Studying Site Effects Through Seismic Signal Processing

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Morovati, Vahid (Author) ; Ghannad, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Earthquakes are one of the greatest natural hazards. Hazard mitigation requires studies in many areas including geotechnical aspects of earthquake engineering. Characteristics of seismic waves change significantly as they pass through soft soil layers near the earth's surface. This phenomenon, commonly known as site effects or site response, is a major factor influencing the extent of damage on structures. Processing of seismic data recorded during earthquakes is one of the most reliable methods to study site effects. The ground motions generated during earthquakes are nonstationary with respect to both amplitude and frequency. The state-of-the-art time-frequency distributions when applied...

Risk-Based Seismic Design of Buildings in the Context of Cities, with Rigorous Uncertainty Modeling, and Proposing Efficient Computational Methods

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Ghods, Babak (Author) ; Rahimzadeh Rofooei, Fayaz (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The main goal of the current building design codes is to protect life safety, and generally, they do not directly address other societal, economic, etc., concerns regarding earthquakes. However, recent earthquakes around the world have shown that the effects of earthquakes' damages and losses can go beyond life-safety concerns. This observation has led many renowned scholars, organizations, and agencies to state the need to change the current design codes. In this regard, this thesis investigates the basis of setting the seismic design requirements and suggests a method in this respect. The study consists of two main parts. Part I (theory and design methodology) discusses some theoretical...

System Identification of Soil-Structure Systems through Seismic Signal Processing

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Ghahhari, Farid (Author) ; Ghannad, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Dynamic characteristics of structures—viz., natural frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes—are central to earthquake resistant design (model validation) and health monitoring. For civil structures like buildings and bridges, these characteristics can be highly influenced by surrounding soil in addition to the super-structure’s properties and cannot be correctly estimated using numerical modeling. For example, soil’s flexibility decreases the natural frequencies of the system; and in most cases, soil provides additional damping due to material hysteresis and radiation. On account of this fact, system identification techniques must be applied to extract such information from field data,...

Simulation of the Near-Field Earthquake Records without Velocity Pulse Using Stochastic Approach

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Waezi, Zakariya (Author) ; Rahimzadeh Rofouei, Fayyaz (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The necessity of providing synthetic acceleration records suitable for seismic assessment of the structures in the regions whose seismological history has not enough instrumental recordings has become one of the main concerns of the earthquake engineers. Despite being accurate in estimating earthquake ground motion, physics-based methods involve complicated procedures and need the detailed information about source, path and the site conditions of the scenario event which is not available for lots of engineering problems. The main goal of this dissertation is to introduce a novel stochastic method for the simulation of the non-stationary earthquake acceleration records compatible enough with...

Providing Design Spectrum for Iran Based on the New Generation of Ground Motion Model

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hajipour, Alireza (Author) ; Alijani Moghaddam, Hassan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to the inelasticity of the ground and geometric expansion, seismic waves are reduced by moving away from the center of wave propagation, which is called the attenuation of seismic waves. Therefore, the ground motions that occur at the site of the structures are different from the ground motions that are emitted from the source. The upcoming study investigates the attenuation of seismic waves in the geographical area of Iran based on the accelerogram data of Iran. Considering the consecutive occurrence of moderate to large earthquakes in Iran, the development of Iran's accelerography network, and the need to update the attenuation relationships by considering the parameters effective in...

Evaluation of Demand Modifier Factor ,M, in FEMA356 for Concrete Structures Under Near-Field Earthquakes

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohhamad Rahimi, Majid (Author) ; Rahimzadeh Rofooei, Fayyaz (Supervisor)
    Abstract
On the average, ten thousand people die annually due to earthquakes. A UNESCO study gives damage losses amounting to ten billion dollars within the years 1926 to 1950 from earthquakes. These data shows the importance of earthquake issue that causes the scientists to pay special attention to this subject. In despite of significant improvements in many of scientific fields, earthquake is still remains as an unknown event without the possibility of predicting its time and location of occurrence. Because of that, a large effort has been paid for rehabilitation of structures to prevent the human loss and maintaining the necessary life safety. In this regard, various guidelines have been proposed...

