    Abstract
The electrocatalytic oxidation of hydrazine was studied over Ni, Cu, Co and Ni-based ternary alloy on graphite electrodes in alkaline solution. The catalysts were prepared by cycling the graphite electrode in solutions containing Ni, Cu and Co ions at cathodic potentials. The synergistic effects and the catalytic activity of the modified electrodes were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry (CA) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). It was found that, in the presence of hydrazine, the modified Ni-based ternary alloy electrode (G/NiCuCo) exhibited a good catalytic activity for the oxidation of hydrazine at a reduced overpotential and it has a significant high...

    Abstract
Abstract The role of the work function and Fermi level is significant in the performance of the photo-electrochemical cells. We report that a correlation exists between work function and thickness of deposited thin film metals (e.g., Zn, Pb, Co, and Cu). The potential difference between a metal and a reference electrode is used as a rough approach for investigation of work function or the Fermi level. Metal thickness was calculated using faradic current during electrodeposition and further investigated by X-ray diffraction technique. The results show that when thickness decreases the potential also decreases (becomes positive) and the Fermi level of metals electrodeposited on the indium tin...

    Abstract
Discharge characteristics of nanorods (NRs), microsized and nanosized copper (II) oxide (CuO) particles prepared via thermal decomposition and thermal oxidation routes are examined as cathode materials of a Zn/CuO cell without membrane separators. The electrochemical discharge is examined galvanostatically at a current density of 500 mAg−1 and reveals that the first discharge cycles of all the CuO materials contain one potential plateau; subsequent discharge cycles involve three potential plateaus. Each potential plateau is due to an electrochemical reaction. The first, second, and third potential plateaus are attributed to Cu2O3, CuO, and Cu2O discharges,...

    Abstract
MWCNTs/Ag/TiO2NTs plates were synthesized via electrochemical reduction of functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on Ag/TiO2NTs. The loading of silver nanoparticles was carried out by electroless reduction of Ag1+ onto TiO2 nanotubes previously formed by anodizing titanium. The SEM analysis revealed that MWCNTs were loaded significantly on the as-prepared Ag/TiO2NTs, where nanoparticles of Ag had grown on the walls of TiO2NTs. The photocatalytic activity of the synthesized plates was evaluated by the photodegradation of Methyl Orange (MO) dye under UV light irradiation. The results indicated that the MWCNTs/Ag/TiO2NTs demonstrated improved efficiency for MO photodegradation in...

    Abstract
The corrosion behavior of different grades of commercial aluminum such as AA1040, AA5083, AA6060 and AA7075 in ZnO-containing 4 M NaOH has been determined by using open circuit potential-time measurements (OCP), galvanostatic and potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive analysis of X-ray (EDAX) reveal that ZnO produces the inhibition effect by the formation of a zinc-containing deposit layer on the surface of aluminum electrodes. Although the influence of zincating on the performance of aluminum alloys and considering the amount of alloying elements such as zinc, magnesium and...

    Abstract
In this study, electronic structure, stability, and tendency to exchange electron of neutral, anionic, and cationic RhxCu4-x (x = 0-4) small clusters were investigated by density functional theory calculations. For neutral small clusters, it was found that the most stable structures of Rh4, Rh3Cu and Rh2Cu2 have distorted tetrahedral shape while the most stable structures of RhCu3 and Cu4 have quasi-planer shape. Adding charges to the clusters, caused shapes of the most stable structures undergo variations. Stabilities of the neutral, anionic, and cationic clusters decrease linearly with increasing the copper content. In addition, calculated chemical harnesses indicated that the small...

    , Article Ionics ; Volume 19, Issue 2 , May , 2013 , Pages 287-294 ; 09477047 (ISSN) Farsi, H ; Gobal, F ; Barzgari, Z ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Agglomerates of tungsten trioxide in the range of 90 nm to 1 μm are prepared by the acid precipitation method and characterized by XRD as well as scanning electron microscopy. The product when coated with platinum showed pseudocapacitance when in contact with acidic electrolyte in the potential range of 0. 1 to -0. 25 V/SCE. Capacitance in the range of 0. 014 to 0. 039 F cm-2 exhibiting moderate potential dependencies measured through both chronopotentiometry and impedance spectroscopy is presumed to be due to the insertion/de-insertion of protons into the lattice of tungsten trioxide. Equivalent circuit consisting of parallel simulators of mass transfer and capacitor charging...

Kinetic studies of glucose electrocatalytic oxidation on GC/Ni electrode

    , Article International Journal of Chemical Kinetics ; Volume 44, Issue 11 , 2012 , Pages 712-721 ; 05388066 (ISSN) Danaee, I ; Jafarian, M ; Forouzandeh, F ; Gobal, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Nickel-modified glassy carbon electrode (GC/Ni) prepared by galvanostatic deposition was used for the electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose in alkaline solutions where different electrochemical methods were employed. In cyclic voltammetry studies, in the presence of glucose an increase in the peak current of the oxidation of nickel hydroxide is followed by a decrease in the corresponding cathodic current. This suggests that the oxidation of glucose is being catalyzed through mediated electron transfer across the nickel hydroxide layer comprising nickel ions of various valence states. Under the chronoamperometric regime, the reaction followed a Cottrellian behavior and the diffusion...

