    , Article Progress in Organic Coatings ; Volume 170 , 2022 ; 03009440 (ISSN) Pakzad, H ; Nouri Borujerdi, A ; Moosavi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2022
    Abstract
Devising effective methods to reduce drag forces is of great interest as these methods could prevent the wastage of fuel and decrease carbon emission and the global warming rate. Since the invention of Liquid-Infused Surfaces (LISs) in 2011, numerous investigations have been conducted to study their capability in various applications. Due to recirculation or drawing of the penetrated liquid within the surface structure, these surfaces acquire a slippiness property. The conducted investigations showed that these slippery surfaces have great potential for reducing drag forces, whether in a laminar or turbulent flow. In the present work, we first briefly elucidate common drag reduction methods,...

    , Article Marine Structures ; Volume 85 , 2022 ; 09518339 (ISSN) Tabatabaeian, M ; Khaloo, A ; Azizmohammadi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
Concrete-filled polyethylene (PE) tubes (CFPT) are composite systems using the polyethylene tubes as confinement for the marine structures in the splash zone to extend the service life of structures subjected to harsh environments. However, thermal cycles in marine environments can affect the behavior of such composite systems. This paper evaluates the effect of concrete infill strength (30 MPa and 60 MPa), the number of thermal cycles (50, 100, and 150 cycles) ranging from 25 °C to 60 °C, and thermal cycle type (type A and B) on the compressive and bond response of CFPTs. Characteristics of control and conditioned concrete infill, PE tubes, and CFPTs were obtained by means of compression...

    Abstract
Proteins possess a variety of nucleophiles, which can carry out different reactions in the functioning cells. Proteins endogenously and synthetically can be modified through their nucleophilic sites. The roles of these chemical modifications have not been completely revealed. These modifications can alter the protein folding process. Protein folding directly affects the function of proteins. If an error in protein folding occurs, it may cause protein malfunction leading to several neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. In this study, Hen Egg White Lysozyme (HEWL) and bovine insulin, as model proteins for studying the amyloid formation, were covalently attached with...

    Abstract
Achieving high efficiency and throughput in droplet-based mixing over a small characteristic length, such as microfluidic channels, is one of the crucial parameters in Lab-on-a-Chip (LOC) applications. One solution to achieve efficient mixing is to use active mixers in which an external power source is utilized to mix two fluids. One of these active methods is magnetic micromixers using ferrofluid. In this technique, magnetic nanoparticles are used to make one phase responsive to magnetic force, and then by applying a magnetic field, two fluid phases, one of which is magneto-responsive, will sufficiently mix. In this study, we investigated the effect of the magnetic field’s characteristics...

    Abstract
Currently, materials with outstanding absorption abilities, such as thin size, better absorbing power, and light weight are the need of industry to resolve the electromagnetic issues. However, the research on optimizing the composition of the material, microstructure and the structure of the absorber are also the important factors for enhancing the absorption features. A metamaterial microwave absorber (MMA) based on nano ferrites with desirable absorption peaks is proposed and simulated. Sol-gel auto combustion route is used to prepare the nanosized Sm doped Co ferrite with Co1+xSmxFe2-2xO4 at x = 0.00, 0.03, 0.06, 0.09, respectively. XRD, VSM, FESEM, and VNA were employed to evaluate the...

Flexible polymeric tail for micro robot drag reduction bioinspired by the nature microorganisms

    , Article Physics of Fluids ; Volume 34, Issue 11 , 2022 ; 10706631 (ISSN) Heyat Davoudian, S ; Javadi, K ; Sharif University of Technology
American Institute of Physics Inc  2022
    Abstract
In nature, most microorganisms have flexible micro/nanostructure tails, which help them create propulsion, reduce drag, or search for food. Previous studies investigated these flexible structures mostly from the propulsion creation perspective. However, the drag reduction and the underlying physical mechanisms of such tails are less known. This scientific gap is more significant when multi-polymeric/hierarchical structures are used. To fill the gap, we use the dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) method as a powerful fluid-polymer interaction technique to study the flexible tails' influences on drag reduction. Note that the flow regime for these microorganisms is in the range of laminar low...

Comparisons of lumbar spine loads and kinematics in healthy and non-specific low back pain individuals during unstable lifting activities

    , Article Journal of Biomechanics ; Volume 144 , 2022 ; 00219290 (ISSN) Heidari, E ; Arjmand, N ; Kahrizi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
Evaluation of spinal loads in patients with low back pain (LBP) is essential to prevent further lumbar disorders. Many studies have investigated the relationship between lifting task variables and lumbar spine loads during manual lifting activities. The nature of the external load (stable versus unstable loads) is an important variable that has received less attention. Therefore, the present study aimed to measure trunk kinematics and estimate compressive-shear loads on the lumbar spine under lifting a 120 N stable load and 120 ± 13.63 N sensual unstable load in 16 healthy and 16 non-specific LBP individuals during lifting activities. The maximal lumbar loads were estimated using a...

