, Article European Journal Of Operational Research ; Vol. 205, No. 1, pp. 98-105 Samarghandi, H. (Hamed) ; Eshghi, Kourosh ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The general goal of the facility layout problem is to arrange a given number of facilities to minimize the total cost associated with the known or projected interactions between them. One of the special classes of the facility layout problem is the Single Row Facility Layout Problem (SRFLP), which consists of finding an optimal linear placement of rectangular facilities with varying dimensions on a straight line. This paper first presents and proves a theorem to find the optimal solution of a special case of SRFLP. The results obtained by this theorem prove to be very useful in reducing the computational efforts when a new algorithm based on tabu search for the SRFLP is proposed in this...

, Article Journal of Intelligent and Fuzzy Systems, Published In: IOS Press ; Volume 19, Number 2, 2008 Eshghi, K. (Kourosh) ; Nematian, Javad ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, we will discuss two special classes of mathematical programming models with fuzzy random variables. In the first model, a linear programming problem with fuzzy decision variables and fuzzy random coefficients is introduced. Then an algorithm is developed to solve the model based on fuzzy optimization method and fuzzy ranking method. In the second model, a fuzzy random quadratic spanning tree problem is presented. Then the proposed problem is formulated and solved by using the scalar expected value of fuzzy random variables. Furthermore, illustrative numerical examples are also given to clarify the methods discussed in this paper

Optimum and suboptimum memoryless nonlinearities for the detection of ultrashort light pulses in gaussian noise [electronic resource]

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Communications ; 2009 Volume 57, Issue 12, December 2009, Article number 5351650, Pages 3561-3565 Farhang, M ; Salehi, J. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Detection of ultrashort light pulses with conventional bandlimited photodetectors can lead to substantial performance degradation in digital lightwave communication systems. All-optical nonlinear processing of the received field prior to the optical to electrical conversion can greatly overcome this problem. In this letter, through a decision-theoretic framework and using a basic invariance property of the photodetector, we obtain the optimal zero-memory nonlinear element and evaluate its performance. Possible suboptimum nonlinearities are also investigated and their performance is examined. The results in this letter strongly justify the intuitive use of power-law devices, such as those...

Solvent polarity and hydrogen bond effects on nucleophilic substitution reaction of 2-bromo-5-nitrothiophene with piperidine

    , Article International Journal of Chemical Kinetics ; Volume 43, Issue 4 , April , 2011 , pages 185–190 Harifi-Mood, A. R. (Ali Reza) ; Rahmati, M. (Masoud) ; Gholami, M . R. (Mohammad Reza) ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The reaction kinetics of 2-bromo-5-nitro thiophene with piperidine was studied in a solvent with a mixture of propan-2-ol with methanol and n-hexane at 25°C. The measured rate coefficients of the reaction demonstrated dramatic variations in propan-2-ol–n-hexane mixtures and mild variations in propan-2-ol–methanol system. The second-order rate coefficients of the reaction, kA, decreased sharply with n-hexane content. The multiparameter correlation of log kA versus molecular-microscopic solvent parameters shows interesting results in these solutions. Linear free energy relationship investigations confirm that polarity has a major effect on the reaction rate and hydrogen bond ability of the...

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Systems ; Vol. 29, issue. 6 , 2014 , p. 2636-2645 ; ISSN: 8858950 Parvania, M ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Shahidehpour, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper presents a hierarchical demand response (DR) bidding framework in the day-ahead energy markets which integrates customer DR preferences and characteristics in the ISO's market clearing process. In the proposed framework, load aggregators submit aggregated DR offers to the ISO which would centrally optimize final decisions on aggregators' DR contributions in wholesale markets. The hourly load reduction strategies include load shifting and curtailment and the use of onsite generation and energy storage systems. The ISO applies mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) to the solution of the proposed DR model in the day-ahead market clearing problem. The proposed model is implemented...

