    , Article 73rd European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers Conference and Exhibition 2011: Unconventional Resources and the Role of Technology. Incorporating SPE EUROPEC 2011 ; Vol. 4, issue , 2011 , p. 2461-2466 Saidian, M ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Masihi, M ; Kharrat, R ; Kianinejad, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this study a new iterative algorithm is developed to evaluate dispersivity in fracture and matrix, distinctly. The novelty of proposed algorithm is using mathematical model of solute transport in fractured porous media coupled with experimental data iteratively. A fractured glass micromodel has been designed to visualize the interaction between fracture and matrix during displacement of n-Decane by n-Octane at constant rate. The similarity between numerical and experimental model has been enhanced by reducing the assumptions which were applied in previous related studies. The iteration is performed on velocity components of solute transport and longitudinal as well as transversal...

Experimental investigation of matrix wettability effects on water imbibition in fractured artificial porous media

    , Article Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering ; Volume 86-87 , 2012 , Pages 165-171 ; 09204105 (ISSN) Rezaveisi, M ; Ayatollahi, S ; Rostami, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Spontaneous water imbibition into the matrix blocks is known as the main mechanism for increased oil recovery from naturally fractured oil reservoirs. The rate of oil recovery and its ultimate value is mostly affected by wettability of the rocks and their pore structure. Oil viscosity also greatly influences the rate of oil recovery. A novel experimental model was utilized to study the imbibition mechanism under different wettability conditions. Matrix blocks made from different grain types and size distributions of glass beads were saturated with two different types of synthetic oil, to mimic the oil-saturated matrixes. The wetting characteristic of the models used in this study were...

A modal coupling procedure to improve residual modal effects based on experimentally generated data

    , Article Journal of Sound and Vibration ; Volume 331, Issue 1 , 2012 , Pages 66-80 ; 0022460X (ISSN) Hosseini Kordkheili, S. A ; Momeni Massouleh, S. H ; Kokabi, M. J ; Bahai, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
In this paper a modal coupling procedure is developed to improve residual modal effects based on experimentally generated data. While showing that CraigChangs proposed approximation function for higher frequency modes does not compare well with the exact function, a new procedure is developed in order to re-express the dynamic residuals. For this purpose, all frequency dependent terms of the Maclaurin series in CraigChangs proposed method are replaced by a general compatible function, which includes the neglected higher order terms. However, this function no longer appears in final equation of motion. Results from case studies for the discrete, continuous and experimental models are...

Discharge characteristics of a modified oblique side weir in subcritical flow

    , Article Flow Measurement and Instrumentation ; Volume 22, Issue 5 , October , 2011 , Pages 370-376 ; 09555986 (ISSN) Borghei, S. M ; Parvaneh, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
Side weirs are frequently used in many water projects. Due to their position with respect to the flow direction, side weirs are categorized as plain, oblique and labyrinth. One of the advantages of an oblique side weir is the increase in the effective length of the weir for overflowing and, therefore, diverting more discharge with the same channel opening, weir height and flow properties (i.e., upstream discharge, upstream Froude number and so on). In this paper, an experimental set-up of a new design of an oblique side weir with asymmetric geometry has been studied. The hydraulic behavior of this kind of oblique side weir, with a constant opening length, different weir heights and...

    Abstract
Gravity drainage is known to be one of the most effective methods for oil recovery in fractured reservoirs. In this study, both free fall and controlled gravity drainage processes were studied using a transparent fractured experimental model, followed by modelling using commercial CFD software. The governing equations were employed based on the Darcy and mass conservation laws and partial pressure formulation. Comprehensive examination was done on variables such as fluid saturation, velocity, and pressure distribution in the matrix and fracture, as well as fluid front level and production rate. Additionally, effects of the model parameters on the gravity drainage performance were...

    Abstract
There is ambiguity on the quantitative validity of the predictions revealed by musculoskeletal models for muscle forces. This study investigated the consistency between the predictions of a musculoskeletal model of the upper limb and the experimental data for a number of different subjects and functional tasks. Six normal subjects performed isokinetic eccentric or isotonic concentric contraction tests of the wrist muscles in well controlled conditions, using a robotic apparatus, and the net joint torque and angular velocities, as well as the surface electromyograms (EMG) signals of the muscles, were recorded. The experiments were then simulated using a parametric musculoskeletal model of...

