    Abstract
As a matter of course, the unprecedented ascending penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs), mainly harvesting renewable energies (REs), is concomitant with environmentally friendly concerns. This type of energy resources are innately uncertain and bring about more uncertainties in the power system, consequently, necessitates probabilistic analyses of the system performance. Moreover, the uncertain parameters may have a considerable level of correlation to each other, in addition to their uncertainties. The two point estimation method (2PEM) is recognized as an appropriate probabilistic method in small scale or even medium scale problems. This paper develops a new methodology for...

Optimum hello interval for a connected homogeneous topology in mobile wireless sensor networks

    , Article Telecommunication Systems ; Vol. 52, issue. 4 , April , 2013 , pp. 2475-2488 ; Online ISSN: 1572-9451 Nayebi, A ; Sarbazi-Azad, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Topology of a mobile wireless sensor/ad hoc network is prone to link breakages due to node mobility which compels the periodic re-construction of the topology in so called ""hello"" intervals. The problem addressed in this paper is determining the maximum ""hello"" interval preserving the connectivity of a homogeneous topology with high probability. In order to study the optimum ""hello"" interval, statistical topology lifetime (STL) is formally defined as a value of ""hello"" interval that ensures statistical connectivity with a given threshold. Temporal properties of the topology are studied based on two phenomena; one concerning a connectivity phase transition with time and the other one...

The design of an estimation model for environmental liability insurance (ELIS)

    , Article International Journal of Environmental Research ; Vol. 8, Issue. 1 , 2014 , Pages 193-204 ; ISSN: 17356865 MirzaEbrahim Tehrani, M ; Abbaspour, M ; Nouri, J ; Mazloomi, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Pricing for an insurance policy can be described as the process of calculation of expected compensation to be paid to property losers as well as associated costs of potential risks. Loss forecast is accurate if the risks will be identified appropriately in order to calculate the frequency and expected severity of losses. This is particularly important about environmental risks since most of them appear in the long run. Environmental risk assessment model is both able to estimate the environmental liability premium for environmental pollution and degradation, and it can play a valuable role in promoting this industry. ELIS (Environmental Liability Insurance) software calculates the...

Given this information, some three-level codes are provided for emerging new cognitive radio users. Furthermore, analytical results of the system performance in a typical cognitive radio...

Estimation of naturally fractured oil reservoir properties using the material balance method

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 21, Issue 3 , 2014 , Pages 781-791 ; ISSN: 10263098 Ebrahimi, N ; Jamshidi, S ; Gholinezhad, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In fractured reservoirs, a large variation of permeability due to the presence of fractures leads to changes in the production mechanism compared to conventional reservoirs. Hence, an appropriate model with the ability to describe the reservoir properly can provide a more confident prediction of its future performance. One of the features of a representative model is the number and height of the matrix blocks. The determination of these two parameters is one of the decisive steps in the calculation of an accurate amount of oil production from these reservoirs. In fact, matrix height shows its effect as a gravity force, which is one of the driving mechanisms. If the matrix height is less than...

Comparison of the drift spectra generated using continuous and lumped-mass beam models

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 20, Issue 5 , 2013 , Pages 1337-1348 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Rofooei, F. R ; Shodja, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
The drift spectrum, as a new measure of earthquake-induced demands in structures, was developed using a uniform-stiffness continuous beam model. Practical limitations in the procedures based on such models have caused structural engineers to pay little attention to drift spectra. In this paper, a method is proposed to estimate the seismic-induced inter-story drift demands, using the modal analysis technique of lumped mass, non-uniform beam models. The proposed approach is simple and can overcome many deficiencies of the previous methods. It can take into account the very important effect of height-wise stiffness reduction on drift demands, without the numerical difficulties usually...

A subsampling-predictor associated approach for fast global motion estimation

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 19, Issue 6 , December , 2012 , Pages 1746-1753 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Ahmadi, A ; Talebi, S ; Salehinejad, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Global Motion Estimation (GME) has many important roles in numerous applications, such as video compression, image stabilization, video-object segmentation, and etc. One well-known GME method is the gradient-based technique. This method uses optimization techniques, like the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm, to minimize estimation error. Such algorithms require an initial value for the initializing step. In this paper, we propose a simple and reliable GME structure with a new predictor. This structure uses a three-step search and a predictor for the initializing step. It is also incorporated with a fast GME method that uses pixel subsampling. This incorporation reduces the computational...

    Abstract
PV generation variability and uncertainty significantly influence operation of the power systems with high penetration of PV sources. The potential impact of distributed PV generation on ramp rate requirements in the IEEE 24-bus system is evaluated in this paper. PV generation and load are, here, probabilistically modeled using actual data and curve fitting approach. Probabilistic unit commitment (UC) based on unit de-commitment method combined with two point estimate method (2-PEM) is used to determine the ramp rate required to compensate for the PV power fluctuations. The proposed method considers stochastic factors and their effects on the dispatch results. Two scenarios are studied to...

    Abstract
The rapid growth in use of renewable intermittent energy resources, like wind turbines (WTs) and solar panels, in distribution networks has increased the need for having an accurate and efficient method of handling the uncertainties associated with these technologies. In this paper, the unsymmetrical two point estimate method (US2PEM) is used to handle the uncertainties of renewable energy resources. The uncertainty of intermittent generation of WT, photo voltaic cells, and also electric loads, as input variables, are taken into account. The variation of active losses and imported power from the main grid are defined as output variables. The US2PEM is compared to symmetrical two point...

    Abstract
Reliability assessment of phonemes, syllabi, words, concepts or utterances has become the key feature of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) engines in order to make a decision to accept or reject a hypothesis. In this paper, we propose utterance-level confidence annotation based on combination of features extracted from multiple knowledge sources in Persian language. The experiment was conducted first to examine the performance of individual features, then to combine them using statistical data analysis and density estimation methods to assign a confidence score to utterances. Using the data collected from a Persian spoken dialogue system, we show that combining features from independent...