    Abstract
Density functional theory is used in a spin-polarized plane wave pseudopotential implementation to investigate molecular oxygen adsorption and dissociation on graphite and nickel-doped graphite surfaces. Molecular oxygen physisorbs on graphite surface retaining its magnetic property. The calculated adsorption energy is consistent with the experimental value of 0.1eV. It is found that substituting a carbon atom of the graphite surface by a single doping nickel atom (2.8% content) makes the surface active for oxygen chemisorption. It is found that the molecular oxygen never adsorbs on doping nickel atom while it adsorbs and dissociates spontaneously into atomic oxygens on the carbon atoms...

    Abstract
Nickel modified NiOOH electrodes were used for the electrocatalytic oxidation of ethanol in alkaline solutions. The electro-oxidation of ethanol in a 1 mol/L NaOH solution at different concentrations of ethanol was studied by ac impedance spectroscopy. Electrooxidation of ethanol on Ni shows negative resistance on impedance plots. The impedance shows different patterns at different applied anodic potential. The influence of the electrode potential on impedance was studied and a quantitative explanation for the impedance of ethanol oxidation was given by means of a proposed mathematical model. At potentials higher than 0.52 V(vs. Ag/AgCl), a pseudoinductive behavior was observed, but at those...

Adsorption and dissociation of hydrogen peroxide on small Pd xM3-x (M = Pt, Cu; X = 1-3) clusters: A hybrid density functional study

    , Article Molecular Physics ; Volume 109, Issue 14 , May , 2011 , Pages 1797-1804 ; 00268976 (ISSN) Nahali, M ; Gobal, F ; Arab, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
The adsorption and dissociation of H2O2 on small PdxM3-x (M=Pt, Cu; x = 1-3) clusters is investigated using the B3PW91 hybrid density functional method. Natural bond orbitals are analysed to obtain partial charges on atoms, dipole moments, bond orders, and hybrid orbitals of the PdxM3-x-H2O2 systems. The calculated adsorption energies are in the range of -0.32 to -2.12 eV. Generally, H2O2 adsorbs on top positions through one of its oxygen atoms and only in a few cases reacts with the cluster through both oxygen and hydrogen sides. In the latter case the cluster sites which are negatively charged interact with the hydrogen atoms. Interestingly, on the triplet Pd2Pt cluster, H2O2 dissociates...

    , Article Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry ; Volume 652, Issue 1-2 , 2011 , Pages 8-12 ; 15726657 (ISSN) Jafarian, M ; Babaee, M ; Gobal, F ; Mahjani, M. G ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
Electro-oxidation of alcohols (methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol and 2-propanol) on nickel dispersed into a thick layer of poly-o-aminophenol on graphite electrode (GE/POAP-SDS/Ni) was investigated. Ni-doping into the polymeric film was achieved chemically followed by enrichment of Ni(III) through cycling the potential. The electro-oxidation of alcohols on GE/POAP-SDS/Ni were found to be dominated by direct electro-oxidation with some contribution from Ni(II)/Ni(III) couple. Rate constants for the electro-oxidation of methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol and 2-propanol as derived by chronoamperometry were 1.65 × 105, 1.31 × 105, 2.53 × 104 and 1.40 × 104 cm3 mol-1 s-1, respectively. Impedance...

    , Article Molecular Physics ; Volume 109, Issue 2 , 2011 , Pages 229-237 ; 00268976 (ISSN) Nahali, M ; Gobal, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
Theoretical study of nitrogen monoxide adsorption on small Six (x = 3-5) clusters has been carried out using the advanced hybrid meta-density functional method of Truhlar (MPW1B95). MG3 semi-diffuse basis sets were employed to improve the results. The geometry, adsorption energy, natural bond orbital charge, natural population analysis (NPA)-derived spin density and vibrational frequency of NO adsorption on all optimized nanoclusters were investigated. Also using the NPA, we have investigated the change of bond orders through adsorption. It has been found that NO is capable of making n-centre bonds (n = 1-4) from the nitrogen side but bonds to one site from the oxygen end. In the later case...

    , Article Cuihua Xuebao/Chinese Journal of Catalysis ; Volume 31, Issue 11 , 2010 , Pages 1351-1357 ; 02539837 (ISSN) Jafarian, M ; Rashvand Avei, M ; Danaee, I ; Gobal, F ; Mahjani, M. G ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
A stable copper (hydr)oxide-modified electrode was prepared in 0.5 mol/L NaOH solution by cyclic voltammetry in the range of -250 to 1000 mV. It can be used for electrochemical studies in the range of -250 to 1000 mV without interfering peaks because there is no oxidation of copper. During an anodic potential sweep, the electro-oxidation of saccharose on Cu occurred by the formation of CuIII and this reaction also occurred in the early stages of the reversed cycle until it is stopped by the negative potentials. A mechanism based on the electro-chemical generation of CuIII active sites and their subsequent consumption by saccharose was proposed, and the rate law and kinetic parameters were...

    Abstract
Impedance characteristics of the negative electrode of lead-acid battery were derived on the basis of fundamental interfacial processes occurring at the electrode. The solution of the governing equations was presented in terms of a simple equivalent circuit consisting of resistive and capacitive loops in which charge transfer and sulfate layer formation and also mass transfer (Warburg) elements are considered. The kinetic parameters were deduced by fitting the theoretically derived impedance to the experimental data. Impedance at various States of Charge (SoC) was also examined
