    Abstract
This paper presents a new framework for planning studies of modern distribution networks. Presence of electric vehicles (EVs) and various technologies of distributed generation (DG) technologies are considered in the studies as two upcoming events of the future systems. In this regard, place and capacity of DG units along with the reinforcement of distribution lines are determined running a multi-objective (MO) optimization algorithm. Total losses of the distribution network along with annualized cost of expansion plans including investment, operation and maintenance costs are introduced as the main criteria which should be optimized in the proposed framework. Abstract
Minimization of operating costs is one of the most important objectives of power system operators. To achieve this goal, several optimization problems such as unit commitment and optimal power flow have been introduced. Historically, in these problems, the transmission network has been considered as a static system, i.e., the ability of transmission lines switching is not modeled. On the other hand, it has been shown that transmission line switching can significantly reduce operating costs by the means of topology modification. However, considering this capability, a large number of binary variables are introduced in the objective function, and as a consequence, the computation time will be...

    Abstract
In this paper, a two-stage charging management framework is proposed to exploit the potential flexibility of Electric Vehicles (EVs). The aim is to reduce drastic variations in distribution system net load caused by integration of intermittent renewable distributed generation (DG) units. In the first stage, a home-based charging method is formulated in which the desired charging schedule of EVs is obtained by minimizing the cost of energy taking into account owners' preferences. The attained charging schedules are then announced to EVs Coordinator Agent (ECA) which, as the second stage, applies an LP optimization to reduce the cost of ramp provision. Moreover, an incentive scheme is...

    Abstract
Employing more flexibility in power systems is one of the main challenges brought about by integrating more renewable energy sources in power systems. A promising way to overcome this challenge is to have local sources of flexibility in distribution level. In this respect, a novel approach is introduced in this paper for multi-stage distribution system expansion planning which jointly considers expansion of the network assets as well as flexibility enhancement. To this end, construction and reinforcement of feeders and substations are considered as various alternatives for network expansion. Moreover, installation of conventional dispatchable distributed generation units is selected as the...

    Abstract
Long-term distribution network planning (DNP) is considered as one of the most challenging issues for distribution network operators (DNOs). By increasing EVs in cities, it has appeared some new players such as electric vehicles (EVs) owners and electric vehicle parking lots (EVPLs) owners for DNP. In this article, we conduct a new study on the coupled dynamic expansion problem of EVPLs placement and distribution networks. To reach this goal, at first, EVs driving and charging/discharging behavior as some influential factors is modeled using an efficient probabilistic algorithm. An analytical model is then introduced to estimate the number of EVs in EVPLs at different times. To find out the...

    Abstract
The rapid rise in the grid integration of low-carbon technologies, e.g. renewable energy sources (RESs) and plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs), has led to several challenges in distribution networks (DNs). This is due to the intermittent generation of RESs and uncertain loads of PEVs, both of which necessitate enhancing the flexibility requirements at the distribution level so as to accommodate the high penetration of these clean technologies in the future. To address such issues, this study proposes a mixed-integer linear programming-based expansion planning model for DNs considering the impact of high RES and PEV penetration, the associated uncertainties, and providing flexibility...

    Abstract
Increasing grid integration of intermittent renewable energy sources (RESs) and plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) with uncertain behaviours have necessitated enhancing the flexibility requirements of distribution networks. Thus, in the state-of-The-Art distribution network expansion planning (DNEP) models, both flexibility requirements and high penetration of RESs and PEVs should be taken into consideration. In this respect, a novel collaborative planning model for power distribution network (PDN) and plug-in Electric Vehicle Parking Lots (EVPLs) is proposed in this paper, which leverages sizing, siting, and operation of EVPLs to enhance the distribution network flexibility. Also, to model...

Incorporating flexibility requirements into distribution system expansion planning studies based on regulatory policies

    Abstract
Increasing penetration of renewable energy sources with intermittent generation calls for further flexibility requirements for efficient as well as the safe operation of power systems. Considering the significant growth of distributed energy resources in distribution systems, a promising approach to fulfill such requirements is to deploy local flexibility sources at the distribution level. Nonetheless, due to the monopoly nature of electricity distribution business, effective regulations are required to direct distribution companies toward fulfilling such goals. Accordingly, this paper aims at proposing various policies to motivate distribution companies to enhance the flexibility of their...

    Abstract
This paper proposes an approach to enhance the reliability regulation based on the relative performance. In the proposed approach, the distribution system feeders are clustered based on the parameters, which cannot be controlled by distribution companies. Afterward, a reliability incentive regulation is applied to each cluster so that the performance of each feeder is compared to its counterparts in the same cluster. The quality regulation is designed based on the reward-penalty mechanism, which penalizes feeders whose performance is worse than a benchmark and rewards those providing a performance higher than the benchmark. Then, the reward and penalty associated to the electric distribution...

Long-term planning of integrated local energy systems using deep learning algorithms

    Abstract
Optimal investment and operations of integrated local energy systems (ILESs) require medium to long-term prediction of energy consumption. To forecast load profiles, deep recurrent neural networks (DRNNs) are becoming increasingly useful due to their capability of learning uncertainty and high variability of load profiles. However, to explore and choose a DRNN model, out of conceivably numerous configurations, depends entirely on the performing task. In this regard, we tune and compare seven DRNN variants on the task of medium and long-term predictions for heating and electricity consumption. The ultimate DRNN model outperforms two state-of-the-art machine learning techniques, namely...

    Abstract
Optimal planning of residential complex energy systems requires thorough mathematical modelling to address the interconnections between all the energy installations from the largest ones, shared by all the residents, to the smallest ones in each distinct unit. Besides, conflicting desires of investors and residents in various aspects such as reliability index make this problem more challenging. In response, this paper presents a thorough framework to obtain the optimum design and operation of a residential complex energy system from scratch. To address the appropriate interconnection between various components of such an energy system, a multi-layer energy hub structure is proposed. Besides,...

    Abstract
This paper provides a general methodology for evaluating the reliability of microgrids embedding conventional and renewable energy sources (RESs), as well as energy storage systems (ESSs). The developed reliability assessment model is then leveraged to investigate the impact of different resource scheduling methods on the reliability. The technique applied in this article to assess microgrid reliability is based on the sequential Monte Carlo simulation. In this approach, the coincidence of faults is considered, aside from the annual generation pattern of RESs, i.e., wind and photovoltaic, and the network load profiles. For the sake of considering priority of the microgrid loads, two...
