Dynamics and stability analysis of rotating cylindrical shells in annular fluid medium

    , Article International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics ; Volume 20, Issue 8 , 2020 Abdollahi, R ; Firouz Abadi, R. D ; Rahmanian, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    World Scientific  2020
    Abstract
Stability and dynamics of rotating coaxial cylindrical shells conveying incompressible and inviscid fluid are investigated. The interior shell is assumed to be flexible while the exterior cylinder is rigid. Using Sander's-Koiter theory assumptions and following Hamilton's principle, governing equations of motion are determined in their integral form. Employing the extended Galerkin method of solution, the integral equations of motion are projected to their equivalent system of algebraic equations. Fluid equations are fundamentally based on the linearized inviscid Navier-Stokes equations. Impermeability condition on the fluid and structure interface as well as the zero radial velocity...

Mathematical modeling of anisotropic hyperelastic cylindrical thick shells by incorporating thickness deformation and compressibility with application to arterial walls

    , Article International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics ; Volume 22, Issue 13 , 2022 ; 02194554 (ISSN) Borjalilou, V ; Asghari, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    World Scientific  2022
    Abstract
This paper is devoted to mathematical modeling of anisotropic hyperelastic thick cylindrical shells like arteries by taking into account the volume compressibility and through-the-thickness deformation. To describe the hyperelastic behavior of this kind of shells and extract their constitutive relations, the modified anisotropic (MA) model is employed, which is able to characterize compressible behavior of hyperelastic materials like soft tissues. By considering the arterial segment as a thick cylindrical shell, the higher order thickness deformation shell theory together with nonlinear Green's strains are exploited to express its deformations and capture the thickness stretching effect. The...

    Abstract
Smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) was applied to simulate the free falling of cylindrical bodies in three types of fluids including Newtonian, generalized-Newtonian and viscoelastic fluids. Renormalized derivation schemes were used because of their consistency in combination with the latest version of no slip boundary condition to improve the handling of moving fluid-structure interactions (FSIs). Verification of the method was performed through comparing the results of some benchmark examples for both single and two phase flows with the literature. The effects of some parameters such as the viscosity of the Newtonian fluid, the n index of the power-law fluid and the relaxation time of...

    Abstract
In this paper the vibration of a spinning cylindrical shell made of functional graded material (FGM) made is investigated. After a brief introduction of FG materials, by employing higher order theory for shell deformation, constitutive relationships are derived. In the next step by utilizing energy method and Hamilton's principle governing deferential equation of spinning cylindrical shell is obtained. By making use of the principle of minimum potential energy, the characteristic equation of natural frequencies is derived. After verification of the results, the effect of changing different parameters such as material grade, L/R, h/R, and spinning velocity on the natural frequency are...

    Abstract
The underground and buried oil and gas pipelines are continuously in contact with earthen soils on the outer surface and compressible fluids on the inner surface. Most these earthen soils can be appropriately represented by a model named Pasternak. Similarly, undersea oil and gas pipelines and tubes of heat exchangers remain in contact with fluids on both sides and also rockets and missiles filled with solid and liquid fuels and shallow shells supported on soft and light filaments in space vehicles, boilers and storage tanks on floor grid work in ships can also be considered as thin circular cylindrical shells on a Pasternak foundation. The basic aim of the presented study is investigation...

    Abstract
The general solution of steady-state asymmetric mechanical and thermal stresses of a hollow thick cylinder made of fluid-saturated functionally graded porous piezoelectric materials based on two-dimensional equations of thermoelasticity is considered. The general form of thermal and mechanical boundary conditions is considered on the inside and outside surfaces. A direct method is used to solve the heat conduction equation and the nonhomogeneous system of partial differential Navier equations, using the complex Fourier series and the power law functions method. The material properties are assumed to depend on the radial and circumferential variables and are expressed as power law functions...

    Abstract
This in-water experimental study deals with the effects of the after-body on the FIV response of round and sharp edge cylinders. Different circular, square, diamond, and right-angle isosceles triangular cross-sections are investigated. The triangular cylinder is examined in four different symmetrical and unsymmetrical configurations with respect to the incident flow. The current towing tank experiments form a basis for the feasibility study of the isosceles triangular cylinders for FIV energy converters. The results indicate that the cylinders with a flat side perpendicular to the flow have a galloping type of response. In contrast, the cylinders with a sharp vertex pointing the flow show a...

