Incorporating two-part real-time pricing scheme into distribution system operation

    , Article Proceedings - 2014 Electrical Power and Energy Conference, EPEC 2014 ; 2014 , p. 178-183 Ghasemifard, M.-H ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Parvania, M ; Abbaspour, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Existing real-time pricing (RTP) schemes charge the whole customer's consumption at one highly volatile time varying price, which, in turn, imposes financial risk to participating customers. This paper presents a two-part RTP scheme aiming at efficient distribution system operation while mitigating customers' risk level imposed by volatile RTP prices. Our proposed RTP scheme offers two different RTP price signals. The first RTP price signal is used to charge customer's consumption up to its customer baseline load (CBL) which presents customer's consumption in the absence of RTP signals. The second RTP price signal is announced a day ahead of the actual operation, and can be updated in real...

Impacts of time-varying electricity rates on forward contract scheduling of DisCos

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Vol. 29, issue. 2 , 2014 , p. 733-741 ; ISSN: 8858977 Safdarian, A ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Lehtonen, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Time-varying electricity rates enable demand-side potentials, which provide an opportunity for distribution companies (DisCos) to hedge against the financial risk imposed by volatile spot market prices and uncertain customers' load. In particular, time-varying rates can be effective alternatives for at least a portion of costly forward contracts. This paper establishes a stochastic framework to determine optimal forward market purchases under time-varying rates. Various electricity rating strategies with different time intervals covering flat, time-of-use, and real-time pricing schemes are considered. The objective of the framework is to maximize DisCo's expected profit while the exposure...

Suppression of dynamic pull-in instability in electrostatically actuated strain gradient beams

    , Article 2014 2nd RSI/ISM International Conference on Robotics and Mechatronics, ICRoM 2014 ; 2014 , pp. 155-160 ; ISBN: 9781479967438 Edalatzadeh, M. S ; Vatankhah, R ; Alasty, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, vibration suppression of micro-or nano-scale beams subjected to nonlinear distributed electrostatic force is studied. For the sake of precision, we use the beam model derived from strain gradient elasticity theory aimed at prediction of size effect. In addition, the electrostatic force is considered with first order fringing field correction. The continuous model of the strain gradient beam is truncated by using Kantorovich method as a semi-analytical finite element method. A boundary control feedback law is proposed to suppress forced vibrations of the beam. Both measurements and actuations are taken place in the boundary to avoid spillover instabilities. Simulation results...

Particle selection through topographic templates in nematic colloids

    , Article Soft Matter ; Vol. 10, issue. 48 , Oct , 2014 , p. 9681-9687 Eskandari, Z ; Silvestre, N. M ; Telo Da Gama, M. M ; Ejtehadi, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Liquid crystal colloids have been proposed as suitable candidates for responsive photonic crystals. Large scale growth of such colloidal systems is, however, a challenge and recently template-assisted assembly has been proposed to guide the growth of colloidal crystals, with controlled symmetries, in nematic liquid crystals. Known for their long-range anisotropic interactions, these colloidal systems are stabilized typically at the center of the cells due to strong particle-wall repulsion from the confining substrates. This behaviour is dramatically changed in the presence of topographic patterning. Here we propose the use of topographic modulation of surfaces to select and localize...

    , Article Journal of Applied Polymer Science ; Vol. 131, issue. 20 , 2014 Kavoosi, G ; Nateghpoor, B ; Dadfar, S. M. M ; Dadfar, S. M. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this study, the properties of poly (vinyl alcohol)(PVA) films incorporated with Zataria multiflora essential oil (ZMO) as a potential antioxidant/antibacterial material was investigated. PVA films were prepared from PVA solutions (2% w/v) containing different concentrations of ZMO. Water solubility, moisture absorption, water swelling, and water vapor permeability for pure PVA films were 57 ± 1.1, 99 ± 3.2%, 337 ± 8%, and 0.453 ± 0.015 g mm/m2 h, respectively. Incorporation of ZMO into PVA films caused a significant decrease in water swelling and moisture absorption and increase in solubility and water vapor permeability. Tensile strength, elastic modulus, and elongation at break for pure...

