Nano-resonator frequency response based on strain gradient theory

    , Article Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics ; Vol. 47, Issue. 36 , 2014 ; ISSN: 00223727 Miandoab, E. M ; Yousefi Koma, A ; Pishkenari, H. N ; Fathi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper aims to explore the dynamic behaviour of a nano-resonator under ac and dc excitation using strain gradient theory. To achieve this goal, the partial differential equation of nano-beam vibration is first converted to an ordinary differential equation by the Galerkin projection method and the lumped model is derived. Lumped parameters of the nano-resonator, such as linear and nonlinear springs and damper coefficients, are compared with those of classical theory and it is demonstrated that beams with smaller thickness display greater deviation from classical parameters. Stable and unstable equilibrium points based on classic and non-classical theories are also compared. The results...

Dynamic analysis of electrostatically actuated nanobeam based on strain gradient theory

    , Article International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics ; Volume 15, Issue 4 , 2014 ; ISSN: 02194554 Miandoab, E. M ; Pishkenari, H. N ; Yousefi Koma, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this study, dynamic response of a micro- and nanobeams under electrostatic actuation is investigated using strain gradient theory. To solve the governing sixth-order partial differential equation, mode shapes and natural frequencies of beam using Euler–Bernoulli and strain gradient theories are derived and then compared with classical theory. Galerkin projection is utilized to convert the partial differential equation to ordinary differential equations representing the system mode shapes. Accuracy of proposed one degree of freedom model is verified by comparing the dynamic response of the electrostatically actuated micro-beam with analogue equation and differential quadrature methods....

    , Article Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics ; Vol. 43, issue. 9 , July , 2014 , p. 1401-1421 ; ISSN: 00988847 Ghannad, M. A ; Jafarieh, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The simultaneous effects of soil-structure interaction, foundation uplift and inelastic behavior of the superstructure on total displacement response of soil-structure systems are investigated. The superstructure is modeled as an equivalent single-degree-of-freedom system with bilinear behavior mounted on a rigid foundation resting on distributed tensionless Winkler springs and dampers. It is well known that the behavior of soil-structure systems can be well described using a limited number of nondimensional parameters. Here, by introducing two new parameters, the concept is extended to inelastic soil-structure systems in which the foundation is allowed to uplift. An extensive parametric...

Requirements for soil-specific correlation between shear wave velocity and liquefaction resistance of sands

    , Article Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering ; Vol. 57, issue , 2014 , pp. 152-163 ; ISSN: 02677261 Ahmadi, M. M ; Akbari Paydar, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The application of the simplified method for evaluating the liquefaction potential based on shear wave velocity measurements has increased substantially due to its advantages, especially for microzonation of liquefaction potential. In the simplified method, a curve is proposed to correlate the cyclic resistance ratio (CRR) with overburden stress-corrected shear wave velocity (Vs1). However, the uniqueness of this curve for all types of soils is questionable. The objective of this research is to study whether the correlation between CRR and Vs1 is unique or not. Besides, the necessity of developing the soil-specific correlations is also investigated. Based on laboratory test data, a new...

    Abstract
This paper presents the dynamic response of uniform Timoshenko beams with arbitrary boundary conditions using Dynamic Green Function. An exact and direct modeling technique is stated to model beam structures with arbitrary boundary conditions subjected to the external load that is an arbitrary function of time t and coordinate x and the concentrated moving load. This technique is based on the Dynamic Green Function. The effect of different boundary conditions, load, and other parameters is assessed. Finally, some numerical examples are shown to illustrate the efficiency and simplicity of the new formulation based on the Dynamic Green Function

A new control method for the synchronous generator in an islanded microgrid is proposed based on a virtual droop scheme. The proposed strategy can effectively manage the real and reactive powers of the microgrid among the inverter and non-inverter based DG units. The steady state and dynamic...

Many frame specimens of different weights and configurations are subjected to seismic motions, and their responses are calculated using FE models. Some of these models were designed to account for eccentric...

Nonlinear dynamic analysis of a timoshenko beam resting on a viscoelastic foundation and traveled by a moving mass

    , Article Shock and Vibration ; Vol. 2014 , 2014 ; ISSN: 10709622 Mamandi, A ; Kargarnovin, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The dynamic response of a Timoshenko beam with immovable ends resting on a nonlinear viscoelastic foundation and subjected to motion of a traveling mass moving with a constant velocity is studied. Primarily, the beam's nonlinear governing coupled PDEs of motion for the lateral and longitudinal displacements as well as the beam's cross-sectional rotation are derived using Hamilton's principle. On deriving these nonlinear coupled PDEs the stretching effect of the beam's neutral axis due to the beam's fixed end conditions in conjunction with the von-Karman strain-displacement relations is considered. To obtain the dynamic responses of the beam under the act of a moving mass, derived nonlinear...