Study of Surface Evaporation Currents Due to Wind-Induced in Aquatic Canopy Areaswith Floating Vegetation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Heshmati Far, Amir (Author) ; Jamali, Mirmosaddegh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The aquatic canopy areas such as wetlands play an important role in ecology of these area. The exchange flow between open water and vegetated area occurs due to sunlight and surface cooling. Wind also causes surface evaporation and create a cold layer at the surface of water. The creation of exchange flow and its magnitude depends on parameters like solid volume fraction and thermal gradient. In this thesis, the goal is to determine the effects of floating vegetation on the hydrodynamic characteristics of exchange flowas a result of surface cooling experimentally. In this research, the PIV method was used to measure velocity profiles. In the experiments, solid volume fraction, depth of...

    Abstract
The objective of this work is to design electrostatic actuators for a CMOS-MEMS nano-newton capacitive force sensor to suppress vertical vibrations disturbances. Electrostatic actuators are selected because the movable part of this force sensor is anchored to the fixed parts. In the first step, we propose a framework for simulation of the force sensor based on finite element method. The proposed model is modified utilizing comparison between the simulation and experimental models to improve the performance of the model. Then, 14 pairs of electrostatic actuators are designed for applying the control algorithm and their pull-in voltage is calculated. In next step, Modal Analysis is applied to...

Pressure loss in a horizontal two-phase slug flow

    , Article Journal of Fluids Engineering, Transactions of the ASME ; Volume 132, Issue 7 , 2010 , Pages 0713041-0713048 ; 00982202 (ISSN) Kabiri Samani, A. R ; Borghei, S. M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The study of air-water, two-phase flows in hydraulic structures such as pressurized flow tunnels, culverts, sewer pipes, junctions, and similar conduits is of great importance for design purposes. Air can be provided by vortices at water intakes, pumping stations, aerators, steep channels, etc. Under certain conditions, air may also be introduced into pressurized intake systems, which may form large bubbles in portions of the pipe. The bubbles may, in turn, cause an unstable slug flow, or other flow patterns, that leads to sever periodic transient pressure. In this paper, an experimental model (a circular and transparent pipeline, 90 mm in ID and 10 m in length) is used to predict pressure...

    Abstract
Electro-deposition process is one of the main steps in the LIGA procedure to fabricate microstructures. In this paper, one-dimensional modeling of Nickel electro-deposition process is implemented on Rayan and developed for simulation of time-dependence diffusion and migration of charge species with reduction reactions on the cathode surface. This model is proposed by considering governing equations on electro-kinetic phenomena consist of Nernst-Plank equation and Poisson's equation of electric potential. Transport of ions toward the cathode is considered based on the effect of convection, reaction rate, diffusion and migration. The numerical results cover two series of data consisting of...

A robust image registration method based on total variation regularization under complex illumination changes

    , Article Computer Methods and Programs in Biomedicine ; Volume 134 , 2016 , Pages 89-107 ; 01692607 (ISSN) Aghajani, K ; Manzuri, M. T ; Yousefpour, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Background and objective Image registration is one of the fundamental and essential tasks for medical imaging and remote sensing applications. One of the most common challenges in this area is the presence of complex spatially varying intensity distortion in the images. The widely used similarity metrics, such as MI (Mutual Information), CC (Correlation Coefficient), SSD (Sum of Square Difference), SAD (Sum of Absolute Difference) and CR (Correlation Ratio), are not robust against this kind of distortion because stationarity assumption and the pixel-wise independence cannot be obeyed and captured by these metrics. Methods In this paper, we propose a new intensity-based method for...