VulSlicer: Vulnerability detection through code slicing

    , Article Journal of Systems and Software ; Volume 193 , 2022 ; 01641212 (ISSN) Salimi, S ; Kharrazi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Inc  2022
    Abstract
There has been a multitude of techniques proposed for identifying vulnerabilities in software. Forcing a program into a vulnerable state has become increasingly unscalable, given the size of the programs and the number of possible execution states. At the same time, techniques that are looking for vulnerability signatures are marred with weak and incomplete signatures. This is not to say that such techniques have failed to identify previously unknown vulnerabilities in the code. However, they have inherent weaknesses, which result in identifying vulnerabilities that are limited in type and complexity. We propose a novel technique to extract succinct vulnerability-relevant statements...

    Self-induced backaction in optical waveguides

    , Article Optics Express ; Volume 30, Issue 24 , 2022 , Pages 42967-42981 ; 10944087 (ISSN) Abbassi, M. A ; Mehrany, K ; Sharif University of Technology
Optica Publishing Group (formerly OSA)  2022
    Abstract
In this paper, we study the backaction effect on the force exerted upon Rayleigh particles in guided structures. We show that the backaction becomes stronger as the group velocity of the guided modes is decreased, which is not unexpected since the fall of group velocity increases the interaction time between the particle and the electromagnetic field. Interestingly, the sign of the group velocity affects the pushing and pulling nature of the exerted electromagnetic force. We specifically investigate the case of a single mode optical waveguide both in the propagating and evanescent regimes, and show that the backaction enables us to enhance the ratio of the potential depth to the trapping...

Determination of the fracture parameters of concrete with improved wedge-splitting testing

    , Article Engineering Fracture Mechanics ; Volume 276 , 2022 ; 00137944 (ISSN) Sun, L ; Du, C ; Ghaemian, M ; Zhao, W ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
Considering the quasi-brittle mechanical properties of concrete, wedge-splitting tests are employed and improved in this paper to study the fracture behaviour of concrete. A novel wedge-splitting device is designed by fixing ten springs on the force transmission component. The adaptive spring force can be imposed on top of a concrete specimen to retard the brittle fracture process. With the proposed wedge-splitting test design for notched cuboid specimens, the complete load–strain/CMOD curves of concrete can be generated directly. The fracture toughness and the fracture energy can be calculated easily without numerical fitting using the double-K fracture model. The descending branch of the...

    Abstract
Fluid flow in porous media is affected by surface characteristics such as roughness and topography. In this work, to simulate the surface of natural porous structures in transparent interconnected media like micromodels, various degrees of roughness have been artificially created on flat glass substrates via different methods of laser ablation, cream etching, combination of laser ablation and cream etching, and hydrofluoric acid (HF) etching. The obtained surfaces by each method were characterized in detail via field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX/EDS), and surface profilometry. The impact of high...

    Abstract
In this study, a nonlinear observer for high-speed estimation of the sample surface topography in a small duration of the probe transient motion utilizing a 2DOF model of TR-AFM is proposed. Since the time duration to reach the steady-state periodic motion of the oscillating probe in conventional imaging methods is relatively high, the proposed nonlinear observer in this research is able to address this limitation and estimate the surface topography throughout transient oscillation of the microcantilever. With this aim, topography estimation process utilizing a Thau observer without any linearization of the system dynamics is designed and coupled with the system dynamics to achieve sample...

Adjacent segments biomechanics following lumbar fusion surgery: a musculoskeletal finite element model study

    , Article European Spine Journal ; Volume 31, Issue 7 , 2022 , Pages 1630-1639 ; 09406719 (ISSN) Ebrahimkhani, M ; Arjmand, N ; Shirazi-Adl, A ; Sharif University of Technology
Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH  2022
    Abstract
Purpose: This study exploits a novel musculoskeletal finite element (MS-FE) spine model to evaluate the post-fusion (L4–L5) alterations in adjacent segment kinetics. Methods: Unlike the existing MS models with idealized representation of spinal joints, this model predicts stress/strain distributions in all passive tissues while organically coupled to a MS model. This generic (in terms of musculature and material properties) model uses population-based in vivo vertebral sagittal rotations, gravity loads, and an optimization algorithm to calculate muscle forces. Simulations represent individuals with an intact L4–L5, a preoperative severely degenerated L4–L5 (by reducing the disc height by ~...

    Abstract
Co2+ and Cr3+-substituted SrBaCu2-xCoxCryFe28-yO46 X-type hexaferrite with x = y = 0, 0.1 to 0.5 (step = 0.1) were prepared through auto-combustion sol–gel method and sintered at 1250 °C for 5 h which was found from thermal analysis. The thermal investigation, phase detection, spectral, magnetic, and dielectric characteristics of the prepared composition were investigated by TGA, XRD, FTIR, VSM, and dielectric measurement. XRD patterns of the entire composition confirmed the development of a single phase of X-type structure. The enhancement in the lattice parameters and cell volume was observed by varying the Co–Cr concentration, attributed to the larger ionic radii substitution. FTIRspectra...

    Abstract
Polylactic acid (PLA) scaffolds produced by the fused deposition modeling (FDM) method have biocompatibility, close Young's modulus to that of bone, and the ability to make complex shapes. However, PLA has some drawbacks like brittleness, inappropriate mechanical strength and hydrophobicity, and a low degradation rate. In this study, polyethylene glycol (PEG) (5 and 10 wt%) by solving method and titanium (Ti) particles (5 wt%) by two different methods were mixed with PLA to address the mentioned problems. Extruded filaments were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and fourier transform infrared (FTIR). Surface morphology of the produced filaments...
