Impact of loss on the wave dynamics in photonic waveguide lattices

    , Article Physical Review Letters ; Vol. 113, Issue. 12 , 2014 ; ISSN: 00319007 Golshani, M ; Weimann, S ; Jafari, K ; Nezhad, M. K ; Langari, A ; Bahrampour, A. R ; Eichelkraut, T ; Mahdavi, S. M ; Szameit, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
We analyze the impact of loss in lattices of coupled optical waveguides and find that, in such a case, the hopping between adjacent waveguides is necessarily complex. This results not only in a transition of the light spreading from ballistic to diffusive, but also in a new kind of diffraction that is caused by loss dispersion. We prove our theoretical results with experimental observations

Phase transition to spatial Bloch-like oscillation in squeezed photonic lattices

    , Article Physical Review A - Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics ; Volume 88, Issue 2 , 2013 ; 10502947 (ISSN) Nezhad, M. K ; Bahrampour, A. R ; Golshani, M ; Mahdavi, S. M ; Langari, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
We propose an exactly solvable waveguide lattice incorporating an inhomogeneous coupling coefficient. This structure provides classical analogs to the squeezed number and squeezed coherent intensity distribution in quantum optics where the propagation length plays the role of a squeezed amplitude. The intensity pattern is obtained in a closed form for an arbitrary distribution of the initial beam profile. We have also investigated the phase transition to the spatial Bloch-like oscillations by adding a linear gradient to the propagation constant of each waveguide (α). Our analytical results show that the Bloch-like oscillations appear above a critical value for the linear gradient of the...

Effect of long-range correlated disorder on the transverse localization of light in 1D array of optical waveguides

    , Article Optics Communications ; Volume 307 , 2013 , Pages 39-45 ; 00304018 (ISSN) Khazaei Nezhad, M ; Mahdavi, S. M ; Bahrampour, A. R ; Golshani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
In this paper, the effects of the long-range correlated diagonal disordered optical waveguide arrays in the presence and absence of the positive Kerr nonlinearity are analyzed numerically. The calculated inverse localization length shows that the long-range correlation in a disordered system causes a decrease in the transverse localization in linear optical waveguide arrays. In the presence of positive Kerr nonlinearity, the inverse localization length is increased by increasing the nonlinear parameters in long-range correlated disordered systems in comparison with the uniform distribution disordered systems. This means that the long range correlation causes an enhancement of transverse...

    Abstract
Electrical properties and electronic structure of Bi1-xCa xFe1-yMnyO3-δ grown by pulsed-laser deposition on BaTiO3/SiO2/Si substrate were investigated. Results showed that Ca has drastic effect on symmetry of crystal and electrical poperties of BiFeO3. On the other hand, Mn revealed to have more radical effect on optical properties and energy gap of the compound. XPS results represented that although Ca tend to decrease Fe valence state, Mn tends to stabilize it at 3+ (at least in this concentrations). UV-visible study yielded bandgap of 2.51-2.81 eV (at 300 K) for different concentrations of Ca and Mn. UV-visible spectra also revealed sub-bandgap defect transitions at 2.2 and 2.4 eV....

    Abstract
In this study, tungsten oxide films were deposited by pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) technique. The as-deposited films were annealed at 250 °C in air for 1 h. The surface morphology, microstructure, crystalline phase, and chemical composition of the films were characterized by SEM, XRD and XPS techniques. Pt nanoparticles were deposited onto the tungsten oxide films through a two-step process. First of all, a layer of PtCl2 was coated on the WO3 surface by drop-drying the PtCl2 solution onto the WO3 surface at 60 °C. Consequently, the reduction of the PtCl2 into the metallic Pt nanoparticles was performed at 200 °C. In this study, the effect of the temperature during hydrogen reduction of...

    Abstract
In this paper a simulation of the transverse localization of light in 1D array of optical waveguides in the presence of off-diagonal disorder is presented. Effects of self-focusing and self-defocusing Kerr nonlinearity on the transverse localization of surface and bulk modes of the disordered waveguides array are taken into consideration. The simulation shows that in the off-diagonal disordered array at low nonlinear parameters, the transverse localization of light becomes more than that of the corresponding diagonal disordered array. However by increasing the nonlinear parameters the diagonal disordered array is localized more than the associated off-diagonal disordered array for both...

    Abstract
It has been proposed that emission spectrum of random lasers with magnetically active semiconductor constituents can be made tunable by external magnetic fields. By employing the FDTD method, the spectral intensity and spatial distribution of electric field are calculated in the presence of an external magnetic field. It is numerically shown that due to the magneto-optical Voigt effect, the emission spectrum of a semiconductor-based random laser can be made tunable by adjusting the external magnetic field. The effect of magnetic field on the localization length of the laser modes is investigated. It is also shown that the spatial distribution of electric field exhibited remarkable...

