    Abstract
A large number of offshore platforms of various types have been installed in deep or shallow waters throughout the world. These structures are mainly made of tubular members which are interconnected by using tubular joints. In tubular frames, joints may exhibit considerable flexibility in both elastic and plastic range of response. The resulting flexibility may have marked effects on the overall behavior of offshore platforms. This paper investigates the effects of joint flexibility on local and global behavior of tubular framed structures in linear range of response. A new joint flexibility element is developed on the basis of flexibility matrix and implemented in a finite-element program to...

Influence of material and geometrical parameters on stress field of composite plates with insert

    , Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part G: Journal of Aerospace Engineering ; Volume 226, Issue 12 , 2012 , Pages 1573-1582 ; 09544100 (ISSN) Mazraehshahi, H. T ; Zakeri, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Reduction of stress concentrations in the area of pin-loaded holes is one of the greatest challenges in the design of multilayered fibre-reinforced composite structures. Among many approaches to decrease concentration effects, putting metallic inserts in the holes is a convenient method. In this research, finite element analysis is applied to assess the effects of manufacturing parameters on stress concentration in the vicinity of the holes in composite plates with inserts. Edge and pitch distance, thickness and materials of insert, clearance between insert and composite part, and stiffness of the adhesive filling the gap are studied in this article. Investigations show that the optimum...

Extending the inverse receptance coupling method for prediction of tool-holder joint dynamics in milling

    , Article Journal of Manufacturing Processes ; Volume 14, Issue 3 , 2012 , Pages 199-207 ; 15266125 (ISSN) Rezaei, M. M ; Movahhedy, M. R ; Moradi, H ; Ahmadian, M. T ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2012
    Abstract
Recently, receptance coupling substructure analysis (RCSA) is used for stability prediction of machine tools through its dynamic response determination. A major challenge is the proper modelling of the substructures joints and determination of their parameters. In this paper, a new approach for predicting tool tip FRF is presented. First, inverse RCSA formulation is extended so that the holder FRFs can be identified directly through experimental modal tests. The great advantage of this formulation is its implementation in arbitrary point numbers along joint length. Therefore, in comparison with previous inverse RCSA approaches, a more realistic joint model can be considered. In addition, due...

Analysis and characterization of the role of NI interlayer in the friction welding of titanium and 304 austenitic stainless steel

    , Article Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A: Physical Metallurgy and Materials Science ; 2015 ; 10735623 (ISSN) Muralimohan, C. H ; Ashfaq, M ; Ashiri, R ; Muthupandi, V ; Sivaprasad, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer Boston  2015
    Abstract
Joining of commercially pure Ti to 304 stainless steel by fusion welding processes possesses problems due to the formation of brittle intermetallic compounds in the weld metal, which degrade the mechanical properties of the joints. Solid-state welding processes are contemplated to overcome these problems. However, intermetallic compounds are likely to form even in Ti-SS joints produced with solid-state welding processes such as friction welding process. Therefore, interlayers are employed to prevent the direct contact between two base metals and thereby mainly to suppress the formation of brittle Ti-Fe intermetallic compounds. In the present study, friction-welded joints between commercially...

On thermomechanical stress analysis of adhesively bonded composite joints in presence of an interfacial void

    , Article Composite Structures ; Volume 130 , October , 2015 , Pages 116-123 ; 02638223 (ISSN) Tahani, M ; Yousefsani, S. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2015
    Abstract
This paper deals with analytical thermomechanical stress analysis of adhesively bonded composite joints in presence of a structural imperfection in the form of an interfacial void within the adhesive layer based on the full layerwise theory (FLWT). The joints are subjected to mechanical tension, uniform temperature change, or steady-state heat conduction. The proposed adhesive joint is divided into three distinct regions along its length and a large number of mathematical plies through its thickness. Three sets of fully coupled governing equilibrium equations are derived employing the principle of minimum total potential energy. The three-dimensional nonlinear interlaminar stress...

    , Article Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance ; Volume 24, Issue 5 , May , 2015 , Pages 2158-2169 ; 10599495 (ISSN) Sarkari Khorrami, M ; Kokabi, A. H ; Movahedi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer New York LLC  2015
    Abstract
In this work, friction stir soldering (FSS) as a new approach for fabrication of copper/copper lap joints was introduced. This process is principally based on the friction stir processing (FSP) that can be performed using FSP tools with and without pin on the top sheet. In the present study, Pb-Sn foil was used as a solder which would be melted and then extruded in the area between the copper sheets during FSS process. This process was carried out using tools with and without pin at various rotation speeds of 1200, 1400, and 1600 rpm and traverse speed of 32 mm/min. Also, the same joint was fabricated using furnace soldering to compare the mechanical properties obtained with FSS and furnace...