A new formulation for power system reliability assessment with AC constraints

    , Article International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems ; Vol. 56, issue , March , 2014 , p. 298-306 ; ISSN: 1420615 Safdarian, A ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Aminifar, F ; Lehtonen, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Recent investigations have revealed the significant role of reactive power in blackout events. The associated disturbances frequently emerge in the form of voltage instability and collapse. Due to the computational complexity of modeling and analysis of enormous contingencies, DC approximation of the power flow, without accounting the role of reactive power, is usually used to evaluate the contingencies and to mitigate the associated probable violations. This paper, at first, presents a linear power flow model based on an approximated version of AC power flow formulation. The proposed model is then used to develop an efficient reliability assessment approach which is capable of taking both...

Incorporating time-varying electricity rates into day-ahead distribution system operation

    , Article 2014 14th International Conference on Environment and Electrical Engineering, EEEIC 2014 - Conference Proceedings ; 2014 , p. 193-198 Ghasemifard, M.-H ; Abbaspour, A ; Parvania, M ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper proposes an operation framework for incorporating time-varying electricity rates into day-ahead distribution system operation. The day-ahead distribution system operation problem is formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model, in which profit of the distribution system operator (DSO) from serving local loads is maximized. The impact of time-varying electricity rates on local loads is determined based on the estimated price elasticity of the customers and the historical consumption data. The customers' consumption behaviors in the absence of time-varying electricity rates are captured in terms of the customer baseline load (CBL). The proposed model is applied to a...

Impacts of time-varying electricity rates on forward contract scheduling of DisCos

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Vol. 29, issue. 2 , 2014 , p. 733-741 ; ISSN: 8858977 Safdarian, A ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Lehtonen, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Time-varying electricity rates enable demand-side potentials, which provide an opportunity for distribution companies (DisCos) to hedge against the financial risk imposed by volatile spot market prices and uncertain customers' load. In particular, time-varying rates can be effective alternatives for at least a portion of costly forward contracts. This paper establishes a stochastic framework to determine optimal forward market purchases under time-varying rates. Various electricity rating strategies with different time intervals covering flat, time-of-use, and real-time pricing schemes are considered. The objective of the framework is to maximize DisCo's expected profit while the exposure...

    , Article IEEE Systems Journal ; Vol. 6, issue. 1 , 2012 , p. 35-45 ; ISSN: 19328184 Parvania, M ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Renewable energy resources, notably wind power, are expected to provide considerable portion of the world energy requirements in the near future. Many system operators around the world are challenged by the problems associated with integrating these intermittent resources into the grid. As one of the potential solutions, demand response (DR) is expected to play a major role for mitigating integration issues of intermittent renewable energy resources. In this context, this paper proposes a DR program which helps to integrate wind power by reshaping the load of the system. The DR program provides a framework to procure load reduction from DR resources in the wholesale energy market. The...

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Systems ; Vol. 27, issue. 3 , 2012 , p. 1354-1365 ; ISSN: 08858950 Abiri-Jahromi, A ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Parvania, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper addresses the midterm preventive maintenance outage scheduling problem of thermal generating units which is becoming increasingly important due to the aging of power generation fleet. In this context, a novel midterm preventive maintenance outage scheduler is proposed based on decision tree and mixed integer linear formation which explicitly considers the thermal units aging momentum in terms of failure rate. This allows the system operators to determine the thermal units' maintenance outage window based on the cost/benefit analysis of preventive maintenance tasks while optimizing the time interval between consecutive maintenance tasks. Additionally, the division of the year-long...

Mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) is utilized to model the problem. The proposed...

Incorporating service quality regulation in distribution system maintenance strategy

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Vol. 26, issue. 4 , 2011 , p. 2495-2504 ; ISSN: 08858977 Mohammadnezhad-Shourkaei, H ; Abiri-Jahromi, A ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The concerns of regulatory authority for the cost efficiency and service quality of distribution utilities has led them to implement monetary schemes, such as penalty/reward mechanism (PRM). PRM provides explicit financial incentives for distribution system operators (DSO) to maintain or improve their efficiency and quality of service. Although the effectiveness of the PRM is proven, analytical tools that can handle the complex decision-making process faced by decision makers to respond to PRM are scarce. This paper presents an approach for distribution system maintenance management in the presence of the PRM. The proposed approach tailors the maintenance plans by taking into account the...

