    Abstract
In the current study, thin-film nanocomposite membranes (TFN-Mx) based on a zwitterion-functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) have been developed for the forward osmosis (FO) salt-water separation process. The active polyamide layer was formed through the interfacial polymerization of the m-phenylenediamine aqueous phase (with or without the presence of MIL-125-NH-CC-Cys) and the trimesoyl chloride organic phase. In comparison with the results from the surface of the unmodified membrane, a nanofiller-incorporated TFN-M0.10 membrane represents a smoother and more wettable surface that collaborates synergically to enhance the membrane antifouling ability. Among the examined membranes,...

Symbiosis opportunities between food and energy system: The potential of manure-based biogas as heating source for greenhouse production

    , Article Journal of Industrial Ecology ; Volume 25, Issue 3 , 2021 , Pages 648-662 ; 10881980 (ISSN) Burg, V ; Golzar, F ; Bowman, G ; Hellweg, S ; Roshandel, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The concept of symbiosis, a mutually beneficial relationship, can be applied to food and energy systems. Greenhouse systems and biogas plants are interesting technologies for food–energy symbiosis, because both are usually based in rural areas and offer opportunities for the exchange of materials (e.g., biomass waste from the greenhouse as input to biogas plants) and energy (heat from biogas co-generation for heating greenhouses). In this paper, the focus lies on manure resources for biogas in Switzerland, because manure amounts are high and currently largely underused. We provide a spatial analysis of the availability of manure as feedstock to biogas plants and heat source for greenhouses....

    , Article Journal of Cleaner Production ; Volume 324 , 2021 ; 09596526 (ISSN) Khademi, M. H ; Lotfi Varnoosfaderani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2021
    Abstract
Currently, ammonia, as a clean and sustainable energy carrier, is intensively synthesized from its elements during the Haber-Bosch technology. This process requires a large amount of energy and emits numerous amounts of carbon dioxide, because hydrogen is dominantly produced from fossil fuels through reforming processes. Biomass-derived glycerol steam reforming is an attractive alternative to traditional reforming for reducing the dependence on hydrocarbon resources and mitigating climate change. This research aims to intensify a heat-integrated process for the co-production of ammonia and syngas from glycerol valorization. In this process, glycerol reforming continuously provides hydrogen...

    Abstract
Loess as a subcategory of collapsible soils is a well-known aeolian deposit generally characterized as a highly-porous medium with relatively low natural density and water content and a high percentage of fine-grained particles. Such collapsible soil sustains large stresses under a dry condition with natural water content. However, it can experience high and relatively sudden decreases in its volume once it reaches a certain water content under a certain load and therefore, the natural condition of the soil might not be suitable for construction if the possibility of the exposure of the soil to excessive water exists during the lifetime of the project. This research presents the utilization...

    Abstract
This in-water experimental study deals with the effects of the after-body on the FIV response of round and sharp edge cylinders. Different circular, square, diamond, and right-angle isosceles triangular cross-sections are investigated. The triangular cylinder is examined in four different symmetrical and unsymmetrical configurations with respect to the incident flow. The current towing tank experiments form a basis for the feasibility study of the isosceles triangular cylinders for FIV energy converters. The results indicate that the cylinders with a flat side perpendicular to the flow have a galloping type of response. In contrast, the cylinders with a sharp vertex pointing the flow show a...

Novel technique for robust optimal algorithmic cooling

    , Article Physical Review Letters ; Volume 122, Issue 22 , 2019 ; 00319007 (ISSN) Raeisi, S ; Kieferová, M ; Mosca, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Heat-bath algorithmic cooling provides algorithmic ways to improve the purity of quantum states. These techniques are complex iterative processes that change from each iteration to the next and this poses a significant challenge to implementing these algorithms. Here, we introduce a new technique that on a fundamental level, shows that it is possible to do algorithmic cooling and even reach the cooling limit without any knowledge of the state and using only a single fixed operation, and on a practical level, presents a more feasible and robust alternative for implementing heat-bath algorithmic cooling. We also show that our new technique converges to the asymptotic state of heat-bath...

Progress towards macroscopic spin and mechanical superposition via Rydberg interaction

    , Article Physical Review A ; Volume 98, Issue 4 , 2018 ; 24699926 (ISSN) Khazali, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    American Physical Society  2018
    Abstract
This paper is a proposal for the generation of a many-body entangled state in atomic and mechanical systems. Here the detailed feasibility study shows that application of a strong Rydberg dressing interaction and a fast bifurcation scheme in a Bose-Einstein condensate of Rb atoms, results in the formation of large cat states. By detailed study of the decoherence effects using the quantum jump Monte Carlo approach and taking into account the obstacles like collective decoherence and level mixing, this proposal predicts the formation of a 700-atom cat state. Subsequent transfer of the generated superposition to far separated mechanical oscillators is proposed, using dipole coupling between...

    Abstract
Low back pain is the most prevalent orthopedic disorder and the first main cause of poor working functionality in developed as wells as many developing countries. In Absence of noninvasive in vivo measurement approaches, biomechanical models are used to estimate mechanical loads on human joints during physical activities. To estimate joint loads via musculoskeletal models, the calculation of muscle forces are of importance. It is however difficult to estimate muscle forces as the number of muscles, i.e. unknown parameters, is far more than the existing degrees of freedom; the system is highly redundant. Therefore, in this study, instead of muscle forces estimation, their effects (i.e.,...