    Abstract
Receptance coupling substructure analysis (RCSA) is extensively used to determine the dynamic response of milling tool at its tip for the purpose of prediction of machining stability. A major challenge in using this approach is the proper modelling of the joint between the substructures and determination of its parameters. In this paper, an inverse RCSA is developed for experimental extraction of tool-holder frequency response function (FRF) including joint parameters. The accuracy and efficiency of this method is evaluated through an analytical investigation. It is shown that the extracted holder FRF can provide a highly accurate prediction of the tool tip FRF. The developed method is used...

Probabilistic analysis of stress concentration factors in tubular KT-joints reinforced with internal ring stiffeners under in-plane bending loads

    , Article Thin-Walled Structures ; Volume 99 , 2016 , Pages 58-75 ; 02638231 (ISSN) Ahmadi, H ; Yeganeh, A ; Mohammadi, A. H ; Zavvar, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd
    Abstract
In the present research, results from the finite element (FE) stress analysis of 108 models, validated using test data obtained from the experimental investigation, was used to propose probability distribution models for stress concentration factors (SCFs) in internally ring-stiffened tubular KT-joints under four types of in-plane bending (IPB) loads. The SCF is one of the crucial parameters in the fatigue reliability analysis of tubular joints. It exhibits considerable scatter which calls for greater emphasis in accurate derivation of its governing probability function. According to the knowledge of the authors, no comprehensive research has been carried out on the probability distribution...

    Abstract
In this research, Araldite 2011 has been reinforced using different weight fractions of Reduced Graphene Oxide (RGO). Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) analyses were conducted and it has been shown that introduction of the RGO greatly changes the film morphology of the neat adhesive. Uni-axial tests were carried out to obtain the mechanical characteristics of the adhesive-RGO composites. It has been observed that introducing 0.5 wt% RGO enhances the ultimate tensile strength of the composites by 30%. In addition, single lap joints using neat adhesive and adhesive-RGO composites were fabricated to...

Dynamic forces at square and inclined rail joints: Field experiments

    , Article Journal of Transportation Engineering ; Volume 142, Issue 9 , 2016 ; 0733947X (ISSN) Ataei, S ; Mohammadzadeh, S ; Miri, A ; Sharif University of Technology
American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)  2016
    Abstract
Insulated rail joints (IRJs) are widely used in signaling and broken rail identification systems. Track deterioration adjacent to IRJ is frequent due to excessive dynamic forces generated at IRJs by the repetitive passage of the ongoing traffic. Hence, they exhibit low service life and are considered high-risk elements and maintained through high standards. With a view to increase operational speed and the annual operational throughput, many improved structural designs have been proposed, of which inclined IRJs are the focus of this paper. To compare noise, vibration, and adjacent sleepers' vertical displacement of square and 30° and 45° cut joints, a series of field tests have been carried...

Role of zinc layer in resistance spot welding of aluminium to steel

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 102 , 2016 , Pages 106-114 ; 02641275 (ISSN) Arghavani, M. R ; Movahedi, M ; Kokabi, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2016
    Abstract
Effects of zinc layer on microstructure and mechanical behavior of resistance spot welds of aluminum to galvanized (GS-Al joint) and low carbon steel (PS-Al joint) were explored. The results showed that although nugget 'volume' in PS-Al joint was larger, the nugget 'diameters' of PS-Al and GS-Al joints were almost the same in size since the melted zinc layer was pushed toward the outer regions of the nugget. Melting and evaporation of zinc coat led to reduction of Al-Fe intermetallic layer thickness. Presence of zinc also reduced the fixture-induced tensile stress. Utilizing carbon steel fixtures during welding caused a sensible vibration in the joint members. The vibration resulted in...

Behaviour of an innovative universal structural connection under monotonic and cyclic shear loading

    , Article Proceedings of the International Conference on Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering - OMAE, 31 May 2009 through 5 June 2009, Honolulu, HI ; Volume 2 , 2009 , Pages 765-775 ; 9780791843420 (ISBN) Khonsari, S ; England, G. L ; Mohammadi, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A new structural connection with special unique features was developed. While under bending it showed very high rotational capacity, in shear, unlike other existing connections, it also demonstrated a large shear deformation capacity. The ductile response of this connection stems from its innovative geometry as well as the ductility of the elements embedded in it. Since the previous shear tests on the specimens of this connection were carried out under 'unrestricted' conditions, the tests reported here were all under 'restricted' conditions. These shear tests consisted of 'monotonie' as well as 'cyclic' tests on mild steel specimens. Due to the restrictions imposed on the specimens during...

