Salep-g-poly(sodium acrylate)/alumina as an environmental-sensitive biopolymer superabsorbent composite: Synthesis and investigation of its swelling behavior

    , Article Advances in Polymer Technology ; Volume 31, Issue 1 , 2012 , Pages 41-51 ; 07306679 (ISSN) Bardajee, G. R ; Pourjavadi, A ; Soleyman, R ; Ghavami, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A novel kind of a biopolymer-based superabsorbent composite, salep-g-poly(sodium acrylate)/alumina, was prepared from salep, sodium acrylate, and alumina by aqueous polymerization, using N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a cross-linker and ammonium persulfate (APS) as an initiator. The reaction parameters [i.e., acrylic acid (AA), MBA, APS amounts, and neutralization percentage of AA as well as alumina/salep weight ratio] affecting the water absorbency of the hydrogel composite were optimized using systematic method to achieve a composite with high swelling capacity as possible. The swelling behavior of optimum superabsorbent composite was measured in various pH solutions. In addition,...

CMC/celite superabsorbent composites: Effect of reaction variables on saline-absorbency under load

    , Article Iranian Polymer Journal (English Edition) ; Volume 19, Issue 8 , May , 2010 , Pages 571-579 ; 10261265 (ISSN) Pourjavadi, A ; Soleyman, R. A ; Ghasemzadeh, H ; Salimi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A series of superabsorbent composites were synthesized through graft copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA) onto carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) in the presence of celite powder using N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a cross-linking agent and ammonium persulphate (APS) as an initiator. The chemical structure and thermal properties of the composite hydrogels were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy and TGA methods, respectively. Morphology of the samples was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In free-state, the swelling conditions and hence the related data are not real, because in all their applications the swelling particles of superabsorbent must absorb aqueous solutions while...

Preparation and characterization of a composite biomaterial including starch micro/nano particles loaded chitosan gel

    , Article Carbohydrate Polymers ; Volume 174 , 2017 , Pages 633-645 ; 01448617 (ISSN) Dehghan Baniani, D ; Bagheri, R ; Solouk, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Thermosensitive Chitosan hydrogels which can be injected into defects with minimally invasive approach were prepared. Also starch micro/nano particles were synthesized via water-in-oil (W/O) miniemulsion technique. The starch particles were incorporated into the chitosan hydrogel to prepare injectable thermosensitive hydrogel composites. Tube inverting method, compression tests, swelling studies, XRD, SEM, OM, DLS, UV–vis spectroscopy were used for investigations. Results revealed that increasing crosslinker and surfactant contents and stirring rate leads to particle size reduction. Particle size was modeled using design of experiments (DOE) via the response surface method (RSM). Due to...

Taguchi optimized synthesis of collagen-g-poly(acrylic acid)/kaolin composite superabsorbent hydrogel

    , Article European Polymer Journal ; Volume 44, Issue 4 , 2008 , Pages 1209-1216 ; 00143057 (ISSN) Pourjavadi, A ; Ayyari, M ; Amini Fazl, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
A novel biopolymer-based hydrogel composite was synthesized through chemical crosslinking by graft copolymerization of partially neutralized acrylic acid onto the hydrolyzed collagen. The Taguchi method, a robust experimental design, was employed for the optimization of the synthesis based on the swelling capacity of the hydrogels. This method was applied for the experiments and standard L16 orthogonal array with five factors and four levels. In the synthesis of the composite superabsorbent, N,N′-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) as crosslinker, ammonium persulfate (APS) as initiator, acrylic acid (AA) as monomer, neutralization percent (NU), and collagen/kaolin weight ratio were used as...

    Abstract
Skeletal muscle tissue engineering aims to fabricate tissue constructs to replace or restore diseased or injured skeletal muscle tissues in the body. Several biomaterials and microscale technologies have been used in muscle tissue engineering. However, it is still challenging to mimic the function and structure of the native muscle tissues. Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting is a powerful tool to mimic the hierarchical structure of native tissues. Here, 3D bioprinting was used to fabricate tissue constructs using gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA)-alginate bioinks. Mechanical and rheological properties of GelMA-alginate hydrogels were characterized. C2C12 myoblasts at the density 8 × 106 cells/mL...

Carrageenan-g-poly(sodium acrylate)/kaolin superabsorbent hydrogel composites: Synthesis, characterisation and swelling behaviour

    , Article Polymers and Polymer Composites ; Volume 15, Issue 1 , 2007 , Pages 43-51 ; 09673911 (ISSN) Pourjavadi, A ; Hosseinzadeh, H ; Mahdavinia, G. R ; Zohuriaan Mehr, M. J ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A novel superabsorbent hydrogel composite based on kappa-carrageenan (κC) was prepared by graft copolymerisation of acrylic acid (AA) in the presence of kaolin using methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinking agent and ammonium persulfate (APS) as an initiator. The synthetic variables (i.e. AA, MBA and APS concentration, and the amount of kaolin) affecting the water absorbency of the resulting superabsorbent composite were studied. Evidence of grafting and kaolin interaction was obtained by comparing the FTIR spectra of the initial substrates and of the superabsorbent composite. A new absorption band at 1722 cm-1 in the composite spectrum confirmed the kaolin-organic polymer linkage....

Transport in droplet-hydrogel composites: response to external stimuli

    Abstract
Determination of effective transport properties of droplet-hydrogel composites is essential for various applications. The transport of ions through a droplet-hydrogel composite subjected to an electric field is theoretically studied as an initial step toward quantifying the effective transport properties of droplet-hydrogel composites. A three-phase electrokinetic model is used to derive the microscale characteristics of the polyelectrolyte hydrogel, and the droplet is considered an incompressible Newtonian fluid. The droplet-hydrogel interface is modeled as a surface, which encloses the interior fluid. The surface has the thickness of zero and the electrostatic potential ζ. Standard...

    Abstract
In this study, eggshell (ES) particles as an available and low-cost waste material were used for preparing hydrogel composites as dye biosorbents. For this purpose, hydrogel composites were prepared through free-radical graft copolymerization of wheat starch and sodium methacrylate (NaMA) in the presence of different contents of ES particles with various size ranges. FTIR spectroscopy confirmed graft copolymerization of NaMA moieties onto starch backbone besides the combination of ES particles with the starch-g-PNaMA matrix. The gel content values were high (>99%), which showed proper graft efficiency for hydrogel composites. Incorporation of ES particles into hydrogel matrix resulted in...