Evalution of Demand Modifier Factor "M" in FEMA 356 for Steel Structures Under Far-Field Earthquakes

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bagheri Karimi, Sara (Author) ; Rahimzadeh Rofooei, Fayyaz (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Continuous improvement of the existing seismic design codes and regulations clearly shows the need for evaluation and probable retrofitting of the existing building structures. A large amount of literature has been produced on different topics related to retrofitting including FEMA 273, ATC 40, FEMA356 and most recently the draft of FEMA 440. On the other hand, it has been long recognized that the response of buildings to strong ground shaking caused by earthquakes results in inelastic behavior. Until recently, most structural analysis techniques devised for practical application relied on linear procedures to predict the seismic response of the building structures. But due to various...

Using the fluid/structure interaction to mitigate the seismic response of structures equiped with cylindrical liquid tanks subjected to near field earthquakes

    , Article 11th East Asia-Pacific Conference on Structural Engineering and Construction, EASEC-11, Taipei, 19 November 2008 through 21 November 2008 ; 2008 Attari, N. K. A ; Rofooei, F. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
Seismic response of a Single Degree of Freedom (SDOF) system containing a rigid circular cylindrical liquid tank under the earthquake excitations is considered in the presence of fluid/structure interaction. The governing differential equations of the system is derived considering the first three liquid sloshing modes (1, 1), (0, 1) and (2, 1) under different strong ground motions. The dynamic response of the system is investigated in the neighborhood of 1:1 and 1:2 internal resonances between the SDOF system and the liquid sloshing modes. These internal resonances take place by tuning the frequency of the first asymmetric sloshing mode of the liquid to the fundamental frequency of the SDOF...

Uniform hazard response spectra and ground motions for tabriz

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 16, Issue 3 , 2009 , Pages 238-248 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Moghaddam, H ; Fanaie, N ; Hamzehloo, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Tabriz has experienced several large destructive historical earthquakes in the past. Due to the absence of ground motion records in this area, a simulation of future events based on a regional seismicity information and ground motion model is necessary. Based on a maximum likelihood method, earthquake magnitude is estimated for a 10% probability of exceedance within 50 years (475-year return period) and its corresponding strong ground motions have been simulated using stochastic finite fault modeling. Using different stress parameters, suites of ground motions have been simulated for a return period of £75 years and their spectral accelerations have been compared with the corresponding...

    , Article Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering ; Volume 39 , August , 2012 , Pages 61-77 ; 02677261 (ISSN) Ebrahimian, H ; Azarbakht, A ; Tabandeh, A ; Akbar Golafshani, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2012
    Abstract
The exact and two approximate conditional spectra are compared in this manuscript as a target spectrum for the purpose of ground motion selection. The considered site is a real offshore site located at South Pars Gas Field in the Persian Gulf region. This case study site is influenced by four major seismic area sources in which the deaggregation results confirm that many comparable seismic scenarios can be taken into account. Therefore, an alternative to the conventional approximate conditional spectrum is proposed that has a small deviation from the exact solution. In addition, the use of different conditioning status of the probabilistic seismic hazard deaggregation (i.e., occurrence...

The effect of soil–structure interaction on the seismic risk to buildings

    , Article Bulletin of Earthquake Engineering ; Volume 16, Issue 9 , 2018 , Pages 3653-3673 ; 1570761X (ISSN) Khosravikia, F ; Mahsuli, M ; Ghannad, M. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer Netherlands  2018
    Abstract
This paper studies the effect of soil–structure interaction (SSI) on the seismic risk estimates of buildings. Risk, in this context, denotes the probability distribution of seismic monetary loss due to structural and nonstructural damage. The risk analysis here uncovers the probability that SSI is beneficial, detrimental, or uninfluential on seismic losses. The analyses are conducted for a wide range of buildings with different structural systems, numbers of stories, and foundation sizes on various soil types. A probabilistic approach is employed to account for prevailing sources of uncertainty, i.e., those in ground motion and in the properties of the soil–structure system. In this...

The effect of soil-structure interaction on damage index of buildings

    , Article Engineering Structures ; Volume 30, Issue 6 , 2008 , Pages 1491-1499 ; 01410296 (ISSN) Nakhaei, M ; Ali Ghannad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
The effect of Soil-Structure Interaction (SSI) on Park and Ang Damage Index in a Bilinear-SDOF model is investigated under seismic loading. This is done through an extensive parametric study. Two non-dimensional parameters are used as the key parameters which control the severity of SSI: (1) a non-dimensional frequency as the structure-to-soil stiffness ratio index and (2) the aspect ratio of the structure. The soil beneath the structure is considered as a homogeneous elastic half space and is modeled using the concept of Cone Models. The system is then subjected to three different earthquake ground motions as the representative motions recorded on different soil conditions. The analysis is...

