    Abstract
Two carbon composite materials were prepared by mixing avocado biochar and methyl polysiloxane (MK). Firstly, MK was dissolved in ethanol, and then the biochar was added at different times. In sample 1 (R1), the time of adding biochar was immediately after dissolving MK in ethanol, and in sample 2 (R2), after 48 h of MK dissolved in ethanol. The samples were characterized by nitrogen adsorption/desorption measurements obtaining specific surface areas (SBET) of 115 m2 g−1 (R1) and 580 m2 g−1 (R2). The adsorbents were further characterized using scanning electron microscopy, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, adsorption of vapors of n-heptane and water, thermal analysis, Bohem titration, pHpzc, and...

    , Article Fuel ; Volume 321 , 2022 ; 00162361 (ISSN) Karimi Motaalegh Mahalegi, H ; Mardani, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
A numerical examination is carried out on the experimental MILD turbulent spray burner of Delft Spray in Hot Co-flow, DSHC. The RANS approach is combined with the Lagrangian tracking of droplets for modeling the pressure-swirl atomizer. The EDC combustion model is employed, to take into account detailed chemical mechanisms. Predictions show that the structure of the triple-flame of liquid fuel in the atmospheric condition is different from the conventional gaseous triple-flames. Furthermore, the structure of the MILD spray flame is compared to the non-MILD spray flame. The flame index shows that the triple-flame structure in the conventional spray flame that consists of two outer and middle...

Assessment of optimal reaction progress variable characteristics for partially premixed flames

    , Article Combustion Theory and Modelling ; Volume 26, Issue 5 , 2022 , Pages 797-830 ; 13647830 (ISSN) Chitgarha, F ; Ommi, F ; Farshchi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The reaction progress variable is a crucial concept in the advanced flamelet combustion models. As a controlling variable, a well-defined progress variable must consider the essential features of the combustion process. It is usually a heuristically defined linear combination of some major chemical species mass fractions. However, such a simple definition could lead to inaccurate results for the fuel-rich reactive mixtures or complicated fuels, due to the vast number of chemical species in the combustion process. In this paper, a new method for generating a reaction progress variable is proposed through solving a constrained optimisation problem. The proposed method uses a genetic algorithm...

Comparison among various configurations of hybrid distillation–membrane setups for the energy efficiency improvement of bioethanol distillery: a simulation study

    , Article Journal of Chemical Technology and Biotechnology ; October , 2021 ; 02682575 (ISSN) Iftikhar, S ; Aslam, Z ; Ali, U ; Akhtar, A ; Sharif University of Technology
John Wiley and Sons Ltd  2021
    Abstract
BACKGROUND: Hybrid distillation–membrane setups have attracted attention in recent years due to their lower energy usage for ethanol purification. Membrane separation processes operate without heating that reduces energy demand. However, it is somewhat challenging to select the optimal material and process for a membrane purifying ethanol, especially to get an ethanol purity of 99.99% with maximum recovery. RESULTS: In this study, three different configurations of hybrid distillation–membrane setups are proposed consisting of distillation–pervaporation/vapor permeation processes by considering ceramic, polymeric and composite membranes. The design of hybrid processes is performed by coupling...

    Abstract
The lipase-immobilized polyethyleneimine (PEI)- and polyacrylic acid (PAA)–coated magnetic silica nanocomposite particles (L-PEI-MS and L-PAA-MS, respectively) were prepared and applied at various transesterification reaction conditions. The reactions were carried out with soybean, sunflower, canola, and palm oils along with methanol or ethanol in the solvent-free and n-hexane systems. The highest fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) and fatty acid ethyl ester (FAEE) synthesis yields were obtained from the transesterification of palm oil, i.e., almost 7.7–10.2% higher than other oils. At the constant reaction conditions, the application of ethanol leads to higher (6.0–8.7%) reaction yields in...