    Abstract
Free vibration response of a cylindrical shell closed with two hemispherical caps at the ends (hermit capsule) is analysed in this research. It is assumed that the system of joined shell is made from functionally graded materials (FGM). Properties of the shells are assumed to be graded through the thickness. Abstract
The nonlinear governing equations of three shell theories (Donnell, Love, and Sanders) with first-order approximation and von Kármán’s geometric nonlinearity for laminated sandwich cylindrical shells with isotropic, functionally graded (FG) or isogrid lattice layers are decoupled. This uncoupling makes it possible to present a semi-analytical solution for the nonlinear bending and post-buckling behavior of short and long doubly simply supported, doubly clamped, and cantilever laminated sandwich cylindrical shells subjected to various types of thermo-mechanical loadings. The results for deflection, stress, critical axial traction, and mode shapes in FG shells are verified with those obtained...

    Abstract
In this article, wave propagation characteristics of a size-dependent graphene nanoplatelet (GNP) reinforced composite cylindrical nanoshell coupled with piezoelectric actuator (PIAC) and surrounded with viscoelastic foundation is presented. The effects of small scale are analyzed based on nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT) which is an accurate theory employing exact length scale parameter and nonlocal constant. The governing equations of the GNP composite cylindrical nanoshell coupled with PIAC have been evolved using Hamilton’s principle and solved with assistance of the analytical method. For the first time in the current study, wave propagation electrical behavior of a GNP composite...

    Abstract
An experimental setup has been developed to analyse the impact of cylinder transverse vibration caused by flow-induced vibration, and to improve wind energy harvesting from these vibrations. The setup consists of a cylinder mounted on four springs and is subjected to a uniform and steady flow of wind. In the first part, the effect of mounting a fixed cylinder as an obstacle with different diameters and distances from the downstream vibrating cylinder is investigated. It has been observed that the vibration amplitude on the wake of an unequal-sized obstacle is greatly amplified compared to the case of a single cylinder or an equal-sized cylinder. Numerical simulations has been conducted to...

    Abstract
A nonlinear mathematical model is developed in the time domain to simulate the behaviour of two identical flexibly mounted cylinders in tandem while undergoing vortex-induced vibration (VIV). Subsequently, the model is validated and modified against experimental results. Placing an array of bluff bodies in proximity frequently happens in different engineering fields. Chimney stacks, power transmission lines and oil production risers are few engineering structures that may be impacted by VIV. The coinciding of the vibration frequency with the structure natural frequency could have destructive consequences. The main objective of this study is to provide a symplectic and reliable model capable...

    Abstract
A comprehensive study was performed to analyze the unsteady laminar flow characteristics around a porously covered, a fully porous, and a solid squared section cylinder located in the middle of a plane channel. In order to simulate fluid flow inside porous media and porous–fluid interface accurately (minimizing modeling error), the porous region was analyzed in pore scale, using LBM. Additionally, to minimize the LBM-related compressibility error through the porous region, a multi-block multiple relaxation time lattice Boltzmann method (MRT-LBM) was used. Also, to decrease CPU time, a Navier–Stokes flow solver, based on finite volume method and SIMPLE algorithm, was coupled with MRT-LBM to...

    Abstract
In this paper, the oscillation of two spark-generated bubbles placed on a vertical column in close proximity to a confined free surface is considered. The confined free surface is accorded by the top opening of different configurations. These configurations include (i) a centrally perforated horizontal flat plate (θ = 90∘), (ii) vertically placed cylinder (θ = 0∘) and (iii) nozzle (θ > 0∘). The main objective of the present work is to study the effects of key parameters such as the nozzle geometry, the locations of the energy input (i.e., initial position of the bubbles with respect to each other and relative to the free surface) on the dynamics of the two bubbles and the free surface. It...

    Abstract
The present study aims at the investigation of free vibration analysis of thin cylindrical shells surrounded by an elastic medium, which is distributed over a particular length of the shell. The Love’s shell theory is utilized along with the Winkler foundation to obtain the governing equations of motion. An exact series expansion method of solution is employed for any arbitrary boundary conditions. The excellent accuracy of the obtained results is validated by comparing to the available literature. Moreover, several case studies are performed to provide an insight into the influence of some practically important parameters on free vibrations of circular cylindrical shells, including...

Multi-objective optimal design of stiffened laminated composite cylindrical shell with piezoelectric actuators

    Abstract
The stiffeners and piezoelectric actuators are used in many aerospace structures as an auxiliary layer with laminated composites. A question then arises as to whether we can estimate the percentage of these materials in an efficient design. Due to the high computational cost, it is not easy to answer through numerical solutions. The objective of this paper is concurrently to maximize the buckling load and minimize the weight of the cylindrical shell. To reach this aim, a multi-objective optimization problem is developed based on the closed-form solutions of thermal/mechanical buckling and weight of the piezolaminated shell with eccentric/concentric stiffener. The Non-dominated Sorting...
