Developing tough terpolymer hydrogel with outstanding swelling ability by hydrophobic association cross-linking

    , Article Polymer ; Volume 254 , 2022 ; 00323861 (ISSN) Rahmani, P ; Shojaei, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
Hydrogels with remarkable hydrophilicity and tunable toughness are appealing materials to serve as superabsorbent polymers. However, chemically cross-linked hydrogels often suffer from low toughness regardless of their considerable swelling, restricting their widespread applications. In comparison, the network of physically cross-linked hydrogels can be regulated to meet both a high swelling ratio and considerable toughness. Here, we develop superabsorbent and tough hydrophobic associated hydrogels using terpolymerization of poly acrylic acid (PAA), polyacrylamide (PAM), and lauryl methacrylate (LMA) within the micelles formed by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant. To this end, various...

    Abstract
In this paper, the dissolution and mobilization of non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) blobs in the Surfactant-Enhanced Aquifer Remediation (SEAR) process were upscaled using dynamic pore network modeling (PNM) of three-dimensional and unstructured networks. We considered corner flow and micro-flow mechanisms including snap-off and piston-like movement for two-phase flow. Moreover, NAPL entrapment and remobilization were evaluated using force analysis to develop the capillary desaturation curve (CDC) and predict the onset of remobilization. The corner diffusion mechanism was also applied in the modeling of interphase mass transfer to represent NAPL dissolution as the dominant mass transfer...

    Abstract
Nowadays, as the oil reservoirs reaching their half-life, using enhanced oil recovery methods is more necessary and more common. Simulations are the synthetic process of real systems. In this study, simulation of water and surfactant injection into a porous media containing oil (two-phase) was performed using the computational fluid dynamics method on the image of a real micro-model. Also, the selected anionic surfactant is sodium dodecyl sulfate, which is more effective in sand reservoirs. The effect of using surfactant depends on its concentration. This dependence on concentration in using injection compounds is referred to as critical micelle concentration (CMC). In this study, an...

    Abstract
Catecholamine neurotransmitters, specifically, dopamine (DA), epinephrine (EP), and norepinephrine (NE), are known as substantial indicators of various neurological diseases. Developing rapid detection methods capable of simultaneously screening their concentrations is highly desired for early clinical diagnosis of such diseases. To this aim, we have designed an optical sensor array using three fluorescent dyes with distinct emission bands and have monitored variations in their emission profiles upon the addition of DA, EP, and NE in the presence of gold ions. Because of the different reducing power of catecholamines, differently sized gold nanoparticles (GNPs) with different levels of...

    Abstract
Porphyrins are organic compounds that continue to attract much theoretical interest, and have been called the “pigments of life”. They have a wide role in photodynamic and sonodynamic therapy, along with uses in magnetic resonance, fluorescence and photoacoustic imaging. There is a vast range of porphyrins that have been isolated or designed, but few of them have real clinical applications. Due to the hydrophobic properties of porphyrins, and their tendency to aggregate by stacking of the planar molecules they are difficult to work with in aqueous media. Therefore encapsulating them in nanoparticles (NPs) or attachment to various delivery vehicles have been used to improve delivery...

Developing a novel colloidal model for predicting asphaltene precipitation from crude oil by alkane dilution

    , Article Journal of Molecular Liquids ; Volume 318 , 2020 Shadman, M. M ; Badizad, M. H ; Dehghanizadeh, M ; Saeedi Dehaghani, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
This research aims to propose a thermodynamic model for predicting asphaltene precipitation upon diluting a crude oil with a paraffinic solvent. To this end, a thorough mathematical formulation was carried out to derive a novel micellization model based on the associative properties of asphaltenic compounds. It was assumed that asphaltenes exist in the oil both as monomeric molecules and aggregated cores; with stabilization latter by attachment of resin on its periphery. The aggregation equilibrium was established by taking into account asphaltene's lyophobic tendency, heat of resin adsorption, and interfacial tension between micelle and oil media which is the main driving factor...

