and feed-water and steam mass rates (input variables) are considered. Variation of model parameters may be arisen from disturbances affecting water level of drum, model uncertainties and parameter mismatch due to the variant operating conditions. To achieve a perfect tracking of the desired drum water level, two sliding mode controllers are designed separately. Results show that the designed controllers...

Stabilizing periodic orbits of chaotic systems using adaptive critic-based neurofuzzy controller

    , Article Proceedings of the ASME International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference 2009, DETC2009 ; Vol. 4, Issue. PART C , 2009 , pp. 1759-1767 ; ISBN: 9780791849019 Honarvar, M ; Vatankhah, R ; Salarieh, H ; Boroushaki, M ; Alasty, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper design and evaluation of an adaptive critic- based neurofuzzy controller for the stabilizing periodic orbits of chaotic systems has been presented in detail. The main superiority of the proposed controller over previous analogous fuzzy logic controller design approaches, e.g., genetic fuzzy logic controller, is its online tuning characteristic and remarkable reduced amount of computations used for parameter adaptation, which makes it desirable for real time applications. Considering the simplicity of this controller and its independence from the system model, this control method has the advantage of online learning and control, and can be applied to a large variety of systems....

Non-equilibrium model of gravity drainage in a single block

    , Article Journal of Porous Media ; Vol. 16, issue. 6 , 2013 , p. 559-571 ; ISSN: 1091028X Jahanbakhshi, S ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Masihi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This work concerns with developing a non-equilibrium model of gravity drainage in a single block. The proposed model which considers both non-equilibrium effects of capillary pressure and relative permeabilities is used for prediction of oil recovery by gravity drainage from a single block. Close agreement observed between the model results and experimental data disclosed that the non-equilibrium assumption is completely reliable for modeling of gravity drainage. The results revealed that when the characteristic time of the saturation variation is comparable with the time required to establish capillary equilibrium, the non-equilibrium effects in gravity drainage must be considered. The...

Study on non-equilibrium effects during spontaneous imbibition

    , Article Energy and Fuels ; Vol. 25, issue. 7 , June , 2011 , p. 3053-3059 ; ISSN: 08870624 Mirzaei-Paiaman, A ; Masihi, M ; Standnes, D. C ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Spontaneous imbibition of water into the matrix blocks because of capillary forces is an important recovery mechanism for oil recovery from naturally fractured reservoirs. In modeling this process, it has been assumed classically that local equilibrium is reached and, therefore, capillary pressure and relative permeability functions are only a function of water saturation, resulting in the appearance of the self-similarity condition. In some works published in the last 2 decades, it has, however, been claimed that local equilibrium is not reached in porous media, and therefore, opposite the classical local-equilibrium/self-similar approach, non-equilibrium effects should be taken into...

The semi-analytical modeling and simulation of the VAPEX process of ""Kuh-e-Mond"" heavy oil reservoir

    , Article Petroleum Science and Technology ; Vol. 29, issue. 5 , Oct , 2009 , p. 535-548 ; ISSN: 10916466 Rasti, F ; Masihi, M ; Kharrat, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The vapor extraction process (or VAPEX) uses vaporized solvents injected into a horizontal well to form a vapor chamber within the reservoir. Vapor dissolves in the oil and enhances the oil production by decreasing the oil viscosity in heavy oil reservoirs. To evaluate the process we conduct a simulation study on an Iranian heavy oil reservoir called Kuh-e-Mond. In addition, a semi-analytical investigation of the VAPEX process has been performed. The idea is to perform VAPEX simulation for a laboratory model and find a methodology to compare the results of the simulator with the semi-analytical Butler's model. In particular, a semi-analytical dimensionless correlation for production rate...

Recovery improvement using water and gas injection scenarios

    , Article Petroleum Science and Technology ; Vol. 29, issue. 3 , Sep , 2009 , p. 290-300 ; ISSN: 10916466 Tafty, M. F ; Masihi, M ; Momeni, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Water and miscible gas injection scenarios are considered in an Iranian oil reservoir for the purpose of recovery improvement. Firstly reservoir fluid modeling and modeling of a slim tube test were performed. Then, water alternating gas (WAG) injection was evaluated by optimizing the WAG half cycle and WAG ratio. Alternatively, hybrid WAG and separate injection of water and gas in the top and bottom of the reservoir were also investigated. The numerical simulation results showed that the optimum WAG, with half cycle of 1.5 years and WAG ratio of one, gave the highest recovery factor. Moreover, economic evaluation of these scenarios indicated that WAG had the highest net present value and was...

    , Article 73rd European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers Conference and Exhibition 2011: Unconventional Resources and the Role of Technology. Incorporating SPE EUROPEC 2011 ; Vol. 4, issue , 2011 , p. 2461-2466 Saidian, M ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Masihi, M ; Kharrat, R ; Kianinejad, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this study a new iterative algorithm is developed to evaluate dispersivity in fracture and matrix, distinctly. The novelty of proposed algorithm is using mathematical model of solute transport in fractured porous media coupled with experimental data iteratively. A fractured glass micromodel has been designed to visualize the interaction between fracture and matrix during displacement of n-Decane by n-Octane at constant rate. The similarity between numerical and experimental model has been enhanced by reducing the assumptions which were applied in previous related studies. The iteration is performed on velocity components of solute transport and longitudinal as well as transversal...

New technique for calculation of well deliverability in gas condensate reservoir

    , Article Deep Gas Conference and Exhibition 2010, DGAS 2010 ; January , 2010 , p. 51-59 ; SPE Deep Gas Conference and Exhibition, 24-26 January, Manama, Bahrain Publication Date 2010 Gerami, S ; Sadeghi, A ; Masihi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Well deliverability is an important issue in forecasting the performance of many gas condensate reservoirs. Condensate accumulation near the wellbore can cause a significant reduction in productivity, even in reservoirs where the fluid is very lean. Generally, the well deliverability is affected by two pressure-drop sources due to depletion and condensate buildup. Recently Rapid spreadsheet tools have developed to evaluate the well performance using material balance equation for depletion and two-phase pseudo pressure integral for well inflow performance. Most of them account for the effects of negative inertia and positive coupling in the calculation of gas relative permeability. This paper...
