EEG based Analysis and Classification of Children with Learning Disability Compared to Normal Children

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mirmohammad Sadeghi, Delaram Alsadat (Author) ; Jahed, Mehran (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Learning disability (LD) is a neurological condition that interferes with an individual’s ability to store, process, or produce information. There are different types of learning disabilities affecting reading, writing, speaking, spelling, etc. Based on a study conducted by National Center for Learning Disabilities, 2.4 million American public school students are diagnosed with learning disability. They attend school in order to learn and be successful while they do not know their learning process is different from their peers. LD diagnosis in children is especially important as such cases must be identified early enough in order to provide them with proper education. This project targets LD...

Increasing Life Time of Wireless Sensor Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Amiri, Zahra (Author) ; Hemmatyar, Afshin (Supervisor) ; Hajsadeghi, Khosro (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A large number of sensors are spread for monitoring of an area in a random manner. The aim is to have an efficient design for energy that can protect the coverage of the area. A number of sensor nodes that have high density and which are in the area have the duty of monitoring of the area. The aim of this process is to determine of maximum number of separate collections that they have a direct influence upon the life span of the network. The idea behind this approach is that the nodes in areas with low availability are less used as a data routing as well as nodes that have remaining energy. In order to reach this objective, the importance of each sensor node for its duty of protecting...

Design and Construction of a Soft Actuated Exoskeleton for Hand Rehabilitation of Stroke Patients

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Razavi Zadehgan, Ali Akbar (Author) ; Ghafari, Ali (Supervisor) ; Meghdari, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The main goal of this thesis is the design and development of a rehabilitation device for helping patients “to improve blood circulation” & retain and recover their abilities if possible that were lost during the stroke or a accident like that (my research in karaj/iran shows that it is possible by just movement of the specific body part). The focus is on hand in this thesis because Injuries to the hand are common and can be very debilitating since our hands are our primary means for interacting with our world. For rehabilitation in case of human hand there are several practices that should be done for patients either in home or in a rehabilitation center, time and money that is supposed to...

A Simultaneous Approach for Activity Type and Activity Duration of Disabled People

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hajivosough, Shaghayegh Sadat (Author) ; Samimi, Amir (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Daily activity patterns that include type and duration of activities are modeled simultaneously in MDCEV models. Conventionally, however, a diverse range of econometric models are used to sequentially model the decisions. Focusing on the disabled individuals, we aimed at comparing the prediction power of the two methods. A three level Nested Logit along with a Hazard model represent the sequential approach, the performance of which is compared to the MDCEV method. A random forest model is applied during the activity type prediction by MDCEV model. With considering 6.35 percent error in random forest model, the results confirmed that simultaneous approach improves activity type prediction by...

    Abstract
Feature extraction and classification are the most important parts of BCI systems. The new branch of BCI studies focuses on the design of a classifier that is trained to function properly for each individual. This problem is known as Transfer Learning. In between-subject classification, due to the differences in the neural signals' distribution of different individuals, using the common methods of feature extraction for training the classifier, does not lead to high accuracy for the test subject. As a result, in this study, we present a method for extracting features that perform well in between subjects classifications. The data that we used in this study are EEG signals recorded during...

A non-user-based BCI application for robot control

    Abstract
Steady State Visual Evoked Potential (SSVEP) based Brain Computer Interfaces (BCI) can be great assistance for people suffering from physical disabilities due to their high accuracy, high speed, an acceptable number of possible targets, etc. Many researchers have managed to design such systems. Most of these BCIs utilize methods for frequency detection which cause the system to need a training phase for each new user, making the system a user-based one. That is why our goal was to design a BCI that not only has accuracy and speed comparable to similar systems, but also does not need any training phase and thus can be used by new users right away. Our final design got a mean accuracy of...

A transfer learning algorithm based on linear regression for between-subject classification of EEG data

    , Article 25th International Computer Conference, Computer Society of Iran, CSICC 2020, 1 January 2020 through 2 January 2020 ; 2020 Samiee, N ; Sardouie, S. H ; Foroughmand Aarabi, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Classification is the most important part of brain-computer interface (BCI) systems. Because the neural activities of different individuals are not identical, using the ordinary methods of subject-dependent classification, does not lead to high accuracy in betweensubject classification problems. As a result, in this study, we propose a novel method for classification that performs well in between-subject classification. In the proposed method, at first, the subject-dependent classifiers obtained from the train subjects are applied to the test trials to obtain a set of scores and labels for the trials. Using these scores and the real labels of the labeled test trials, linear regression is...