    , Article SN Applied Sciences ; Volume 3, Issue 3 , 2021 ; 25233971 (ISSN) Pouya, M. R ; Sohrabi Gilani, M ; Ghaemian, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer Nature  2021
    Abstract
Recorded ground accelerations at various locations of Karun III Dam during November 20, 2007, were recorded by an array of accelerometers located on the dam. In terms of amplitude and phase, these accelerations show non-uniformities in different elevations. In this paper, the effect of these non-uniform ground motions on the seismic response of the dam taking dam-reservoir-foundation interaction into account is investigated. The EACD-3D-2008 finite element program and ABAQUS Software are used for carrying out the seismic analyses. For this purpose, time histories of the earthquake accelerations are interpolated at nodal points located on the dam foundation interface. The analysis has been...

Surrogate SDOF models for probabilistic performance assessment of multistory buildings: Methodology and application for steel special moment frames

    , Article Engineering Structures ; Volume 212 , 2020 Vaseghiamiri, S ; Mahsuli, M ; Ghannad, M. A ; Zareian, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
This paper proposes a methodology for generating surrogate single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) models that can be utilized to estimate the probability distribution of the roof drift ratio of multistory buildings at various ground motion intensity measures. The use of an SDOF model as a surrogate for multistory buildings can significantly alleviate the high computational cost for probabilistic seismic demand assessment considering both model uncertainty and record-to-record variability. The surrogate SDOF model generated herein explicitly accounts for model uncertainties and can be used as an alternative to the nonlinear dynamic analysis of detailed building structures. Applications for such...

Study on elastic response of structures to near-fault ground motions through record decomposition

    , Article Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering ; Volume 30, Issue 7 , Jan , 2010 , Pages 536-546 ; 02677261 (ISSN) Ghahari, S. F ; Jahankhah, H ; Ali Ghannad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Accelerograms recorded near active faults have some important characteristics that make them different from those recorded in far-fault regions. High-frequency components in acceleration records and long-period velocity pulses are among notable specifications of such ground motions. In this paper, a moving average filtering with appropriate cut-off frequency has been used to decompose the near-fault ground motions into two components having different frequency contents: first, Pulse-Type Record (PTR) that possesses long-period pulses; second, the relatively high-frequency BackGround Record (BGR), which does not include large velocity pulses. Comparing the results with those extracted through...

Stochastic non-stationary model for ground motion simulation based on higher-order crossing of linear time variant systems

    , Article Journal of Earthquake Engineering ; Volume 21, Issue 1 , 2017 , Pages 123-150 ; 13632469 (ISSN) Waezi, Z ; Rofooei, F. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This article introduces a new time-varying model to generate synthetic non-stationary acceleration records using the modified Kanaii-Tajimi model with time-variant parameters. The proposed method can capture two different dominant frequencies per time which makes it suitable for synthesizing the near-field no-pulse earthquake records. A number of closed-form relationships are developed to describe the frequency dependent time-domain level crossings of the simulated records under white noise excitation. The model parameters are optimized using the crossing and Arias intensity properties of the synthetic and target records. The efficiency of the proposed model is demonstrated using a data base...

    Abstract
In the special zones of frame elements, which are used for seismic energy dissipation, inelastic interaction among the internal forces needs to be considered more precisely. This paper describes a special element called a VM link element for modeling the shear-flexural interaction in the inelastic zones of beam elements. The element may be used in the any inelastic location of frames subjected to the monotonic or cyclic loadings. The inelastic shear and flexural deformations are considered by using the multi-surfaces plasticity concept with dissimilar yield surfaces. A new kinematic hardening and new non-associated flow rules are introduced for definition of the plastic deformations and...

Spatial variation input effects on seismic response of arch dams

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 19, Issue 4 , August , 2012 , Pages 997-1004 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Sohrabi Gilani, M ; Ghaemian, M
    Elsevier  2012
    Abstract
In the present paper, the seismic response of an arch dam subjected to spatial variation of ground motions along the interface with its foundations is investigated. Recorded ground accelerations at the dam foundation interface of an arch dam were used for the purpose of this investigation. Topographic amplification between various points of the interface was studied by obtaining ratios of the response spectral displacement and spectral pseudo acceleration. Time shift and amplification between stations show the nonuniform nature of ground motions for large structures like dams. Recorded ground accelerations were interpolated for different nodes of the finite element model. The seismic...
