    Abstract
The turbo-expander system is utilized instead of the pressure regulator to avoid exergy destruction occurring in gas pressure reduction systems. However, due to the variation of natural gas input conditions such as mass flow rate, the sustainable performance of this technology is challenging. In this study, at first, the optimal system design of gas pressure reducing station equipped with radial expansion turbine is performed. It is based on economic and exergy analyses as well as considering geometric, fluid, thermodynamic constraints of components and the systematic constraints. To do so, detailed design models of main components including mean-line design model of radial turbine,...

Aero-thermal redesign of a high pressure turbine nozzle guide vane

    , Article Propulsion and Power Research ; Volume 8, Issue 4 , 2019 , Pages 310-319 ; 2212540X (ISSN) Yavari, H ; Khavari, A ; Alizadeh, M ; Kashfi, B ; Khaledi, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The current article presents conceptual, preliminary and detailed aero-thermal redesign of a typical high pressure turbine nozzle guide vane. Design targets are lower coolant consumption, reduced manufacturing costs and improved durability. These goals are sought by 25% reduction in vane count number and lower number of airfoils per segment. Design challenges such as higher airfoil loading, associate aerodynamic losses and higher thermal loads are discussed. In order to maximize coolant flow reduction and avoid higher aerodynamic losses, airfoil Mach distribution is carefully controlled. There has been an effort to limit design changes so that the proven design features of the original vane...

Effect of different configurations on 3-D analysis of flow through stay vanes And guide vanes of a francis turbine

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 17, Issue 6 B , NOVEMBER-DECEMBER , 2010 , Pages 419-432 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Dadfar, R ; Firoozabadi, B ; Ahmadi, G ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Stay and guide vanes (distributor) are essential parts of a turbine. They are used to control the flow rate and to appropriately transfer the flow momentum to the runner. In this work, flow through the distributor is analyzed. For various Boundary Conditions (BC) and different configurations, threedimensional flows in the distributor of a Francis turbine are evaluated and compared with each other. The numerical simulations were carried out using Fluent software and the results were validated with a GAMM Francis turbine, where the geometry and detailed best efficiency measurements were publically available. In these simulations, the flow was assumed to be steady and the effect of turbulence...

Hydraulic behaviour of flow over an oblique weir

    , Article Journal of Hydraulic Research ; Volume 48, Issue 5 , 2010 , Pages 669-673 ; 00221686 (ISSN) Kabiri Samani, A ; Ansari, A ; Borghei, S. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
A comprehensive set of experiments was performed on weirs placed obliquely in a rectangular open channel. The main objectives were to investigate the effect of the weir angle relative to the approach flow direction on the behaviour and the hydraulic flow characteristics and to examine methods such as using upstream guide vanes and inclined aprons to increase the effective oblique weir length. Results indicate that by increasing the oblique angle, the effective length of the oblique weir increases significantly. Relationships are provided for the threshold submergence and the effective length of the oblique weir. Design recommendations are also presented for the use of guide vanes and...

Conceptual Design of a 1 MW Axial Flow Pump with Variable IGV

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shayestehzadeh, Mohammad (Author) ; Ghorbanian, Kaveh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Considering the multi-disciplinary aspects as well as the importance of a wide performance map of a propulsion system, this thesis is focused on the preliminary design aspects of an axial flow pump with an inlet guide vane. First, a one-dimensional design algorithm is developed. The code is used to perform a preliminary design of a prototype pump. The results are used to carry on a detailed 3D design by using commercial software. The obtained geometry and performance map are compared with available data. Finally, the finalized code is employed to design and analyze a one megawatt axial pump with and without inlet guide vanes

An Exp. Study of the Effect of Sweep on the Wake of a 2-D Wing

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yousefi, Ramin (Author) ; Soltani, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this experimental study, a series of wind tunnel tests were performed to examine the wake flow profile over three swept wings with sweep angles of 23, 33 and 40 degrees with similar aspect ratio at various conditions. The airfoil of wing was a NACA 6-series airfoil designed to provide a laminar flow on the front half of the airfoil. The tests, made at a mid aerodynamic chord Reynolds number of 8×〖10〗^5, covered an angle of attack range of -2 to 10 degree. The wing tip vortex effects are eliminated by placing an End-plate on the wing tip.The tests were carried out at two main section of wing and two various position from behind of wing. A total pressure rake and transducers was used to...

Hydraulic performance of labyrinth side weirs using vanes or piles

    , Article Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers: Water Management ; Volume 164, Issue 5 , 2011 , Pages 229-241 ; 17417589 (ISSN) Kabiri Samani, A ; Borghei, S. M ; Esmaili, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In the present study, methods for improving the hydraulic performance of labyrinth side weirs in a rectangular channel are reported based on model experimentation. For this purpose different arrangements and configurations of groups of guide vane plates and piles in the side weir flow field were tested. Experiments were conducted on labyrinth side weirs of different lengths and sill heights fitted in the test section of a rectangular glass-walled channel. Depths of flow were measured in both longitudinal and crosswise directions at regular intervals and their profiles were studied. It was found that the discharge coefficient of the labyrinth side weirs under these conditions gave...