Probabilistic worth assessment of distributed static series compensators

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Vol. 26, issue. 3 , 2011 , p. 1734-1743 ; ISSN: 08858977 Dorostkar-Ghamsari, M ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Aminifar, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The deployment of flexible ac transmission system (FACTS) devices, despite miscellaneous benefits and applications, has been restricted mainly due to their large investment costs. Accordingly, the notion of distributed FACTS (D-FACTS) was recently proposed. Distributed static series compensators (DSSCs), as a new member of D-FACTS, are directly clamped to conductors of transmission lines. The possibility of controlling the compensation rate of DSSCs from the control center affords the active control of network power flow. This paper presents a comprehensive reliability model for the DSSC. The model is then reduced and a state-space representation is extracted for a transmission line with a...

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Vol. 26, issue. 2 , 2011 , p. 841-849 ; ISSN: 08858977 Aminifar, F ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Shahidehpour, M ; Khodaei, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper presents an optimization model for the calculation of the minimum number of phasor measurement units (PMUs) in electrical power networks. The problem constraint is a predefined probability of observability associated with each bus. The mixed-integer programming is used for the proposed optimization and an efficient linearization technique is proposed to convert the nonlinear function representing the probability of observability into a set of linear expressions. The PMU placement is staged in a multi-year planning horizon due to financial and physical constraints. The average probability of observability is maximized at the intermediate planning stages, subject to a limited number...

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Systems ; Vol. 25, issue. 1 , 2010 , p. 516-523 ; ISSN: 8858950 Aminifar, F ; Khodaei, A ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Shahidehpour, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, a model for the optimal placement of contingency-constrained phasor measurement units (PMUs) in electric power networks is presented. The conventional complete observability of power networks is first formulated and then, different contingency conditions in power networks including measurement losses and line outages are added to the main model. The communication constraints which would limit the maximum number of measurements associated with each installed PMU is considered as measurement limitations. The relevant formulations are also proposed to make the model more comprehensive. The IEEE standard test systems are examined for the applicability of proposed model. The...

    , Article Proceedings - 20th Euromicro International Conference on Parallel, Distributed and Network-Based Processing, PDP 2012 ; 15-17 February , 2012 , pp. 499-506 ; ISBN: 9780769546339 Hamedani, P. K ; Hessabi, S ; Sarbazi-Azad, H ; Jerger, N. E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper proposes three ILP-based static thermalaware mapping algorithms for 3D Networks on Chip (NoC) to explore the thermal constraints and their effects on temperature and performance. Through complexity analysis, we show that the first algorithm, an optimal one, is not suitable for 3D NoC. Therefore, we develop two approximation algorithms and analyze their algorithmic complexities to show their proficiency. As the simulation results show, the mapping algorithms that employ direct thermal calculation to minimize the temperature reduce the peak temperature by up to 24% and 22%, for the benchmarks that have the highest communication rate and largest number of tasks, respectively. This...

Stochastic piecewise affine control with application to pitch control of helicopter

    , Article Nonlinear Analysis: Hybrid Systems ; Vol. 15 , 2015 , pp. 86-97 ; ISSN: 1751570X Merat, K ; Salarieh, H ; Alasty, A ; Meghdari, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, at first the stability condition which gives an upper stochastic bound for a class of Stochastic Hybrid Systems (SHS) with deterministic jumps is derived. Here, additive noise signals are considered that do not vanish at equilibrium points. The presented theorem gives an upper bound for the second stochastic moment or variance of the system trajectories. Then, the linear case of SHS is investigated to show the application of the theorem. For the linear case of such stochastic hybrid systems, the stability criterion is obtained in terms of Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) and an upper bound on state covariance is obtained for them. Then utilizing the stability theorem, an output...

    Abstract
In this paper, for one-dimensional stochastic linear fractional systems in terms of the Riemann-Liouville fractional derivative, the optimal control is derived. It is assumed that the state is completely observable and all the information regarding this is available. The formulation leads to a set of stochastic fractional forward and backward equation in the Riemann-Liouville sense. The proposed method has been checked via some numerical simulations which show the effectiveness of the fractional stochastic optimal algorithm
