    , Article International Journal of Environmental Research ; Vol. 8, Issue. 1 , 2014 , Pages 39-48 ; ISSN: 17356865 Kargarsharifabad, H ; Shafii, M. B ; Rahni, M. T ; Abbaspour, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The use of solar collectors in combination with heat pipes is rapidly growing in recent years. Heat pipes, as heat transfer components, have undeniable advantages in comparison with other alternatives. The most important advantage is their high rate of heat transfer at minor temperature differences. Although there have been numerous studies on the heat analysis or first thermodynamic analysis of flat plate solar collectors in combination with heat pipes, the exergy analysis of these collectors is needed to be investigated. In this work, energy and exergy analysis of a flat plate solar collector with a heat pipe is conducted theoretically. Next, the exergy efficiency of pulsating heat pipe...

Thermodynamic analysis of a hybrid gas turbine/thermoacoustic heat pump/refrigeration engine

    , Article International Journal of Exergy ; Volume 15, Issue 2 , 1 November , 2014 , Pages 152-170 ; ISSN: 17428297 Ghorbanian, K ; Karimi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Possible performance enhancement of small gas turbine power plants through the application of thermoacoustic systems is examined. The thermoacoustic subsystem is powered only by the waste heat of the gas turbine. Two different gas turbine configurations are considered: a Thermoacoustic refrigerator assisted gas turbine (TRG) and a Combined thermoacoustic heat pump and refrigeration assisted gas turbine (CTHRG). Exergy, rational efficiency and relative power gain (RPG) of these configurations are compared with those from the recuperated gas turbine engine. The results indicate that the integration of thermoacoustic system to a simple gas turbine cycle will not only enhance the energy/exergy...

    , Article Energy and Environment ; Vol. 25, issue. 8 , 2014 , p. 1381-1404 Abdalisousan, A ; Fani, M ; Farhanieh, B ; Abbaspour, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In advanced combined-cycle power plants, significant improvements in the thermodynamic performance are mainly achieved by the development of more efficient gas-turbine systems. This paper evaluates the effect of selected decision variables in the steam system for optimization of Thermal Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (TCCGT) power plant using an iterative exergoeconomic. The design variables were the thermodynamic parameters that establish the configuration both of the steam and gas systems. The design data of an existing plant (Damavand power plant in Tehran-Iran) is used. Two different objective functions are proposed: one minimizes the total cost of production per unit of output, and the...

    Abstract
In this paper sustainability analysis (exergy, environmental and economic) and multi-objective optimization for an aromatic plant are provided and interactions between decision variables are discussed. Environmental evaluation shows that the cancer human toxicity and global warming are the most important environmental concerns and the weight of EIs (environmental impacts) are mainly due to process wastes. The optimizations results demonstrate parameters like reactor temperature have a wide range in the optimizations while some variables, such as extraction unit variables have the same value. Utility EI reduction occurred in economic and exergy optimizations rather than environmental...

    , Article Energy Conversion and Management ; Volume 67 , 2013 , Pages 197-207 ; 01968904 (ISSN) Vatani, A ; Khazaeli, A ; Roshandel, R ; Panjeshahi, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
This work deals with waste heat recovery from a proposed direct internal reforming molten carbonate fuel cell (DIR-MCFC), including an integrated pre-reformer. In this regard, some advantages are attainable over exhaust gas recycling. For instance, due to low temperature in the pre-reformer, carbon deposition and coke formation resulting from higher hydrocarbons can be eliminated. In this study, the cathode outlet provides the heat requirement for the pre-reforming process. After partial heat recovery from the cathode outlet, the stream still has a considerable energy and exergy (352.55 °C and 83.687 kW respectively). This study investigates waste heat recovery from the proposed DIR-MCFC,...

The effects of regenerative and CHP heat exchangers on power production, efficiencies, and production cost have been evaluated. The results show that a single regenerative heat exchanger lowers NOx, CO, and CO 2 emissions by 15%, 40%, and 0.4%, respectively, and decreases the electricity production cost by nearly 18%. A single CHP heat exchanger has little influence on...

Social cost of air pollution is based on the negative effects of air pollution on the health of society and environment. The economic aspect of these effects is called external social cost of air pollution. Other pollution sources...

    Abstract
Airlift Systems (ALS) are widely used in various industrial applications. As the main part of the flow through ALS's upriser pipe, is formed by gas-liquid flow, the analysis of such systems will be accompanied by problems of two-phase flow modelling. Several effective variables are involved in ALS; thereupon comprehensive method is needed to consider these parameters. Exergy analysis can be considered as a simple solution for the realisation of the preferred domain of ALS's operation. Here, this method has been proposed to examine the performance of ALS. Based on thermodynamic principles, an analytical model has been implemented in each phase and the respective experimental data have been...

This mathematical model is optimized by Genetic algorithm (GA). Because of the nonlinear objective function and the constraint, GA is used as optimization algorithm. After applying GA, optimized parameters of cycle heat exchanger designing and its electricity consumption are calculated....

Simulation and Estimation of Power Generation in Natural Gas Network by Micro Turboexpanders

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hejazi, Bijan (Author) ; Farhadi, Fatolah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This thesis studies the economic feasibility of replacing a throttling valve with an expansion turbine in a city gate station for the purpose of distributed electricity generation through exergy recovery from pressurized natural gas. Conventionally, high pressure natural gas stream enters a pressure reduction station with its physical exergy completely destroyed in an irreversible Joule-Thompson effect of a throttling valve. To avoid hydrate formation at the outlet of the turboexpander, the inlet stream should be preheated. Although pressure reduction stations are inherently subject to seasonal fluctuations of inlet natural gas pressure and flow rate, the preheating temperature should be...
