, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Delaviz Bonab, Arman (Author) ; Esmail Pourestekanchi, Homayoon (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Electrical substations and its vital components such as switchgears, have experienced severe damage during recent earthquakes, followed by widespread blackouts around the world. To improve the seismic resiliency of power grids and use probabilistic decision-making frameworks, comprehensive fragility data for the different equipment is needed. The purpose of this study is to assess the vulnerability of equipment in substations and to develop fragility curves for this equipment. For this purpose, four main equipment of switchgear, namely circuit breaker, disconnect switch, current transformer and surge arrester, have been modeled in three dimensions and verified. After examining the different...

A New Procedure for Derivation of Fragility Curve with Endurance Time Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jeddi, Mohammad (Author) ; Estekanchi, Homayoon (Supervisor) ; Mahsuli, Mojtaba (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This project aims at the calculation of response distribution of a structure using Endurance Time Analysis (ETA). The traditional approach for this calculation is Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA). One of the drawbacks of the IDA is its excessive computational complexity. In the ETA, the structure is analyzed using a set of artificial ground motions with increasing intensities as time passes. As a result, the ETA can be used to calculate the response distribution of the structure in a range of intensities. In the traditional ETA, only the median of the response is calculated. In this study, the response distribution is calculated as well as the median. To achieve this, the proposed approach...

Using sliding mode control to adjust drum level of a boiler unit with time varying parameters

    , Article ASME 2010 10th Biennial Conference on Engineering Systems Design and Analysis ; Vol. 5 , 2010 , pp. 29-33 ; ISBN: 9780791849194 Moradi, H ; Bakhtiari-Nejad, F ; Saffar-Avval, M ; Alasty, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Stable control of water level of drum is of great importance for economic operation of power plant steam generator systems. In this paper, a linear model of the boiler unit with time varying parameters is used for simulation. Two transfer functions between drum water level (output variable) and feed-water and steam mass rates (input variables) are considered. Variation of model parameters may be arisen from disturbances affecting water level of drum, model uncertainties and parameter mismatch due to the variant operating conditions. To achieve a perfect tracking of the desired drum water level, two sliding mode controllers are designed separately. Results show that the designed controllers...

Design of a robust model predictive controller with reduced computational complexity

    , Article ISA Transactions ; Volume 53, Issue 6 , 1 November , 2014 , Pages 1754-1759 ; ISSN: 00190578 Razi, M ; Haeri, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The practicality of robust model predictive control of systems with model uncertainties depends on the time consumed for solving a defined optimization problem. This paper presents a method for the computational complexity reduction in a robust model predictive control. First a scaled state vector is defined such that the objective function contours in the defined optimization problem become vertical or horizontal ellipses or circles, and then the control input is determined at each sampling time as a state feedback that minimizes the infinite horizon objective function by solving some linear matrix inequalities. The simulation results show that the number of iterations to solve the problem...

State estimation, positioning and anti-swing robust control of traveling crane-lifter system

    , Article Applied Mathematical Modelling ; March , 2015 ; 0307904X (ISSN) Moradi, H ; Vossoughi, G ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Inc  2015
    Abstract
Under different loading conditions, the over-head cranes may experience a wide range of model parameters variation. A robust control strategy is developed to achieve the high positioning accuracy, short transportation time and suppression of swing angle for an uncertain over-head crane system. Over-head crane is modeled as a three degrees of freedom system and control problem is investigated for two cases: a system with a single control input (the force on trolley) and a system with two control inputs (the force on trolley and the torque on lifter). Regulator and observer systems are designed. To achieve the tracking objectives, an optimal robust controller is designed based on μ-synthesis...

Forecasting the effects of a Canada-US currency union on output and prices: A counterfactual analysis

    , Article Journal of Forecasting ; Volume 32, Issue 7 , 2013 , Pages 639-653 ; 02776693 (ISSN) Mahdi Barakchian, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
This paper is a counterfactual analysis investigating the consequences of the formation of a currency union for Canada and the USA: whether outputs increase and prices decrease if these countries form a currency union. We use a two-country cointegrated model to conduct the counterfactual analysis, where the conditional forecasts are generated based on the Gaussian assumption. To deal with structural breaks and model uncertainty, conditional forecasts are generated from different models/estimation windows and the model-averaging technique is used to combine the forecasts. We also examine the robustness of our results to parameter uncertainty using the wild bootstrap method. The results show...

    Abstract
Recent progress in developing artificial neural network (ANN) metamodels has paved the way for reliable use of these models in the prediction of air pollutant concentrations in urban atmosphere. However, improvement of prediction performance, proper selection of input parameters and model architecture, and quantification of model uncertainties remain key challenges to their practical use. This study has three main objectives: to select an ensemble of input parameters for ANN metamodels consisting of meteorological variables that are predictable by conventional weather forecast models and variables that properly describe the complex nature of pollutant source conditions in a major city, to...

    Abstract
This paper presents a new set of reliability sensitivity measures. The purpose is to identify the optimal manner in which to mitigate risk to civil infrastructure, and reduce model uncertainty in order to improve risk estimates. Three measures are presented. One identifies the infrastructure components that should be prioritized for retrofit. Another measure identifies the infrastructure that should be prioritized for more refined modeling. The third measure identifies the models that should be prioritized in research to improve models, for example by gathering new data. The developments are presented in the context of a region with 622 buildings that are subjected to seismicity from several...

