    2013
    Abstract
This article reports the first oil-absorbent cross-linked copolymer consisting of modified multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) and showing high oil absorbency. Also, to investigate and evaluate the effective parameters on oil absorbency, cross-linked dodecyl methacrylate (DDMA)-diphenylacrylamide (DPAA) and DDMA-butyl acrylate (BA) copolymers were synthesized. DDMA was copolymerized with different mol% of DPAA or BA and cross-linked using azobisisobutyronitrile as the initiator and various weight percentages of 1,4-butandiol dimethacrylate, methylene bisacrylamide, or vinyl group-modified MWCNT cross-linkers. The effects of monomer feed composition, cross-linker concentration, and the...

    Abstract
Salep phosphate modified biopolymers with different phosphate contents were prepared via reacting salep (a multi-component polysaccharide obtained from dried tubers of certain natural terrestrial orchids) with a solution of primary and secondary sodium phosphates under basic conditions in a semidry process. Structural characterization of salep phosphates were carried out by 31P NMR, FT-IR spectra and TGA curves. Determination of the phosphate content in samples was done by a standard spectrophotometric method. Then, novel (salep phosphate)-based hydrogels were synthesized by graft copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA) monomer onto salep phosphate backbones. Effect of the phosphate contents...

Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was carried out to confirm the chemical structure of the hydrogel. Moreover, morphology of the samples was assessed by scanning electron microscopy. The equilibrium swelling capacities of synthesized hydrogels were evaluated...

    , Article Journal of Applied Polymer Science ; Volume 120, Issue 4 , 2011 , Pages 1942-1949 ; 00218995 (ISSN) Nodehi, A ; Hajiebrahimi, M ; Parvazinia, M ; Shahrokhi, M ; Abedini, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Macroporous styrene-divinylbenzene copolymers with different degree of crosslinking were prepared by suspension polymerization in presence of different binary mixtures of toluene and heptane, as diluent. Specific surface area, bulk and apparent densities, and pore volume of the resulting beads were determined experimentally. Applying the least square method to the experimental data, correlations for prediction of these properties were obtained. Effects of divinylbenzene concentration, diluent to comonomer volume ratio, and composition of the diluent mixture were considered in developing the aforementioned correlations. The influence of the reaction recipe on porous structure of the samples...

Nanoparticles were encapsulated simultaneously during the preparation process. AuNPs were simply synthesized and encapsulated by addition a boiling aqueous solution of HAuCl 4 to aqueous solutions of A 1, A 2, A 3 and A 4. In the case of silver, an aqueous solution of AgNO 3 was reduced...

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 32, Issue 4 , 2011 , Pages 1806-1813 ; 02641275 (ISSN) Dadfar, S. M. A ; Alemzadeh, I ; Reza Dadfar, S. M ; Vosoughi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Nanocomposite films based on low density polyethylene (LDPE), containing of 2, 3, and 4. wt.% organoclay (OC) and ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer as a new compatibilizer were prepared and characterized using rheological tests, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, oxygen permeation measurements, and tensile tests. There was no exfoliation or intercalation of the clay layers in the absence of EVA, while an obvious increase in d-spacing was observed when the samples were prepared with EVA present. This issue was reflected in the properties of nanocomposites. The oxygen barrier properties of the LDPE/EVA/OC film were significantly better than those of the LDPE/OC film....

    Abstract
In this work, a novel method to synthesis of an acrylic superabsorbent hydrogel was reported. In the two stage hydrogel synthesis, first copolymerization reaction of acrylonitrile (AN) and acrylamide (AM) monomers using ammonium persulfate (APS) as a free radical initiator was performed. In the second stage, the resulted copolymer was hydrolyzed to produce carboxamide and carboxylate groups followed by in situ crosslinking of the polyacrylonitrile chains. The results from FTIR spectroscopy and the dark red-yellow color change show that the copolymerization, alkaline hydrolysis and crosslinking reactions have been do take place. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) verifies that the synthesized...

    Abstract
Chemical and electron beam irradiation methods were used to introduce a branched structure into polypropylene and propylene-ethylene copolymer. The chemical method was carried out in an internal mixer using initiator and TMPTMA monomer. In irradiation method, the polymer was irradiated by electron beam under air and nitrogen atmosphere. The branched structure in the modified polymer was confirmed by rheological measurements. While degradation was significant in chemical method, branching occurred efficiently by irradiation under air. Small amount of ethylene in the propylene copolymer promoted branching over degradation

Morphology of the samples was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In free-state, the swelling conditions and hence the related data are not real, because in all their applications the swelling particles of superabsorbent must absorb aqueous solutions while...

An Investigation into Effects of Components Ratio and Nano/micro Sized ZnO Particles on Evolution of Transesterification Reaction, Compatiblization and Modification of PET/PC Blends Structure

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghahramanzadeh Asl, Hadi (Author) ; Bagheri, Reza (Supervisor) ; Pircheraghi, Gholamreza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Polycarbonate (PC) and polyethylene-terephthalate (PET) are important engineering thermoplastics. During last decades these polymers and their blends have been studied extensively due to their wide range of applications. Blends of PET and PC combine mechanical properties and chemical resistance together, which make applicable in various components such as automotive, electrical and of medical parts. It has been accepted that PET/PC immiscible blends are subjected to transesterification reactions during thermal processing, which produces PET-PC copolymer chains. In fact, scissioning and substitution of ester/carbonate functional groups of PC and PET at the interface, transforms the initial...

    , Article Nanomedicine: Nanotechnology, Biology, and Medicine ; Volume 6, Issue 4 , Aug , 2010 , Pages 556-562 ; 15499634 (ISSN) Tavakoli Naeini, A ; Adeli, M ; Vossoughi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Linear-dendritic ABA triblock copolymers containing poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as B block and hyperbranched poly(citric acid) (PCA) as A blocks were synthesized through polycondensation. The molecular self-assembly of synthesized PCA-PEG-PCA copolymers in water led to formation of nanoparticles and fibers in different sizes and shapes depending on the time and size of PCA blocks. Ten days after dissolving PCA-PEG-PCA copolymers in water, the size of fibers had reached several millimeters. Mixing a water solution of fluorescein as a small guest molecule and PCA-PEG-PCA copolymers led to the encapsulation of fluorescein by products of molecular self-assembly. To investigate their potential...

The effects of potassium persulfate and poly(ethylene glycol) concentrations, reaction time and reaction temperature on block polymerization were studied by determining the yield of reaction (%Y), polymerization efficiency (%E) and add-on percentage (%Add-on). Keeping the other conditions constant, the optimum reaction conditions were found to be initiator = 0.01 M,...

The membranes exhibited reversible swelling-shrinking behavior; higher swelling ratios were obtained observed at higher temperatures. Drug permeation studies were carried out using vancomycin hydrochloride and betamethasone sodium phosphate as the model...
