    Abstract
In this study, a hydrophilic metal-organic framework (MOF) was applied to improve the performance of a cellulosic membrane for forward osmosis (FO) desalination application. The characterization results confirmed that the MOF particles existed within the matrix of the modified membrane. The MOF loading led to adjustment of the membranes in terms of overall porosity, pore inter-connectivity and hydrophilicity. These features caused an improvement in the pure water permeability (72%) and reduce the structural parameter of the modified membrane to 136 μm. The FO water flux of the modified membrane enhanced by about 180% compared to an unmodified membrane, without decreasing its selectivity. FO...

Amine modified magnetic polystyrene for extraction of drugs from urine samples

    , Article Journal of Chromatography A ; Volume 1602 , 2019 , Pages 107-116 ; 00219673 (ISSN) Zeinali, S ; Maleki, M ; Bagheri, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2019
    Abstract
Polystyrene is one of the best candidates as the extracting medium due to its high stability in different media and acceptable extraction capability. However, the hydrophobic nature and low wettability of polystyrene limits its application to non–polar analytes. To resolve this limitation, in this project, amine groups were chemically attached to the surface of magnetic polystyrene. The resulting hydrophilic magnetic particles were expected to be capable of extracting both polar and non–polar analytes. Non–steroidal anti–inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) were chosen for testing the applicability of modified magnetic polystyrene according to the importance of their analysis and also their wide...

    Abstract
The synthesis of a new drug delivery system based on hybrid nanomaterials containing a β-CD core and hyperbranched PG is described. Conjugating PG branches onto β-CD not only increases its water solubility but also affects its host/guest properties deeply. It can form molecular inclusion complexes with small hydrophobic guest molecules such as ferrocene or FITC with reasonable release. In addition, the achievable payloads are significantly higher as for carriers such as hyperbranched PGs. Short-term in vitro cytotoxicity and hemocompatibility tests on L929 cell lines show that the hybrid nanomaterial is highly biocompatible. Due to their outstanding properties, β-CD-g-PG hybrid nanomaterials...

    , Article Applied Surface Science ; Volume 257, Issue 23 , September , 2011 , Pages 9836-9839 ; 01694332 (ISSN) Yaghoubi, H ; Taghavinia, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
Surface of polycarbonate substrates were activated by atmospheric plasma torch using different gas pressure, distance from the substrates, velocity of the torch and number of treatments. The modifications were analyzed by contact angle measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and UV-vis spectrophotometry. Plasma treatment caused the surface characteristics to become more hydrophilic as measured by the water contact angle, which decreased from 88° to 18°. The decrease in contact angle was mainly due to oxidation of the surface groups, leading to formation of polar groups with hydrophilic property. XPS results showed an increase in the intensity of...

    , Article Surface and Coatings Technology ; Volume 401 , 2020 Yadi, M ; Esfahani, H ; Sheikhi, M ; Mohammadi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
In this study, the in-vitro bone regeneration ability of commercial pure titanium (CP-Ti) surface modified via electrospun polyvinylidene/hydroxyapatite (PVP/HA) masking and subsequent Nd-YAG pulsed laser treatment was investigated. The ratio of HA to PVP played a significant role in achieving a perfect homogenous mask on the CP-Ti. In the laser treatment process, the parameter of area scanning speed (ASS) had an important influence on the final surface morphology. A favorable range was defined for this parameter where these two conditions were satisfied: no PVP remaining and no severe substrate melting. Within a favorable range of ASS, as decreasing ASS exchanged the surface structure from...

    Abstract
As a low-cost method, hydrophilic SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) and fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) coarse particles were used as assistant materials to improve the fluidity of Al2O3 and TiO2 hard-to-fluidize nanopowders. To decrease the strong electrostatic forces between the hydrophilic nanopowders, prepared samples were fluidized in the presence of methanol vapor. Results revealed that the amount of SiO2 NPs, increased from 5 to 50 wt. %, has a beneficial effect on the fluidization quality of the binary (hard-to-fluidize NPs + SiO2) and ternary (hard-to-fluidize NPs + SiO2 + FCC) mixtures. However, the amount of FCC particles when it varied from 15 to 30 wt. % in the ternary mixtures should...

    Abstract
One of the basic challenges during drilling horizontal wellbores is the damage induced by invasion of mud filtrate into the formation. Addition of nanoparticles to drilling fluids has been recognized as a measure of control and reduction of filtrate invasion, which is the primary mechanism of the aforementioned formation damage. Despite notable advances in composing Nano-enhanced drilling fluids, the role of nanoparticle hydrophobicity on performance of the fluids has not been well studied. This study is based on a combined experimental-numerical methodology. In the experimental section, a procedure to find the optimum composition of Nano-enhanced water-based samples, containing...

    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
Anti-reflection and self-cleaning coatings on the glass substrate are used to improve the performance of solar systems. TiO2 are one of the most used semiconductors for this application. In this research meso-porous TiO2 coatings (that synthesized by the sol-gel process) with the various extent of porosity (using different concentrations of Pluronic F127, as pore-forming agent) have been investigated. The coating's thickness and porosity and anti-reflective properties were studied by FE-SEM and UV/VIS spectrometer (transmission spectra test), respectively. It was found that the use of F127 leads to the formation of pores smaller than 30 nm and increases the surface roughness from 1.5 (for...

Effect of electron irradiation on polypropylene films

    , Article Plasma Science and Technology ; Volume 13, Issue 2 , 2011 , Pages 194-196 ; 10090630 (ISSN) Shahidi, S ; Wiener, J ; Ghoranneviss, M ; Anvari, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Effects of both electron beam irradiation on the properties of polypropylene (PP) films and the irradiation on the different layers of a multilayer PP film are studied. A Fourier transform infrared spectroscope was used to investigate the chemical structure of the films. The results showed that the chemical properties of the first layer were improved, that is, more functional groups responsible for dye ability and hydrophilicity of the film were produced on its surface, while noticeable improvement was not detected on the surface of other layers. This was also confirmed by testing the dye ability of the layers. However, the results obtained by atomic force microscopy showed that the electron...

    Abstract
In this article, we have studied the properties (especially water repellency) of cotton coated by a thin layer of aluminum. The process has been performed in a low temperature plasma medium, using a magnetron sputtering device. We have also investigated the effect of different gases such as argon and oxygen as the discharge medium on the properties of the obtained samples. The results which are exposure time dependent show a good repellent property for 30 min of treating in argon medium under the condition of our experiment. However, when O2 is used in the system, the cotton property changes to become hydrophilic of which the factor decreases as we increase the time of treating. © 2006...
