Terminal holding time minimization by dynamic CDA routing algorithm

    , Article 29th Congress of the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences, ICAS 2014 ; September , 2014 ; ISBN: 3932182804 Malaek, S. M ; Enayatollahi, F ; Parastari, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This article is focused on the application of 'Continuous Descent Approach' [CDA] to reduce the overall terminal traffic wastage of time and fuel consumption as well as reducing environmental emissions. This goal is achieved by introducing an online alternative CDA route under management of a heuristic optimization algorithm that minimizes the overall holding time. Performing a study on Atlanta international Hartsfield-Jackson airport, ATL, the results show considerable 60% decrease in cost function. Such achievement encourages the idea of implementing 'Dynamic CDA Routing Algorithm' [DCRA]

Multi-objective planning model for integration of distributed generations in deregulated power systems

    , Article Iranian Journal of Science and Technology, Transaction B: Engineering ; Volume 34, Issue 3 , 2010 , Pages 307-324 ; 10286284 (ISSN) Soroudi, A. R ; Ehsan, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
This paper presents a long-term dynamic multi-objective model for distributed generation investment. The proposed model optimizes three objectives, namely active losses, costs and environmental emissions and determines the optimal schemes of sizing, sitting of DG units and specially the dynamics of investment over the planning period. The Pareto optimal solutions of the problem are found using a GA algorithm and finally a fuzzy satisfying method is applied to select the optimal solution considering the desires of the planner. The solutions of Pareto optimal front are analyzed to extract general useful information for planners about the appropriate DG technologies and placement schemes. The...

Upcoming challenges of future electric power systems: Sustainability and resiliency

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 23, Issue 4 , 2016 , Pages 1565-1577 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Safdarian, A ; Moeini Aghtaie, M ; Ghorani, R ; Rastegar, M ; Farzin, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Going back and taking a quick glance at the history of developed countries prove that prosperity of any society is tightly intertwined with resiliency and sustainability of its preliminary infrastructures. Surely, in modern societies, electricity is among the most important infrastructures whose resiliency and sustainability are a key driving force toward development of the society. This is verified by the fact that since the industrial revolution, per capita electricity consumption has been taken as a key index showing the level of economic development and standard of living in a country. This paper focuses on the concept of resiliency and sustainability of electric power systems. The...

Profit-based unit commitment of integrated CHP-thermal-heat only units in energy and spinning reserve markets with considerations for environmental CO2 emission cost and valve-point effects

    , Article Energy ; Volume 133 , 2017 , Pages 621-635 ; 03605442 (ISSN) Nazari, M. E ; Ardehali, M. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2017
    Abstract
For the purposes of lowering environmental emission cost and increasing economic profit, energy efficient combined heat and power (CHP) units can be integrated with conventional separate heat and power production units to meet heat and power demands. The goal of this study is to develop and examine a novel heuristic and deterministic optimization algorithm for solving the profit-based unit commitment (PBUC) problem for a generation company with integrated CHP-thermal-heat only system for (i) satisfying demands for heat and power, (ii) selling spinning reserve for power, (iii) reducing environmental CO2 emission cost, and (iv) accounting for valve-point effects for steam turbines. For...

Extended energy return on investment of multiproduct energy systems

    , Article Energy ; Volume 192 , 2020 Salehi, M ; Khajehpour, H ; Saboohi, Y ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Energy Return on Investment (EROI) is an indicator of how efficient is an energy supply system. In the present study, the conventional approach of EROI assessment is extended to include the equivalent energy investment needed for offsetting the life cycle environmental impacts. Moreover, the issue of allocation of the invested energy among different by-products is addressed. The EROI of multiple products has been specified using different benchmarks of price, energy content, exergy content, and exergy costs. The application of the concept is demonstrated through a case study of an Iranian oil production unit. The overall conventional and environmentally-extended EROI values of the produced...

Green products from herbal medicine wastes by subcritical water treatment

    , Article Journal of Hazardous Materials ; Volume 424 , 2022 ; 03043894 (ISSN) Jouyandeh, M ; Tavakoli, O ; Sarkhanpour, R ; Sajadi, S. M ; Zarrintaj, P ; Rabiee, N ; Akhavan, O ; Lima, E. C ; Saeb, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Herbal medicine wastes (HMWs) are byproducts of medicine factories, which are mainly landfilled for their environmental problems. Only bearing in mind the contamination and concerns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and environmental emissions, the worth of herbal medicine wastes management and conversion to green products can be understood. In this work, subcritical water treatment was carried out batch-wise in a stainless tube reactor in the pressure range of 0.792–30.0 MPa, varying the temperature (127–327 °C) and time (1–60 min) of extraction. This resulted in new and green material sources, including organic acids, amino acids, and sugars. Amazingly, at very low extraction times (below 5...