Nonlinear seismic response of concrete gravity dams due to foundation fault movement

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Vol. 21, issue. 5 , 2014 , pp. 1539-1548 ; ISSN: 10263098 Ghaemian, M ; Vafai, A. H ; Karimi, Z ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Not only should dams be evaluated for seismic shaking, but their capability to survive potential fault displacement in their foundations should also be assessed. Safety reviews of existing dams suggest that geological-seismic evaluation of some dam sites has failed to recognize the existence of possibly active faults. In this study, the nonlinear seismic behavior of concrete gravity dams, due to relative fault dislocation occurring in foundations, has been investigated. Two types of fault movement, including normal-slip and reverse-slip, have been considered. These two types, combined with the location of fault lines, with respect to the toe, middle, and heel of the dam base, angle of fault,...

    , Article Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering ; Vol. 63, issue , 2014 , pp. 184-192 Eskandari, M ; Ahmadi, S. F ; Khazaeli, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The dynamic analysis of a surface rigid foundation in smooth contact with a transversely isotropic half-space under a buried inclined time-harmonic load is addressed. By virtue of the superposition technique, appropriate Green[U+05F3]s functions, and employing further mathematical techniques, solution of the mixed-boundary-value problem is expressed in terms of two well-known Fredholm integral equations. Two limiting cases of the problem corresponding to the static loading and isotropic medium are considered and the available results in the literature are fully recovered. For the static case, the results pertinent to both frictionless and bonded contacts are obtained and compared. With the...

Speed control of servo drives with a flexible couplings using fractional order state feedback

    , Article PEDSTC 2014 - 5th Annual International Power Electronics, Drive Systems and Technologies Conference ; 2014 , p. 25-30 Tahami, F ; Moghadam, B. E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Using elastic couplings in servo motor drives may lead to torsional oscillations which are usually extinguished by reducing the bandwidth of the control system as a countermeasure. A high performance servo drive however needs fast dynamic characteristics. The conventional controllers, such as PI controllers, may not be able to improve the dynamic response while keeping the system stable. Fractional order modeling offers a good framework for flexible structures such as two mass servo drives. In this paper, the dynamic response and stability of two-mass servo drive is improved using a fractional order controller. The fractional order controller allows increasing the phase margin of the system...

    Abstract
A Cúk converter operating in discontinuous capacitor voltage mode (DCVM) is an inherent power factor correction converter. A reduced-order switch-network model of a Cúk converter in DCVM is developed, which is valid for both dc-dc and ac-dc applications. The model can be used for controller analysis and design. Moreover, a fast dynamic response controller is proposed, which is an integration of a switching-frequency control unit and a proportional-integral (PI) controller. The PI controller is in charge of duty ratio adjustment. In the proposed controller, unlike conventional PI controllers, switching frequency is no longer fixed and varies as load changes. The switching-frequency control...

    Abstract
Long-span bridges usually experience different input excitations at their ground supports that emanate from differences in wave arrival times, and soil conditions, as well as loss of coherency in arriving waves. These spatial variations can drastically influence the dynamic response; hence, this phenomenon must be considered in any vibration-based identification method. There are numerous Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) identification techniques that may be applied to data recorded at long-span bridges that experience spatial variations in their input motions. However, inertial soil-structure interaction effects severely reduce the accuracy of these techniques because the actual Foundation...

    Abstract
The dynamic response analysis of a delaminated composite beam with a general lay-up traversed under an arbitrary moving/non-moving force is presented. By employing the energy method and introducing a new finite element, the global mass and stiffness matrices for a Laminated Composite Beam (LCB) of Timoshenko type are derived in which the material couplings (bending-tension, bending-twist, and tension-twist couplings) with the Poisson's effect are considered. In deriving the governing equation the non-penetration condition is imposed by employing the method of Lagrange multipliers. Out of a self-developed finite element program, the natural frequencies and time response of such LCB are...

The obtained results for the free vibrations of delaminated beam are verified against reported similar results in the literature. Moreover, the maximum dynamic response of such a beam is compared...

    Abstract
In this paper, we present an analytical model for the large-signal analysis of the double quantum well (DQW) transistor laser. Our model is based on solving the continuity equation and the rate equations which incorporate the virtual states as a conversion mechanism. By using the presented model, effects of barrier width on DQW transistor laser static and dynamic performances are investigated. Also the static and dynamic responses of DQW transistor lasers are compared with single quantum well ones. Simulation results are in agreement with the numerical and experimental results reported by other researchers
