, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Davoodpour, Mostafa (Author) ; Banazade, Afshin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this project, process of conceptual design and design optimization is presented for a cloud seeding UAV. Inefficiency of classical and statical design approaches is more obvious in new designed missions restricted to different and numerous Dynamic and performance constraints with no similar design target aircraft. So in this project we used conceptual design optimization approach with respect to aerodynamic, weight and balance, performance and stability discipline to overcome those restrictions and to design a cloud seeding UAV. In order to reduce the computational time, we used low fidelity method (analectic equation) in performance and stability, medium fidelity method (empherical...

A Framework for the Optimal and Robust Tolerance Design of Compressor Blades Under Functional Uncertainties”

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mirhosseini, Darya (Author) ; Khodaygan, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Improving the performance of compressors plays a key role in saving energy in industries. The presence of aleatory and epistemic uncertainties, such as dimensional, geometrical and environmental uncertainties, causes the tolerances that are within the allowed ranges in normal assembly conditions to violate the assembly requirements in operational conditions and cause a drop in compressor efficiency. In order to reach the dimensional and geometrical tolerances of the components of a compressor, especially in the design of the rotor and stator blades, that guarantees the optimal and stable performance while not increasi the production costs, there is a need for an optimal and robust tolerance...

Improving the Decision-Making Process under the Presence of Uncertainty in Airplane Conceptual Design, Creating an Intuitive Platform

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Gholinejhad, Nargess (Author) ; Banazadeh, Afshin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Improving performance and reducing costs is a constant competition between aircraft designers, which has made multi-disciplinary optimization always part of the design process. In the design process of a conventional aircraft, there are various uncertainties in technology levels, mission parameters, costs and operating environment. It is clear that these uncertainties will make the decision-making difficult and lead to uncertainties in the output of the design; on the other hand, considering them will increase the computational cost. Understanding how much the uncertainty of each parameter will affect the overall output of the design and its performance, makes it possible to ignore the...

    Abstract
Nanolaunchers are launch vehicles capable of carring light payloads (under 50 kg) to Low Earth orbit and received much attention in the few past years. Launching the nanosatellites grown about 30 times from 2008 to 2017. Since this category of launch vehicles has fewer developing costs and lower thechnology level, they fit developing space technology in our country. Conversely, the demand of high propellant mass fraction and specific impulse may be a serious difficulty to attain this technology. The only operating nanolauncher in the world is SS-520-5 which belongs to Japan and is a three-stage solid propellant launcher. The goal of this project is also the conceptual design and feasiblity...

, Article AEU - International Journal of Electronics and Communications ; Volume 67, Issue 11, November 2013, Pages 955–966 Majd, A. (Sayyed Arash) ; Salehkalybar, S ; Pakravan, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, we study the impact of sensing error and channel fading on the decision process of a multiple secondary user network in a primary network whose channel occupancy states are modelled as a Bernoulli process. We present a randomized access strategy to maximize total secondary network throughput. The proposed method guarantees that the probability of collision between primary and secondary users in each channel is less than the predefined value of Pc = ξ. To find the optimal access strategy, we formulate secondary network throughput as an optimization problem. Then, using the KKT method to find the solution, we break the original problem into multiple sub-problems. Then, we employ...

Improving the performance of deadlock recovery based routing in irregular mesh NoCs using added mesh-like links

    , Article ISCAS 2010 - 2010 IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems: Nano-Bio Circuit Fabrics and Systems ; 2010 , p. 3236-3239 ; ISBN: 9781424453085 Hosseingholi, M ; Ahmadian, A. S ; Sarbazi-Azad, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Heterogeneity is one of the challenges in the current NoC design which forces designers to consider irregular topologies. Therefore, finding an optimal topology with minimum cost (minimum use of links, buffers, NIs, etc) and power consumption, and maximum flexibility can provide the best cost-performance trade-off. Irregular mesh is a topology which combines the benefits of regularity and advantage of irregularity. Routing algorithms especially those coupled with wormhole switching should deal with deadlock occurrences. Unlike deadlock avoidance-based schemes, deadlock detection and recovery-based routing schemes, do not restrict routing adaptability. In this paper, we modify irregular mesh...