Relief of edge effects in bi-adhesive composite joints

    , Article Composites Part B: Engineering ; Volume 108 , 2017 , Pages 153-163 ; 13598368 (ISSN) Yousefsani, S. A ; Tahani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2017
    Abstract
Three-dimensional thermo-mechanical stress analysis of composite joints with bi-adhesive bonding is presented using the full layerwise theory. Based on three-dimensional elasticity theory, sets of fully coupled governing differential equations are derived using the principle of minimum total potential energy and are simultaneously solved using the state space approach. Results show that bi-adhesive bonding substantially relieves the edge effects. Moreover, series of parametric studies reveal the nonlinear effects of bonding length ratio and the relative stiffness and coefficient of thermal expansion of the mid- and side-adhesives. It is also concluded that the optimum design of a bi-adhesive...

Effect of reduced graphene oxide reinforcement on creep behavior of adhesively bonded joints

    , Article Mechanika ; Volume 23, Issue 5 , 2017 , Pages 646-652 ; 13921207 (ISSN) Marami, G ; Nazari, S. A ; Faghidian, S. A ; Vakili Tahami, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The creep behaviour of adhesively bonded joints is one of the major concerns in modern industry due to their application at relatively high temperature. In this re-search, the effect of added RGO on the creep behaviour of the Araldite 2011 adhesive is investigated. Uni-axial creep tests have been carried out on neat Araldite 2011 and RGO added adhesive at different stress and temperature levels. It has been shown that adhesive with RGO particles demonstrate higher creep resistance. Also, general time hardening models are developed for both materials and their constitutive coefficients have been determined using creep test data. Based on these models, the creep behavior of single lap joints...

    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
In the last decades, noticeable experimental and analytical investigations have been carried out on cast-in-place Reinforced Concrete column to Steel beam (RCS) connections, however rarely have been conducted on the precast RCS. In this paper, test results of four half-scale interior precast RCS connections with variable joint configurations are presented. The steel beams were connected to the precast column, using three specimens with extended face bearing plates and one with extended cover plates, embedded in the connection zone. The flanges of beams were strengthened with respect to scaled section, in order to increase the load transfer to the joint. All samples were loaded under reversed...

A semi-baseline damage identification approach for complex structures using energy ratio correction technique

    , Article Structural Control and Health Monitoring ; Volume 25, Issue 2 , February , 2018 ; 15452255 (ISSN) Alem, B ; Abedian, A ; Sharif University of Technology
John Wiley and Sons Ltd  2018
    Abstract
Because damage identification results based on the Lamb waves propagation approach can be influenced by varying environmental and operational conditions, development of a robust monitoring system with no need of the prior measured data of the structure has gained much attention recently. The instantaneous baseline damage detection technique is one of the promising methods that overcome the mentioned obstacles. For this, the material properties, electromechanical characteristics, and the geometric features must be identical. Also, sensor distances in similar paths and the geometric dimensions of the transducers must be the same. So, implementing the instantaneous baseline damage...

Predictive fault-tolerant control of an all-thruster satellite in 6-DOF motion via neural network model updating

    , Article Advances in Space Research ; Volume 61, Issue 6 , March , 2018 , Pages 1588-1599 ; 02731177 (ISSN) Tavakoli, M. M ; Assadian, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
The problem of controlling an all-thruster spacecraft in the coupled translational-rotational motion in presence of actuators fault and/or failure is investigated in this paper. the nonlinear model predictive control approach is used because of its ability to predict the future behavior of the system. The fault/failure of the thrusters changes the mapping between the commanded forces to the thrusters and actual force/torque generated by the thruster system. Thus, the basic six degree-of-freedom kinetic equations are separated from this mapping and a set of neural networks are trained off-line to learn the kinetic equations. Then, two neural networks are attached to these trained networks in...

Emergent statistical bubble localization in a Z2 lattice gauge theory

    American Physical Society  2019
    Abstract
We introduce a clean cluster spin chain coupled to fully interacting spinless fermions, forming an unconstrained Z2 lattice gauge theory (LGT), which possesses dynamical proximity effect controlled by the entanglement structure of the initial state. We expand the machinery of interaction-driven localization to the realm of LGTs such that for any starting product state, the matter fields exhibit emergent statistical bubble localization, which is driven solely by the cluster interaction, having no topologically trivial noninteracting counterpart, and thus is of a pure dynamical many-body effect. In this vein, our proposed setting provides possibly the minimal model dropping all the...

    Abstract
Block Slit Dampers (BSDs) are recently developed metallic yielding dampers for passive structural control. This type of damping devices can provide designers with an option of using highly ductile systems, such as steel special moment resisting frames (steel SMRFs), in important structures located in regions of high seismicity. The aim of this study is to obtain a performance-based seismic design (PBSD) procedure for these devices, and to assess the seismic performance levels of low-rise steel SMRF equipped with BSDs using the endurance time (ET) dynamic analysis method. For this purpose, first, the simplified behavioral model of these devices was established based on the analysis of...
