Prediction of shape and internal structure of the proximal femur using a modified level set method for structural topology optimisation

    , Article Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering ; Volume 15, Issue 8 , 2012 , Pages 835-844 ; 10255842 (ISSN) Bahari, M. K ; Farahmand, F ; Rouhi, G ; Movahhedy, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A computational framework was developed to simulate the bone remodelling process as a structural topology optimisation problem. The mathematical formulation of the Level Set technique was extended and then implemented into a coronal plane model of the proximal femur to simulate the remodelling of internal structure and external geometry of bone into the optimal state. Results indicated that the proposed approach could reasonably mimic the major geometrical and material features of the natural bone. Simulation of the internal bone remodelling on the typical gross shape of the proximal femur, resulted in a density distribution pattern with good consistency with that of the natural bone. When...

A portable culture chamber for studying the effects of hydrostatic pressure on cellular monolayers

, Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science ; 2018 ; 09544062 (ISSN) Kiyoumarsioskouei, A ; Saidi, M ; Mosadegh, B ; Firoozabadi, B ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Hydrostatic pressure is one of the most fundamental and common mechanical stimuli in the body, playing a critical role in the homeostasis of all organ systems. Kidney function is affected by high blood pressure, namely hypertension, by the increased pressure acting on the glomerular capillary walls. This general effect of hypertension is diagnosed as a chronic disease, but underlying mechanistic causes are still not well understood. This paper reports a portable and adaptive device for studying the effects of hydrostatic pressure on a monolayer of cells. The fabricated device fits within a conventional incubation system and microscope. The effects of various pressures and durations were...

    Abstract
Scar tissue size following myocardial infarction is an independent predictor of cardiovascular outcomes, yet little is known about factors regulating scar size. We demonstrate that collagen V, a minor constituent of heart scars, regulates the size of heart scars after ischemic injury. Depletion of collagen V led to a paradoxical increase in post-infarction scar size with worsening of heart function. A systems genetics approach across 100 in-bred strains of mice demonstrated that collagen V is a critical driver of postinjury heart function. We show that collagen V deficiency alters the mechanical properties of scar tissue, and altered reciprocal feedback between matrix and cells induces...

A mechanobiological mathematical model of liver metabolism

    Abstract
The liver plays a complex role in metabolism and detoxification, and better tools are needed to understand its function and to develop liver-targeted therapies. In this study, we establish a mechanobiological model of liver transport and hepatocyte biology to elucidate the metabolism of urea and albumin, the production/detoxification of ammonia, and consumption of oxygen and nutrients. Since hepatocellular shear stress (SS) can influence the enzymatic activities of liver, the effect of SS on the urea and albumin synthesis are empirically modeled through the mechanotransduction mechanisms. The results demonstrate that the rheology and dynamics of the sinusoid flow can significantly affect...

Analysis and Simulation of Cell Migration with VCM Software

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sadeghizadeh, Sajjad (Author) ; Ejtehadi, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Cells in their surrounding environment subjected to biochemical and biomechanical stimuli and respond to this signals. The mechanism by which cells transduce external mechanical signals into responses is called Mechanotransduction and cell use this mechanism to sense and respond to extracellular signals. Cells control processes like migration and division by mechanosensing. Cell migration is one of the most important responses to Cell-ECM interaction. This migration underlies many biological processes including embryogenesis, wound healing, tumorogenesis, morphogenesis and immune defense, so the study of cell migration is of particular importance. If there are external signals in cells...
