    Abstract
Power systems are undergoing significant transformations due to the introduction of microgrids (MGs) and distributed energy resources (DERs). In this regard, MGs as new entities in the system facilitate the integration of independently operated DERs to the power system. In this structure, DERs would be operated by independent agents, while the microgrid's control unit (MCU) would coordinate agents' resource scheduling to maximize social welfare. In this structure, the uncertainty of resources operated by agents could lead to real-time energy imbalance in the MG resulting in agents' loss of profits. Consequently, a novel transactive-based-scheme is developed in this article to facilitate...

    Incentive-Based flexible-ramp-up management in multi-microgrid distribution systems

    , Article IEEE Systems Journal ; Volume 16, Issue 3 , 2022 , Pages 5011-5022 ; 19328184 (ISSN) Fattaheian Dehkordi, S ; Abbaspour, A ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Lehtonen, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The increasing integration of renewable energy resources (RERs) and the expansion of multi-microgrid systems have transformed the operational condition of power systems. Respectively, the high-amount installation of RERs could result in the volatile changes exchanged-power of local systems, when their power generation drops suddenly. Nevertheless, the available ramp-up power for compensating the supply-demand gap in the power system could be limited due to the operational constraints of power networks and generation units. As a result, in this article, a transactive flexible-ramp-up-management-mechanism is offered in order to enable system operators to exploit the scheduling of microgrid...

    Abstract
This paper presents a novel stochastic planning framework for the integration of renewable distributed energy resources (DERs) into existing power systems without relying on new investments in the transmission networks. The upper-level problem of the proposed model aims at minimizing the total expected social cost of supplying demand that includes the expected cost of getting energy from conventional generating units and DERs, the congestion cost of transmission networks, and the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission cost, while each of the privately invested DER satisfies a specified rate of return. The lower-level problem clears the electricity market to find locational marginal prices (LMPs) and...

    Abstract
In this paper, a robust distribution system expansion planning (DSP) approach is presented to supply the load growth locally and move toward nearly zero energy local distribution areas (LDAs). In the proposed approach, a distribution system operator (DSO) is responsible for secure and optimum operation of LDAs. Therefore, investors on distribution system upgrades use this approach to maximize the profit on investments by determining the installation year of new distribution feeders and energy resources, distributed energy resource (DER) placements and sizes considered by corresponding DSOs. The accurate AC power flow solution is used and mathematical methods are developed to model the DSP as...

    Abstract
This paper presents a new framework for island formation prior to windstorms, which considers tree-caused failures of distribution networks. In the proposed framework, both direct and indirect effects of windstorms on distribution lines are quantified. Thus, a novel discrete Markov chain model is proposed for representing the failure modes of trees in each time interval of windstorm duration. This model categorizes 'healthy', 'uprooted', 'stem breakage', and 'branch breakage' states of a tree. In addition, a new line-tree interaction model is presented for calculating tree-caused failure probability of overhead lines. The results of the proposed Markov model are taken as inputs by the...

    Abstract
Increasing the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) inspired by environmental and governmental incentives, beside the introduction of multi-agent structure perspective have led to a paradigm shift of operational conditions in distribution systems. In this context, the traditional concept of fit and forget in the distribution grid management would not be efficient in the modern distribution systems and consequently new mechanisms should be developed in order to enable the distribution system operator (DSO) to efficiently manage the grid congestion caused by peak power output of DERs or load demands requests. In this article, the Stackelberg game concept is employed to develop an...

    Abstract
Recently, renewable energy sources (RESs) have increasingly being integrated into the power grids as a result of environmental and governmental perspectives. In this regard, the installation of RESs as potential power sources in active distribution systems would benefit the grid by decreasing the power losses, as well as addressing the fossil fuel shortages, and their environmental aspects. Nevertheless, the high-level integration of RESs as well as the development of distributed formations in local systems could challenge the reliable operation of the grid. In this context, conventional approaches could not optimally mitigate the regulation-voltage issue; therefore, utilities have to...

    Abstract
Distributed energy resources (DERs) play an important role in the future vision of distribution energy networks. This paper with the aim of promoting DERs role in energy markets proposes a new framework for the optimal bidding strategy of a Technical Virtual Power Plant (TVPP) in different markets. In the proposed framework, it is assumed that the TVPP energy power is distributed throughout a multi-carrier energy network (MCEN) which consists of district heat networks (DHNs) and a distributed electricity network (DEN). In the MCEN, CHP units are the linkage between DHNs and DEN. With the goal of maximizing the profit of TVPP in different local and wholesale energy markets, a bi-level...

    Abstract
Rapid growth of the variable and intermittent renewable generation in multimicrogrid distribution network (MMG-DN) has derived a gross violation in power balance due to the scarcity of ramp capacity. To neutralize this shortage, the present study develops a market-oriented approach for supplying flexibility ramping products (FRPs) in an MMG-DN. In this article, the proposed approach appraises a ramping capacity of local microgrids (MGs), which encompass various distributed energy resources through a bilevel programming. To do so, an interval-based security constraint economic dispatch process is accomplished at the upper level considering the network's requirement of upward/downward ramp...

    Abstract
Growing demand for flexible ramp products (FRPs) to maintain the power balance in active distribution networks (ADNs) has expanded the use of costly fast-start generators in the upstream real-time market. In order to limit the power system's reliance on these units, it is necessary to establish new sources for providing ADNs with FRPs. In this context, the present paper examines the abilities of distributed energy resources (DERs) and active loads for supplying the ramp capacity demands of ADNs. Accordingly, a local real-time market was established in the ADN, empowering several DERs and active loads to provide the network's FRPs demands. The proposed market was formed in the context of a...

    Abstract
This study proposes an optimal day-ahead (DA) electricity market offering model for a virtual power plant (VPP) formed by a mix of renewable distributed energy resources along with energy storage, such as electric vehicles. Two sources of uncertainty are considered, namely, wind power generation, modelled by an uncertainty set, and DA market price, modelled by scenarios. Opposite to classical robust optimisation approaches, the authors model maps minimal (worst-case) profits to a conservativeness parameter, while the classical robust optimisation maps conservativeness parameter to worst-case profits. In this regard, by using their optimisation framework, a VPP operator only deals with...