    Abstract
Time-dependent model is presented to simulate random lasers in the presence of an inhomogeneous gain medium. PbSe quantum dots (QDs) with an arbitrary size distribution are treated as an inhomogeneous gain medium. By introducing inhomogeneity of the PbSe QDs in polarization, rate, and Maxwell's equations, our model is constructed for a one-dimensional disordered system. By employing the finite difference time-domain method, the governing equations are numerically solved and lasing spectra and spatial distribution of the electric field are calculated. The effect of increasing the pumping rate on the laser characteristics is investigated. The results show that the number of lasing modes and...

Conductor-insulator transition and electronic structure of Ca-doped BiFeO 3 films

    , Article Materials Letters ; Volume 83 , 2012 , Pages 124-126 ; 0167577X (ISSN) Ahadi, K ; Nemati, A ; Mahdavi, S. M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The electronic conductor-insulator transition in Ca-doped BiFeO 3 films grown by pulsed-laser deposition technique has been investigated. Nature of the transition is resolved to be Mott type through the control of band-filling. Calcium resolved to have colossal effect on enhancing the electrical conductivity of BiFeO 3, but it did not affect band gap of the mother phase perceptibly. UV-visible study yielded band gap of 2.72-2.81 eV (at 300 K) for different concentrations of calcium. Both UV-visible and photoluminescence spectra revealed sub-band gap transitions at 2.17 and 2.38 eV, of which the latter might be ascribed to the oxygen vacancies

    Abstract
In this letter a simple procedure to synthesize sodium tungsten oxide nano-thick plates from WO 3 films has been reported. WO 3 films were grown by pulsed-laser deposition method and then heat treated at temperatures up to 560 °C and times up to 120 min. Slide glass was used as both substrate and sodium source simultaneously. XRD analysis revealed presence of an amorphous structure for as-deposited WO 3 films. On the other hand, XRD showed formation of a monoclinic WO 3 structure with annealing in lower temperatures and a triclinic Na 0.5WO 3.25 structure with annealing at higher temperatures. Intensity of the triclinic phase peaks enhanced drastically by rising annealing temperature and...

    Abstract
In the presence of self and cross saturation effects, the laser governing equations are nonlinear. To solve the governing equations of a fiber Bragg grating random laser, on the basis of the transfer matrix method, a simple and fast iterative method is introduced. The method is employed to obtain the frequency, threshold pumping rate and spatial distribution of different laser modes. Numerical calculations show that by increasing the number of fiber Bragg grating, the number of lasing modes increases, while the threshold pumping rate of the first mode decreases. Our theoretical results are in agreement with the experimental observations reported by previous authors

Ultraviolet photodetectors based on ZnO sheets: The effect of sheet size on photoresponse properties

    , Article Applied Surface Science ; Volume 258, Issue 14 , 2012 , Pages 5405-5411 ; 01694332 (ISSN) Ghasempour Ardakani, A ; Pazoki, M ; Mahdavi, S. M ; Bahrampour, A. R ; Taghavinia, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this work, ultraviolet photodetectors based on electrodeposited ZnO sheet thin films were fabricated on a glass substrate. Before electrodeposition, a thin buffer layer of ZnO was deposited on the glass by pulsed laser deposition method. This layer not only acted as a nucleation site for ZnO sheet growth, but also made it possible to use cheap glass substrate instead of conventional fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate. Our results showed that photoresponse properties of the photodetectors strongly depend on the sheet sizes. The smaller sheets exhibited enhanced photosensitivity, shortened fall times and decreased gain compared to larger ones. We showed that photodetectors based on...

    Abstract
We propose that spectral intensity of superconductor based random lasers can be made tunable by changing temperature. The two fluid model and wavelength dependent dispersion formula have been employed to describe the optical response of the superconducting materials. Random laser characteristics have been calculated using the one dimensional FDTD method. Our simulation results reveal that the emission spectrum can be manipulated through the ambient temperature of the system. It is observed that transition from metal phase to pure superconducting phase leads to the enhancement of the laser emission. Furthermore, spatial distribution of the fields in one dimensional disordered media is very...

    Abstract
In this paper, the lasing action in three-dimensional active random systems has been numerically investigated. Here, random systems of spherical dielectric particles imbedded in an active medium are considered. The quasi steady state approximation for the population inversion of the active medium is applied to solve three dimensional governing equations. Results show that when the density of particles increases to an upper limit, the intensity of lasing modes is enhanced. Also, the effects of pumping rate and particle size on the number of lasing modes and their intensity are studied. Lasing threshold of laser modes in different disordered systems is calculated and it is shown that by an...