    Abstract
Magnetic micelle nanoparticles with thermoresponsive behavior were designed for thermo-triggered paclitaxel delivery. For this purpose, thermoresponsive triblock copolymer poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide)-b-polycaprolactone-b-poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) was prepared. The magnetic micelle was formed by self-assembly of triblock copolymer on the magnetite which was coated by oleic acid. The size of the magnetic micelle was between 30–40 nm reported by transmission electron microscopy. Also, dynamic light scattering indicated the hydrodynamic diameter was thermal dependent. Moreover, the drug release profile showed thermo-triggered release of paclitaxel. Thus, the smart nanocarrier has potential...

Isolation and screening of Bacillus subtilis MJ01 for MEOR application: biosurfactant characterization, production optimization and wetting effect on carbonate surfaces

    , Article Journal of Petroleum Exploration and Production Technology ; Volume 9, Issue 1 , 2019 , Pages 233-245 ; 21900558 (ISSN) Jahanbani Veshareh, M ; Ganji Azad, E ; Deihimi, T ; Niazi, A ; Ayatollahi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer Verlag  2019
    Abstract
The bacterial strain MJ01 was isolated from stock tank water of one of the Iranian south oil field production facilities. The 16S rRNA gene of isolate, MJ01, showed 99% similarity to Bacillus subtilis. The results revealed that biosurfactant produced by this strain was lipopeptide-like surfactin based on FTIR analysis. Critical micelle concentration of produced surfactin in distilled water was 0.06 g/l. Wettability study showed that at zero salinity surfactin can change original oil-wet state to water-wet state, but in seawater salinity it cannot modify the wettability significantly. To utilize this biosurfactant in ex situ MEOR process, economical and reservoir engineering technical...

    , Article Acta Biomaterialia ; Volume 76 , 2018 , Pages 239-256 ; 17427061 (ISSN) Behroozi, F ; Abdkhodaie, M. J ; Sadeghi Abandansari, H ; Satarian, L ; Molazem, M ; Al Jamal, K. T ; Baharvand, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Acta Materialia Inc  2018
    Abstract
The oxidation-reduction (redox)–responsive micelle system is based on a diselenide-containing triblock copolymer, poly(ε-caprolactone)-bis(diselenide-methoxy poly(ethylene glycol)/poly(ethylene glycol)-folate) [PCL-(SeSe-mPEG/PEG-FA)2]. This has helped in the development of tumor-targeted delivery for hydrophobic anticancer drugs. The diselenide bond, as a redox-sensitive linkage, was designed in such a manner that it is located at the hydrophilic–hydrophobic hinge to allow complete collapse of the micelle and thus efficient drug release in redox environments. The amphiphilic block copolymers self-assembled into micelles at concentrations higher than the critical micelle concentration (CMC)...

    Abstract
This investigation is conducted on one of the southern Iranian oil fields, which experiences a fault on its gas cap. Therefore, no traditional gas injection and normal water injection for pressure maintenance is suggested. The target is set to inject special compatible and proper type of chemicals in each single well to avoid the pressure increase for the risk of oil and gas spill. Two different sources of aqueous phases, namely formation brine and sea water were used to find the effects of different brine composition on the main mechanisms of releasing the trapped oil, interfacial tension (IFT) and wettability alteration. The obtained results reveal that both the ionic liquid (IL) based...

These novel MNPs can be tailored to be responsive to pH variations, redox potential, enzymatic activation, thermal...

Morphology transition control of polyaniline from nanotubes to nanospheres in a soft template method

    , Article Polymer International ; Volume 64, Issue 1 , June , 2015 , Pages 88-95 ; 09598103 (ISSN) Pirhady Tavandashti, N ; Ghorbani, M ; Shojaei, A ; Sharif University of Technology
John Wiley and Sons Ltd  2015
    Abstract
A soft template route is reported for the fabrication of polyaniline nanospheres via the oxidative polymerization of aniline in the presence of β-naphthalenesulfonic acid (β-NSA) as both surfactqant and dopant, and ammonium persulfate as oxidant at 2-5°C. Control over the morphology and size of the nanoparticles was achieved by changing the reaction medium via addition of an organic cosolvent (i.e. ethanol or ethylene glycol) and by controlling the concentrations of aniline and β-NSA and the molar ratio of β-NSA to aniline. By this means the size of the β-NSA-aniline micelles and the way that aniline monomer interacts with the micelles were controlled. In fact the lower dielectric constant...