AC characterization of three-dimensional reduced graphene oxide/molybdenum disulfide nanorose hybrids for ethanol vapor detection

    , Article Applied Surface Science ; Volume 520 , August , 2020 Mirmotallebi, M ; Iraji zad, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B. V  2020
    Abstract
A novel AC impedance study on three-dimensional hybrid structures of graphene sheets/MoS2 nanorose (GMS) toward ethanol vapor detection is presented in this work. These defective 3D hybrid porous structures are sensitive to the presence of different gases as a result of charge transfer with gas species, as well as a change in the effective capacitance of the system. The sensing behavior of the samples is investigated throughout time-dependent impedance measurement and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The sensor response is estimated at about 20% to 10 ppm ethanol vapor, with the response and recovery times about 3.2 s and 0.8 s, respectively. Sensing mechanism proposed to...

Bioethanol supply chain network design considering land characteristics

    , Article Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews ; Volume 119 , 2020 Rahemi, H ; Torabi, S. A ; Avami, A ; Jolai, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Biomass is becoming an increasingly widespread source of energy. Yet land, as one of the most important resources in biomass production, is surprisingly understudied in the literature of biomass supply chain planning. This study proposes a novel framework that combines the literature of bioethanol supply chain design with agricultural land planning to simultaneously address optimal supply chain planning and sustainable land use in a bioethanol supply chain. A bi-objective mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model is proposed to formulate the optimal design and planning of a bioethanol supply chain network considering competition of food and biomass feedstock over the available croplands....

Investigating reliable conditions for hewl as an amyloid model in computational studies and drug interactions

    Abstract
A number of conformational diseases in humans have been associated with protein/peptide fibrillation known as amyloid. Although extensive studies have been conducted in understanding the molecular basis of amyloid formation, a detailed mechanism is still missing. Experimentally, HEWL (hen egg white lysozyme) has been exploited ubiquitously as a model protein for amyloid fibrillation and drug inhibition. However, computational studies investigating fibril formation of HEWL have been a difficult task to perform mainly due to high stability of lysozymes and the absence of crystal structures of HEWL fibril oligomers. In this study, we have examined various conditions of HEWL amyloid formation...

    Abstract
Moderate or intense low-oxygen dilution (MILD) combustion of liquid fuels has attracted attention because of its advantages in industrial burners and gas turbine applications. Here, numerical investigation has been conducted on an experimental MILD turbulent spray burner. The H∥ flame of Delft spray in a hot co-flow burner is selected, and the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes/eddy dissipation concept framework with 40 species/180 reversible reactions through a skeletal chemical mechanism is used in addition to unsteady Lagrangian tracking of spray droplets to investigate the flame structure and chemical kinetic of reacting flow field. At first, current numerical results were compared with...

    Abstract
In this work, we present the design and fabrication of a novel nanocomposite based on noble metal and metal oxide nanoparticles dispersed on highly porous carbon obtained via the pyrolysis of an inorganic complex and metal-organic frameworks. This nanocomposite is prepared by a two-step procedure: first, the composite support of nanoporous carbon (NPC) is obtained by the direct carbonization of the Cr-benzene dicarboxylic ligand (BDC) MOF in an Argon atmosphere at 500 °C (Cr2O3-NPC). A mixture containing Cr2O3-NPC and [PtCl(SnCl3)(SMe2)2] is then prepared, and underflow of Argon is heated to 380 °C. Finally, Pt-SnO2 nanoparticles are loaded on the Cr2O3-NPC support, and the obtained...

    Abstract
Despite their potential applications, a limited number of studies for synthesizing vertical MoS2 nanoflakes especially via CVD have been reported so far, which generally involve tedious complex- and/or multi-step growth processes. In this study, direct synthesis of vertical MoS2 nanoflakes grown on the SiO2/Si substrate during a rapid sulfidation process by CVD method has been reported. Material characterization was performed using Raman spectroscopy, XRD and FE-SEM. The XRD results indicated the dominant phase of 2H–MoS2 within the synthesized layers. The characteristic distance between the two dominant peaks of E1 2g and A1g in the Raman spectra confirms the multi-layered structure for...