Integrated guidance and control of elastic flight vehicle based on robust MPC

    , Article International Journal of Robust and Nonlinear Control ; 2014 Shamaghdari, S ; Nikravesh, S. K. Y ; Haeri, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Integrated guidance and control of an elastic flight vehicle based on constrained robust model predictive control is proposed. The design is based on a partial state feedback control law that minimizes a cost function within the framework of linear matrix inequalities. It is shown that the solution of the defined optimization problem stabilizes the nonlinear plant. Nonlinear kinematics and dynamics are taken into account, and internal stability of the closed-loop nonlinear system is guaranteed. The performance and effectiveness of the proposed integrated guidance and control against non-maneuvering and weaving targets are evaluated using computer simulations

A strain gradient Timoshenko beam element: Application to MEMS

    , Article Acta Mechanica ; Vol. 226, issue. 2 , Jul , 2014 , pp. 505-525 ; ISSN: 00015970 Kahrobaiyan, M. H ; Asghari, M ; Ahmadian, M. T ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The classical continuum theory not only underestimates the stiffness of microscale structures such as microbeams but is also unable to capture the size dependency, a phenomenon observed in these structures. Hence, the non-classical continuum theories such as the strain gradient elasticity have been developed. In this paper, a Timoshenko beam finite element is developed based on the strain gradient theory and employed to evaluate the mechanical behavior of microbeams used in microelectromechanical systems. The new beam element is a comprehensive beam element that recovers the formulations of strain gradient Euler–Bernoulli beam element, modified couple stress (another non-classical theory)...

Fully enriched weight functions in mesh-free methods for the analysis of linear elastic fracture mechanics problems

    , Article Engineering Analysis with Boundary Elements ; Vol. 43 , 2014 , pp. 1-8 Namakian, R ; Shodja, H. M ; Mashayekhi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The so-called enriched weight functions (EWFs) are utilized in mesh-free methods (MMs) to solve linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) problems; the following issues are of concern: convergence behavior; sufficiency of EWFs to capture singular fields around the crack-tip; and the preservation of the J-integral path-independency. EWFs prove useful in conjunction with the moving least square reproducing kernel method (MLSRKM); for this purpose, both EWFs and MLSRKM are modified. Since EWFs are not truly representative of the near-tip solution, fully EWFs (FEWFs) are introduced. Finally, some descriptive examples address the aforementioned concerns and the accuracy and efficacy of the...

The effects of nonlinearities on the vibration of viscoelastic sandwich plates

    , Article International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics ; Vol. 62 , 2014 , Pages 41-57 ; ISSN: 00207462 Mahmoudkhani, S ; Haddadpour, H ; Navazi, H. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The nonlinear free and forced bending vibration of sandwich plates with incompressible viscoelastic core is investigated under the effects of different source of nonlinearities. For the core constrained between stiffer layers, the transverse shear strains, as well as the rotations are assumed to be moderate. The linear and quadratic displacement fields are also adopted for the in-plane and out-of-plane displacements of the core, respectively. The assumption of moderate transverse strains requires a nonlinear constitutive equation which is obtained from a single-integral nonlinear viscoelastic model using the assumed order of magnitudes for linear strains and rotations. The 5th-order method...

Sandwich beam model for free vibration analysis of bilayer graphene nanoribbons with interlayer shear effect

    , Article Journal of Applied Physics ; Vol. 115, issue. 17 , May , 2014 ; ISSN: 00218979 Nazemnezhad, R ; Shokrollahi, H ; Hosseini-Hashemi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this study, sandwich beam model (SM) is proposed for free vibration analysis of bilayer graphene nanoribbons (BLGNRs) with interlayer shear effect. This model also takes into account the intralayer (in-plane) stretch of graphene nanoribbons. The molecular dynamics (MD) simulations using the software LAMMPS and Adaptive Intermolecular Reactive Empirical Bond Order (AIREBO) potential are done to validate the accuracy of the sandwich model results. The MD simulation results include the two first frequencies of cantilever BLGNRs with different lengths and two interlayer shear moduli, i.e., 0.25 and 4.6GPa. These two interlayer shear moduli, 0.25 and 4.6GPa, can be obtained by sliding a small...