    , Article Desalination and Water Treatment ; Volume 54, Issue 10 , June , 2015 ; ISSN: 19443994 Reyhani, A ; Sepehrinia, K ; Seyed Shahabadi, S. M ; Rekabdar, F ; Gheshlaghi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper describes how to find optimal operating conditions of three controlling parameters, i.e. temperature, transmembrane pressure (TMP), and cross-flow velocity (CFV) for maximizing the permeate flux and total organic carbons (TOC) rejection, and minimizing the fouling resistance using Taguchi method in ultrafiltration (UF) treatment of the real produced water. At first, the optimal operating conditions were found at a temperature of 45°C, TMP = 4 bar, and CFV of 2.25 m/s. To determine the most significant parameters affecting the response parameters, an analysis of variance was employed. In the second stage, performance of applied polymeric membrane in the UF system was studied under...

Multi-objective design optimization of functionally graded material for the femoral component of a total knee replacement

    , Article Materials and Design ; Vol. 53, Issue. 1 , 2014 , pp. 159-173 ; ISSN: 0895-7177 Bahraminasab, M ; Sahari, B. B ; Edwards, K. L ; Farahmand, F ; Hong, T. S ; Arumugam, M ; Jahan, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The optimal design of complex systems in engineering requires pursuing rigorous mathematical modeling of the system's behavior as a function of a set of design variables to achieve goal-oriented design. Despite the success of current knee implants, the limited life span remains the main concern of this complex system. The mismatch between the properties of engineered biomaterials and those of biological materials leads to insufficient bonding with bone, stress shielding effects and wear problems (i.e. aseptic loosening). The use of a functionally graded material (FGM) for the femoral component of knee implants is attractive because the properties can be designed to vary in a certain pattern...

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Vol. 21, Issue. 6 , 2014 , pp. 2243-2249 ; e-ISSN :23453605 Meghdadi, M ; Bakhtiar, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A new approach for the design of two-stage Miller-compensated CMOS op amps is presented. The paper studies the basic relations between power consumption, unitygain bandwidth, the biasing region, technology parameters, and the external capacitive load. As a result, simple and efficient design guides are provided to achieve the minimum possible power consumption for the given specifications and for short-channel devices. It is shown that the conventional design procedures do not always result in minimum power op amps. The presented results are also verified by Spectre simulations

Electromagnetic-thermal design optimization of the brushless doubly fed induction generator

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics ; Vol. 61, issue. 4 , October , 2014 , PP. 1710-1721 ; ISSN: 02780046 Gorginpour, H ; Oraee, H ; McMahon, R. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In view of its special features, the brushless doubly fed induction generator (BDFIG) shows high potentials to be employed as a variable-speed drive or wind generator. However, the machine suffers from low efficiency and power factor and also high level of noise and vibration due to spatial harmonics. These harmonics arise mainly from rotor winding configuration, slotting effects, and saturation. In this paper, analytical equations are derived for spatial harmonics and their effects on leakage flux, additional loss, noise, and vibration. Using the derived equations and an electromagnetic-thermal model, a simple design procedure is presented, while the design variables are selected based on...

Design and optimization of fully digital SQUID based on bi-directional RSFQ

    , Article Journal of Superconductivity and Novel Magnetism ; Vol. 27, issue. 7 , 2014 , p. 1623-1628 Foroughi, F ; Bozbey, A ; Fardmanesh, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Bi-directional RSFQ benefits from using both positive and negative SFQ pulses to manipulate and transfer digital data. This allows more flexibility in the design of simpler circuits with enhanced performance. On the other hand, using the AC bias current, one can replace on-chip resistive current distributors with inductors. This resembles RQL logic, but in contrast to RQL, it is possible to use the well-established standard RSFQ cells in bi-directional RSFQ. These two advantages (energy-efficient computation and flexibility in design) make bi-directional RSFQ a powerful tool in next-generation supercomputers and also compatible with ultra-low-temperature quantum computers. In this work, to...

Optimization procedure to select an inherently safer design scheme

    , Article Process Safety and Environmental Protection ; Vol. 93 , 2014 , pp. 89-98 ; ISSN: 09575820 Eini, S ; Abdolhamidzadeh, B ; Reniers, G ; Rashtchian, D ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
There are different well-established strategies for making a process plant inherently safer. The benefits of applying these strategies on reducing the overall risk inside a plant are obvious. However, some of these changes are rejected many times because they appear to be too costly. But if the effects of applying inherently safer design strategies are investigated not only on the processing costs of a plant but also on the potential accident costs, the decision would in fact be different. In this paper an optimization procedure is proposed which integrates both processing and accident costs for different design schemes. In this procedure, some of the design variables are chosen with regard...
