    Abstract
Bacteriorhodopsin is a heptahelical protein found in the purple membrane of Halobacterium salinarum. The performance of bacteriorhodopsin was evaluated as a sensitizer in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Bacteriorhodopsin was efficiently immobilized on the titanium dioxide nanoparticles and then tested for its ability to convert solar radiation to electricity. The photovoltaic performance of DSSC based on the bacteriorhodopsin sensitizer has been examined. Under AM1.5 irradiation, a short-circuit current of 0.28 mA cm−2, open-circuit voltages of 0.51 V, fill factor of 0.62, and an overall energy conversion efficiency of 0.09 % are achieved employing platinum as a counter electrode. Abstract
This paper presents a single-phase Cascaded H-Bridge (CHB) inverter for photovoltaic applications. The proposed control strategy permits the optimum control of each string of PV panels in different insolation conditions. Based on the presented mathematical analysis, an analytic constraint is derived to check the stable operation of the inverter. A modified MPPT control strategy is also proposed based on this new condition. This strategy enhances the stability margins of the system by changing the operating point of some PV arrays. In this approach, the extracted power from high power cell is reduced to prevent instability issue and to avoid injection of highly distorted current into the...

Using the direct simulation Monte Carlo method to study the effect of wall temperature variation on gas mixing evolution through micro T-mixers

    , Article 11th International Energy Conversion Engineering Conference ; 2013 Darbandi, M ; Sabouri, M ; Lekzian, E ; Schneider, G. E ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
In this work, we study the gas mixing behavior in a micro T-mixer using the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method. The gas mixing process is monitored through a T-mixer, which is fed by two different CO and N2 gases; flowing into the T-mixer through the upper and lower inlets. We investigate the effects of axial and lateral wall temperature gradients on the mixing evolution at different rarefaction levels. The achieved results show that any temperature difference between the channel walls would result in an increase in mixing length for the chosen wall temperature gradient ranges and the studies pressure cases. Our observations show that a positive temperature gradient toward the...

    2013
    Abstract
Continuity of service of wind energy conversion systems as well as their reliability and performances are some of the major concerns in this power generation area. Six-legs AC/DC/AC converters are normally used in modern wind energy systems like as in the system with a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG). A sudden failure of the converter can lead to the total or partial loss of the control of the phase currents and can cause serious system malfunction or shutdown. Therefore, to prevent the spread of the fault to the other system components and to ensure continuity of service, fault tolerant converter topologies associated to quick and effective fault detection and compensation methods...

    Abstract
The demand for bidirectional DC/DC converters is increasing because of their potential capability for sustainable energy conversion systems where the power is to be captured from or stored in energy storage elements. This paper presents a three-phase series resonant bidirectional converter which is suitable for high power applications. The converter consists of two three-phase full bridge networks, the resonant tanks and a high frequency three-phase transformer. All switches can work either in ZVS or ZCS mode. The voltage drop on leakage inductances is minimized by choosing the switching frequency close to the resonant frequency, allowing high efficient power conversion. The phasor analysis...

    , Article Renewable Energy ; Volume 36, Issue 11 , 2011 , Pages 3187-3194 ; 09601481 (ISSN) Shahbazi, M ; Poure, P ; Saadate, S ; Zolghadri, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, application of a five-leg converter in Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) for Wind Energy Conversion Systems (WECS) is investigated. The five-leg structure and its PWM control are studied and performances are compared with the classical six-leg topology. The main drawback of five-leg converter with respect to the six-leg back-to-back converter is the need to increase the dc-link voltage for the same operation point, i.e. the same powers in case of WECS. So, different methods for the reduction of the required dc-link voltage in the five-leg case are studied. The five-leg converter is used to replace the conventional six-leg one, with the same ability. For the performance...

    Abstract
Thermodynamical optimization for energy conversion system can be performed by decreasing entropy generation. For calculation of entropy, we need to know entropy of ideal gases at 298 K as a reference point. Entropy is a thermodynamic quantity which is not easily measured and prediction of entropy by molecular structures for new designed molecules may be a challenge. An easy and accurate equation for prediction of absolute entropy of pure ideal gas at 298 K was introduced for the first time based on the quantitative structure property relationship (QSPR) approach. Thousand seven hundred pure chemical compounds and 3224 molecular descriptors were used for finding this easy equation by genetic...

    Abstract
Lead sulfide quantum dots (PbS QDs) were decorated onto a graphene surface in a semi-core-shell structure using supercritical ethanol. The temperature of ethanol played significant role in controlling size and agglomeration of QDs as well as the extent of reduction of graphene. Average size of the QDs was estimated by transmission electron microscopy to be around 3.96 nm and by quantum models to be about 4.34 nm. PbS QDs prepared at 330 °C were of high purity, and the yield was 99%. Instrumental and chemical analyses demonstrated formation of a strong bond between PbS QDs and graphene, through a Pb-O-C bridge. UV and photoluminescence measurements along with theoretical considerations...

    Elsevier  2015
    Abstract
In this research TiO2 nanocrystals with sizes about 11-70 nm were grown by hydrothermal method. The process was performed in basic autoclaving pH in the range of 8.0-12.0. The synthesized anatase phase TiO2 nanocrystals were then applied in the phtoanode of the dye sensitized solar cells. It was shown that the final average size of the nanocrystals was larger when the growth was carried out in higher autoclaving pHs. The photoanodes made of TiO2 nanocrystals prepared in the pHs of 8.0 and 9.0 represented low amounts of dye adsorption and light scattering. The performance of the corresponding dye sensitized solar cells was also not acceptable. Nevertheless, the energy conversion efficiency...