An accurate semi-analytical method for an arbitrarily oriented edge or interior crack in an anisotropic homogeneous elastic solid

    , Article European Journal of Mechanics, A/Solids ; Vol. 45 , May , 2014 , pp. 133-142 ; ISSN: 09977538 Kamali, M. T ; Shodja, H. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this work, a general semi-analytical method for the determination of the elastic fields within an anisotropic homogeneous elastic solid with an inclined edge or interior crack is developed. In this method, the displacement field is represented as a sum of a function and a finite series of functions with unknown coefficients. The functions are constructed in such a way that all the essential homogeneous and inhomogeneous boundary conditions are satisfied exactly and, moreover, the displacement discontinuity across the crack faces as well as the exact singular behaviour of the stress field at the crack-tip are captured. The unknown coefficients are determined by utilizing the principle of...

    , Article Polymer International ; Vol. 63, issue. 4 , April , 2014 , pp. 689-694 ; ISSN: 09598103 Jafariesfad, N ; Ramazani, S. A ; Azinfar, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this study, polypropylene/carbon nanotube nanocomposites were prepared via in situ polymerization using a bi-supported Ziegler-Natta catalytic system. In this system, magnesium ethoxide and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are jointly used as catalyst supports. SEM images reveal the distribution and quite good dispersion of MWCNTs throughout the polypropylene (PP) matrix. The thermal properties of the samples were examined using DSC and TGA tests. The results show that the crystallization temperature of the nanocomposites significantly increases while the melting point is not markedly affected. In addition, the thermal stability is improved. The melt rheological properties of PP/MWCNT...

    , Article Composites Part B: Engineering ; Vol. 60 , 2014 , pp. 413-422 ; ISSN: 13598368 Molaei Najafabadi, M ; Ahmadian, M. T ; Taati, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Design and development of FGMs as the heat treatable materials for high-temperature environments with thermal protection require understanding of exact temperature and thermal stress distribution in the transient state. This information is primary tool in the design and optimization of the devices for failure prevention. Frequently FGMs are used in many applications that presumably produce thermal energy transport via wave propagation. In this study, transient non-Fourier temperature and associated thermal stresses in a functionally graded slab symmetrically heated on both sides are determined. Hyperbolic heat conduction equation in terms of heat flux is used for obtaining temperature...

Molecular dynamics simulation of orientation dependency in the shock-induced phase transition of C60 fullerene single crystals into amorphous diamond

    , Article Phase Transitions ; Vol. 87, Issue. 3 , 2014 , Pages 271-285 ; ISSN: 01411594 Mahnama, M ; Naghdabadi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A molecular dynamics simulation of the shock-wave propagation in the face-centered cubic (FCC) structured C60 fullerene along the <100>, <110> and <111> crystallographic directions is performed. For this purpose, the response of the material under different shock-wave loadings is studied through Hugoniot curves. Three regimes of the material behavior have been observed from fully elastic to elastic-plastic to plastic. The Hugoniot elastic limit and the phase transition are also investigated along different crystallographic directions. It is shown that the shock wave travels faster along the <110> and <111> directions than in the <100> direction in the material. Comparing the results with the...

Axial-torsional vibrations of rotating pretwisted thin walled composite beams

    , Article International Journal of Mechanical Sciences ; Vol. 80 , 2014 , pp. 93-101 ; ISSN: 00207403 Sina, S. A ; Haddadpour, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Axial-torsional vibrations of rotating pretwisted thin-walled composite box beams exhibiting primary and secondary warping are investigated. Considering the nonlinear strain-displacement relations, the coupled nonlinear axial-torsional equations of motion are derived using Hamilton's principle. Ignoring the axial inertia term leads to differential equation of motion in terms of elastic torsion in the case of axially immovable beams. Centrifugal load in the presence of material anisotropy and pretwist angle leads to an induced static torque. The nonlinear equation should be linearized about the corresponding equilibrium state to obtain the linear differential equation of motion. Extended...