Sensorless control of PMSMs with tolerance for delays and stator resistance uncertainties

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics ; Volume 28, Issue 3 , 2013 , Pages 1391-1399 ; 08858993 (ISSN) Moghadam, M. A. G ; Tahami, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Position sensorless control of ac machines at zero and low speed is possible using high-frequency carrier injection methods. These methods utilize anisotropic properties of rotor. Therefore, they may lose their efficiency for nonsalient machines or machines with small rotor saliency. In these machines, measurement noise and offset, existing delays, as well as model uncertainties may lead to inaccurate estimation of rotor position. Stator resistance which is usually neglected in these methods may also lead to a considerable error especially in machines with small rotor saliency. In this paper, a new position estimation method is presented, and it is shown that in comparison to conventional...

    Abstract
A new nonlinear model reference adaptive impedance controller is presented for the control of robot manipulators with uncertainties in model parameters such as friction coefficients. This method provides asymptotic tracking of a reference impedance model for the robot end-effector in operational space which is more sensible for the patient compared to the joint space impedance used in previous works. The model uncertainties such as friction coefficients are compensated using an adaptation law. The asymptotic tracking of the reference impedance model is shown using a Lyapunov function. The tracking performance and friction compensation are also demonstrated through simulation on a...

    Abstract
In this paper, a novel decentralized adaptive control scheme for multiagent formation control is proposed based on an integration of artificial potential functions with robust control techniques. Fully actuated mobile agents with partially unknown models are considered, where an adaptive fuzzy logic system is used to approximate the unknown system dynamics. The robust performance criterion is used to attenuate the adaptive fuzzy approximation error and external disturbances to a prescribed level. The advantages of the proposed controller can be listed as robustness to input nonlinearity, external disturbances, and model uncertainties, and applicability on a large diversity of autonomous...

    , Article International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology ; Volume 53, Issue 5-8 , 2011 , Pages 777-788 ; 02683768 (ISSN) Khodaygan, S ; Movahhedy, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In mechanical assemblies, individual components are placed together to deliver a certain function. The performance, quality, and cost of the mechanical assembly are significantly affected by its tolerances. Toleranced dimensions inherently generate an uncertain environment in a mechanical assembly. This paper presents a proper method for tolerance analysis of mechanical assemblies with asymmetric tolerances based on an uncertainty model. This mathematical approach is based on fuzzy logic and tolerance accumulation models such as worst-case and root-sum-square methods. A fuzzy-based tolerance representation is developed to model uncertainty of tolerance components in the mechanical...

    Abstract
The main focus of this paper is to develop a model considering some significant aspects of real-world supply chain production planning approved by industries. To do so, we consider a supply chain (SC) model, which contains multiple suppliers, multiple manufactures and multiple customers. This model is formulated as a fuzzy multi objective mixed-integer nonlinear programming (FMOMINLP) to address a comprehensive multi-site, multi-period and multi-product aggregate production planning (APP) problem under uncertainty. Four conflicting objectives are considered in the presented model simultaneously, which are (i) to minimize the total cost of the SC (production costs, workforce wage,...

    Abstract
During drying processes, moisture control of food products, such as dried tea, is of great importance. Improving dryer control, results in consistent production and reduction of energy consumption. However, the dryer is a complex system associated with model uncertainties. In this paper, a realistic uncertain model of a fluidized tea bed dryer is considered. Moisture content and temperature of tea leaves (or other products) are controlled at desired values by manipulating tea leaves heating rate. Developing a code by Robust Control Toolbox of MATLAB and modeling uncertainties, a robust controller is designed based on ′-synthesis with DK-iteration algorithm. Results show that in the presence...

    Abstract
In this paper, we address recovery of sparse signals from compressed measurements, and sparse signal approximation, which have received considerable attention over the last decade. First, we revisit smoothed L0 (SL0), a well-known sparse recovery algorithm, and give some insights into it that have not been noticed previously. Specifically, we re-derive the SL0 algorithm based on proximal methods, and using recent results in solving nonconvex problems by proximal algorithms, we provide a convergence guarantee for it. In addition, inspired by this derivation, we propose a general family of algorithms, which we call iterative sparsification-projection (ISP), having SL0 as a special member. Our...

    Abstract
The flight of unmanned aerial vehicles is often associated with model uncertainties, measurement noises, and environmental disturbances such as wind gust. To mitigate these challenges, the accurate estimation of states is vital. Moreover, the wind model and its parameters should also be estimated and compensated during the flight. In this paper, a multiple model filter is implemented for this purpose. To investigate the performance of the multiple model filter, three different models including constant wind, '1-cosine' model and wind shear model are considered. The multiple model filter utilizes three extended Kalman filter to simultaneously estimate the model of wind, the parameters of the...

    Abstract
This paper presents a robust model predictive control algorithm with a time-varying terminal constraint set for systems with model uncertainty and input constraints. In this algorithm, the nonlinear system is approximated by a linear model where the approximation error is considered as an unstructured uncertainty that can be represented by a Lipschitz nonlinear function. A continuum of terminal constraint sets is constructed off-line, and robust stability is achieved on-line by using a variable control horizon. This approach significantly reduces the computational complexity. The proposed robust model predictive controller with a terminal constraint set is used in tracking set-points for...
