Solid-Liquid Mass Transfer in the Annular Region of a Taylor-Couette Contacting Device

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Faraji Dizaji, Naeimeh (Author) ; Molaei Dehkordi, Asghar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Vortex flow reactor (VFR) is used for biochemical reactions and separation applications. By using the second flow regime, called Taylor-Couette flow, VFR provides high amounts of mass transfer and mixing for biological components sensitive to shear stress. Mass transfer in a bench-scale Taylor-Couette contactor with a radius ratio, equal to 0.77 and an aspect ratio, equal to 30.7 was studied for solid particles dissolution. The working fluid was water and the suspended particles were benzoic acid. In this project the concentration of fluid phase was measured by injection of definite amount of the solid particles in to the contactor and sampling in different time intervals and the effects of...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Taleshi, Navid (Author) ; Sayf Kordi, Ali Akbar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
There are many different opinions about the mass transfer contribution during jet formation in liquid - liquid extraction columns, and this could impact on their design. In this work, using experimental data obtained in two RDC columns and unpublished data of the jet mass transfer coefficients, mass transfer can be predicted during jet formation. The jet length and diameter were anticipated by using existing relations, and then the jet mass transfer coefficient was predicted, jet mass transfer rate and total column mass transfer rate were calculated and finally the contribution of mass transfer during jet formation in the column was predicted. Mass transfer contribution in the jet in various...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Safarirad, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Bastani, Darioush (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Liquid-liquid extraction is one of most important processes in chemical industries. So determination of operating condition effects is very critical. In this thesis we modeled concentration profile in the jet via mathematical equations and compare with experimental data. The major problem in concentration profile and solving equations is lack of knowledge in velocity profile within the jet was formed. Therefore, different flow models such as piston flow model, parabolic flow model, vortex flow model and a cone flow model was used and terminal concentrations inside the jet compared with laboratory values. Results shows the most accurate model to predict the flow concentration along the...

Numerical Simulation of Cavitating Flows with Thermodynamic Effects

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farajollahi, Amir Hamzeh (Author) ; Hejranfar, Kazem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study, the numerical simulation of cavitating flows for cryogens fluids is performed. The algorithm employs the homogenous, multiphase Euler/Navier-Stokes equations with the interface capturing method. The thermodynamic and thermal effects substantially impact the cavitation dynamics of cryogenic fluids and therefore these effects should be considered by solving the energy equation in conjunction with the mass and momentum conservation, and updating the fluid physical properties. Here, two cavitation modeling strategies, namely, the barotropic cavitation model and the transport equation-based model are used. Both laminar and turbulent cavitating flows are studied in this work. For...

Numerical Simulation of Mass Transport in Cardiovascular System

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Haji Gholami, Iman (Author) ; Firoozabadi , Bahar (Supervisor) ; Saidi, Mohammad Said (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this dissertation, mass transport in cardiovascular system has been simulated using one-dimensional approach. As one-dimensional simulation has computation cost less than that of the three-dimensional simulations, and as it is more precise than lumped models, they are extensively used in the study of the phenomena in cardiovascular system. In addition, such an approach is more useful in the extraction of medical indices. In this study, a one-dimensional geometry of the systemic arteries has been used to solve momentum and continuity equations using characteristics method.
At first, the physiological data of the systemic arteries have been used to simulate a one-dimensional geometry...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Reshadi, Milad (Author) ; Saeedi, Mohammad Hassan (Supervisor) ; Mozaffari, Ali Asghar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Dissemination of an analyte under the laminar flows plays a major role in measuring and assessment of biological fluids such as sample preparation in the context of microfluidic systems. Due to the development of manufacturing technology in the Lab-on-a-chip devices, the production of rectangular microchannels with finite aspect ratios and micron and submicron sizes has been provided by which the effect of electrokinetic phenomena on concentration distribution will be magnified in these systems. On the other hand, these biofluids are viscoelastic and show extraordinary flow behaviors, not existing in Newtonian fluids and adopting appropriate constitutive equations these exotic flow behaviors...

Mass Transport Between Stationary Random Measures

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Khezeli, Ali (Author) ; Alishahi, Kasra (Supervisor) ; Haji Mirsadeghi, Mir-Omid (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Given two stationary random measures on Rd, we study transport kernels between them that are translation-covariant. We will provide an algorithm that constructs such a transport kernel, with some assumption on their intensities. As a result, this algorithm can be used to construct the Palm version of an ergodic random measure by simply applying a (random) translation and vice versa, to reconstruct the distribution of the random measure from its Palm distribution. Given realizations of the two random measures, our algorithm provides its result in a deterministic way. The existence of such transport kernels is proved in [18] in an abstract way. Nevertheless, there has been tremendous interest...

Also in 0.5%wt the decrease in interfacial tension decreased diameter of drops and as a result mass transfer decreased too. In 1%wt the increase in viscosity increased the diameter of drops and then the...

The influences of various operating conditions such as the rotational speed of the disks, the direction of rotation, the feed radial location, the feed distribution pattern, the distance between the disks, and the feed flow rate on the mixing quality were examined carefully. The obtained...