Size-dependent instability of carbon nanotubes under electrostatic actuation using nonlocal elasticity

    , Article International Journal of Mechanical Sciences ; Vol. 80 , 2014 , pp. 144-152 ; ISSN: 00207403 Seyyed Fakhrabadi, M. M ; Rastgoo, A ; Taghi Ahmadian, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, the classical and nonlocal elasticity are applied to investigate the deflection and instability of electrostatically actuated carbon nanotubes. The results are presented for different geometries and boundary conditions. They reveal that increasing radius and gap and decreasing length confine to increasing pull-in voltages of the carbon nanotubes. The results prove that application of the nonlocal elasticity theorem leads to stiffer structures with higher pull-in voltages. Thus, in order to obtain more accurate results about the mechanical and electromechanical behaviors of the carbon nanotubes, one should apply the nonclassical elasticity theories such as that applied in this...

Effect of coarse aggregate volume on fracture behavior of self compacting concrete

    , Article Construction and Building Materials ; Volume 52 , 15 February , 2014 , Pages 137-145 ; ISSN: 09500618 Nikbin, I. M ; Beygi, M. H. A ; Kazemi, M. T ; Vaseghi Amiri, J ; Rahmani, E ; Rabbanifar, S ; Eslami, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper presents the effect of volume of coarse aggregate on fracture characteristics of self- compacting concrete (SCC). Based on an experimental programme, a series of three point bending tests were carried out on 58 notched beams. SCC was prepared with coarse aggregate in varying percentages of 30%, 40%, 50% and 60% (as the percentage of the total aggregate volume). For all mixes, the fracture parameters were analyzed by the work-of- fracture method (WFM) and by the size effect method (SEM) to obtain a suitable correlation between these methods which is used to calibrate fracture numerical models. The results showed that with decrease of volume of coarse aggregate from 60% to 30% in...

Surface/interface effects on the formation of misfit dislocation in a core-shell nanowire

    , Article Philosophical Magazine ; Volume 94, Issue 5 , 11 February , 2014 , Pages 492-519 ; ISSN: 14786435 Enzevaee, C ; Gutkin, M. Y ; Shodja, H. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The misfit strain within the core of a two-phase free-standing core-shell nanowire resulting in the generation of an edge misfit dislocation or an edge misfit dislocation dipole at the core-shell interface is considered theoretically within both the classical and surface/interface elasticity approaches. The critical conditions for the misfit dislocation generation are studied and discussed in detail with special attention to the non-classical surface/interface effect. It is shown that this effect is significant for fine cores of radius smaller than roughly 20 interatomic distances. The positive and negative surface/interface Lamé constants mostly make the generation of the misfit dislocation...

    , Article Applied Mathematical Modelling ; Volume 38, Issue 3 , 1 February , 2014 , Pages 1176-1186 ; ISSN: 0307904X Baghani, M ; Mazaheri, H ; Salarieh, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to present efficient and accurate analytical expressions for large amplitude free vibration analysis of single and double tapered beams on elastic foundation. Geometric nonlinearity is considered using the condition of inextensibility of neutral axis. Moreover, the elastic foundation consists of a linear and cubic nonlinear parts together with a shearing layer. The nonlinear governing equation is solved by employing the variational iteration method (VIM). This study shows that the second-order approximation of the VIM leads to highly accurate solutions which are valid for a wide range of vibration amplitudes. The effects of different parameters on the nonlinear...

    , Article Advanced Materials Research ; Volume 829, 2014 , 2014 , Pages 279-283 ; ISSN: 10226680 ; ISBN: 9783037859070 Sherafati, M ; Mousavi, S. M. A ; Emam Djomeh, Z ; Bagheri, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Nano-biocomposites are a new class of hybrid materials composed of nano-sized filler (nanofiller) incorporated into a bio-based matrix. Such an association between eco-friendly biopolymers and nano-objects, with the aim to obtain synergic effects, is one of the most innovating routes to enhance the properties of these bio-matrices. In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in Starch as an inexpensive and renewable source has been used as a filler for environmentally friendly plastics for about two decades. However, the poor mechanical properties of starch based biopolymers, leads to use of nanoparticles as reinforcing materials. In the present study, the influence of a...