    Abstract
Background and objective: The human lungs exchange air with the external environment via the conducting airways. The application of an anatomically accurate model of the conducting airways can be helpful for simulating gas exchange and fluid distribution throughout the bronchial tree in the lung. Methods: In the current study, Lindenmayer system (L-system) has been formulated to generate the bronchial tree structure in a human lung. It has been considered that the structure of the bronchial tree is divided into two main segments: 1) The central airways (from the trachea to segmental bronchi) and 2) the dichotomous structure (from segmental bronchi to terminal bronchioles). Two sets of...

    Abstract
Refrigerators have considerable share of residential consumption. They can be, however, flexible loads because their operating time and consumption patterns can be changed to some extent. Accordingly, they can be selected as a target for the study of Demand Side Management plans. In this paper, two experimental models for a refrigerator are derived. In obtaining the first model, following assumptions are made: the ambient temperature of refrigerator is assumed to be constant and the refrigerator door is remained closed. However, in the second model the variation of ambient temperature and door-opening effects are considered according to some general patterns. Further, two strategies are...

    Abstract
This paper presents a comparison of analytical and experimental results of an investigation on the diagonally stiffened steel plate shear walls (SPWs). Experimental studies were carried out on three 1/3-scaled, one story single bay shear walls. The first specimen was a control specimen which was unstiffened and the other two specimens were diagonally stiffened using different stiffener configurations. Finite-element models of full SPWs are developed using finite element model. The results are compared with experimental results to investigate the influence of stiffeners on the behavior of the specimens. Good agreement between analytical and experimental models is found in point of failure...

Investigating Wind-Induced Currents in Sloped Aquatic Canopy Areas

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tohidi, Ali (Author) ; Jamali, Mirmosadegh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Aquatic canopy zones play an important role in maintenance of ecosystems. These areas are ubiquitous near rivers, lakes, lagoons, estuaries and shore lines. Governing dynamical systems through these areas have direct influence on, how nutrients and other vital materials for living things disperse. Also, they can control the amount of dissolved oxygen within the body of water in these regions. Nowadays, investigating the effects of vegetation grabbed the attention of many scientists and is a very important burgeoning field. In this study, the effects of surface cooling which resulting from mild wind blow have been investigated. In fact, two type of different currents form when wind blows...

Laboratory Investigation of Hydraulic & Constructional Effect of Sills on Dissipation of Energy in the Stepped Spillway

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sedaghatnezhad, Sara (Author) ; shamsaee, Abolfazl (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Chutes and stepped spillways are used to provide controlled release of flows and overflow in flood regimes from a dam into the downstream area. The main purpose of steps is to produce considerable energy dissipation along the chute and reduce the size of the required downstream energy dissipation basin. Many researches conducted on this matter and the effects of different factors like the height of steps, the number of steps, the different shapes of steps – mild step and end-sill step – influencing on energy dissipation have been studied. In this study, three different stepped spillway experimental models with different heights (5, 8 and 10 cm) and different number of steps developed, and...

Experimental Study of Two-Phase Slug Flow in Rectangular Tunnls with Adverse Slope

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Karimpour, Farid (Author) ; Borghei, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Slug Flow is one of the most important schemes of two-phase air/water flow, which is quite complex and quite different to a single-phase flow. Also one of the common water conveyance systems is a rectangular tunnel which may have adverse slope at some parts of the tunnel. In this study the hydraulic of slug flow in rectangular tunnels with variable slope from horizontal to adverse have been considered using experimental setup. About 150 tests were carried out for different air/water discharge ratios and adverse slopes, and dynamic pressure fluctuations together with the slug period were measured. It was observed that the pressure fluctuations increase as the air to water ratio increases and...

An Experimental Investigation of Three-Phase Flow of water-Oil-Gas Mixture Through Water-wet Sandstone

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Javanbakht, Leila (Author) ; Masihi, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Accurate prediction of relative permeability for various reservoir rocks at various saturation conditions has been of concern for a long time in petroleum industry. Relative permeability is known as one of the most significant parameters in simulation of actual multi-phase flow through porous media during life-time of a hydrocarbon reservoir. In addition, it plays important role in oil production and well completion. Direct experimental measurement in order to determine relative permeability of porous rock has long been recorded in petroleum related literature. However, empirical methods for determining relative permeability are becoming more widely used, particularly with the advent of...
