    , Article 2014 14th International Conference on Environment and Electrical Engineering, EEEIC 2014 - Conference Proceedings ; 2014 , p. 199-203 ; ISBN: 9781480000000 Rastegar, M ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The presence of different energy carriers as well as the advent of new multi-generation technologies such as combined heat and power (CHP) at homes necessitates designing an integrated model for optimal operation of such multi-carrier energy home. A residential energy hub model including a CHP and a Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) is presented in this paper to show the multi-carrier energy system operation. In addition, this paper proposes an optimization-based formulation for PHEV charging control in the residential energy hub. The payment cost is minimized for the charge scheduling of PHEV through optimization of the residential energy hub operation in response to the...

    , Article Petroleum Science and Technology ; Vol. 32, Issue. 18 , 2014 , Pages 2245-2252 ; ISSN: 10916466 Arefi, A ; Khorasheh, F ; Farhadi, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Hydrocracking is one of the most versatile petroleum refining processes for production of valuable products including gasoline, gas oil, and jet fuel. In this paper, a five-parameter continuous lumping model was used for kinetic modeling of hydrocracking of vacuum gas oil (VGO). The model parameters were estimated from industrial data obtained from a fixed bed reactor operating at an average temperature of 400°C and residence time of 0.3 h. Product distributions were obtained in terms of the weight fraction of various boiling point cuts. The model parameters were estimated using the Nelder-Mead optimization procedure and were correlated with temperature. Comparison of experimental and...

    , Article Journal of Natural Gas Science and Engineering ; Volume 21 , November , 2014 , Pages 19-25 ; ISSN: 18755100 Hamzehie, M. E ; Mazinani, S ; Davardoost, F ; Mokhtare, A ; Najibi, H ; Van der Bruggen, B ; Darvishmanesh, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Absorption of carbon dioxide (CO2) in aqueous solutions can be improved by the addition of other compounds. However, this requires a large amount of equilibrium data for solubility estimation in a wide ranges of temperature, pressure and concentration. In this paper, a model based on an artificial neural network (ANN) was proposed and developed with mixtures containing monoethanolamine (MEA), diethanolamine (DEA), methyldiethanolamine (MDEA), 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP), methanol, triethanolamine (TEA), piperazine (PZ), diisopropanolamine (DIPA) and tetramethylensulfone (TMS) to predict solubility of CO2 in mixed aqueous solution (especially in binary and ternary mixtures) over wide...

    , Article International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology ; Vol. 73, issue. 1-4 , 2014 , pp. 487-496 ; ISSN: 02683768 Entezari, A. R ; Karimi, B ; Kianfar, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, we have developed a production planning and marketing model in unreliable flexible manufacturing systems with inconstant demand rate that its rate depends on the level of advertisement on that product. The proposed model is more realistic and useful from a practical point of view. The flexible manufacturing system is composed of two machines that produce a single product. Markovian models frequently have been used in modeling a wide variety of real-world systems under uncertainties. Therefore, in this paper, the inventory balance equation is represented by a continuous-time model with Markov jump process to take into account machines breakdown. The objective is to minimize the...

Numerical study of the effects of process parameters on tool life in a cold radial forging process

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Vol. 21, issue. 2 , 2014 , p. 339-346 Afrasiab, H ; Movahhedy, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Radial forging is an open die forging process used for reducing the diameters of shafts, tubes, stepped shafts and axles, and for creating internal profiles in tubes. Due to very large forging loads, the tool should withstand high stress and wear. Therefore, the success of the forging process depends upon recognition of the die failure factors and optimization of the tool working conditions that enhance tool life. In this study, the effect of process parameters on tool life in the cold radial forging process is investigated using nonlinear three dimensional finite element modeling. Wear and mechanical fatigue are considered as the main modes of tool failure, and a parametric study on the...

Dynamics of bistable initially curved shallow microbeams: Effects of the electrostatic fringing fields

    , Article IEEE/ASME International Conference on Advanced Intelligent Mechatronics, AIM ; July , 2014 , p. 1279-1283 Tajaddodianfar, F ; Yazdiو M. H ; Pishkenariو H. N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Effects of fringing electrostatic fields on the behavior of a double clamped initially curved microbeam are investigated. Galerkin's decomposition method is applied on the governing Euler-Bernoulli equation with distributed electrostatic force to obtain the lumped-parameter model of the system. The resulting single degree of freedom model is obtained with the Palmer's formula as a model for the fringing field effects. To derive an applied form of the fringing field effect in lumped model, we have used Genetic Algorithms as an optimization method. Then using the lumped model, we have investigated the system nonlinear dynamics. Comparison of the obtained bifurcation diagrams with the...

    , Article International Journal of Sustainable Energy ; Vol. 33, issue. 4 , 2014 , p. 854-868 Roshandel, R ; Behzadi Forough, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper focuses on multi-objective optimisation (MOO) to optimise the planar solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stacks performance using a genetic algorithm. MOO problem does not have a single solution, but a complete Pareto curve, which involves the optional representation of possible compromise solutions. Here, two pairs of different objectives are considered as distinguished strategies. Optimisation of the first strategy predicts a maximum power output of 108.33 kW at a breakeven per-unit energy cost of 0.51 $/kWh and minimum breakeven per-unit energy cost of 0.30 $/kWh at a power of 42.18 kW. In the second strategy, maximum efficiency of 63.93%at a breakeven per-unit energy cost of 0.42...

Semi-active control of forced oscillations in power transmission lines via optimum tuneable vibration absorbers: With review on linear dynamic aspects

    , Article International Journal of Mechanical Sciences ; Vol. 87, issue , 2014 , p. 163-178 Asmari Saadabad, N ; Moradi, H ; Vossoughi, G ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Due to flexibility, relatively small weight and low energy-dissipative characteristics of cables, they are vulnerable to external excitations such as wind, wind-rain, earthquake and traffic loadings. Among them, galloping phenomenon is one of the most important sources of electrical/mechanical failures in power transmission lines. In this paper, tuneable vibration absorbers (TVAs) are used to suppress galloping forced vibrations (as a semi-active control approach). Using mode summation technique, mathematical model of the hybrid problem including the transmission line and an arbitrary number of absorbers is presented. Developing a sophisticated multi-loops optimization algorithm, best values...

    Abstract
The problem of Rapid Transit Network Design (RTND) is studied in this paper. Due to the noticeable contribution of rapid transit lines in public transportation network of large urban areas, this problem is interesting to the transportation specialists. On the other hand, the success stories of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems in different countries have motivated us to study BRT network planning. BRT systems can be developed with less investment costs and construction time in comparison with rail-based systems. Therefore, planning Bus Rapid Transit lines, either to develop a new rapid transit network or extend a current one can be an interesting research topic. This problem, like other...

    , Article Chemical Engineering and Technology ; Volume 36, Issue 10 , 2013 , Pages 1691-1700 ; 09307516 (ISSN) Fattahi, M ; Kazemeini, M ; Khorasheh, F ; Darvishi, A ; Rashidi, A. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
An industrial-scale reactor for ethylene production was modeled using the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane (ODHE) in a multi-tubular reactor system, examining a variety of parameters affecting reactor performance. The model showed that a double-bed multi-tubular reactor with intermediate air injection scheme was superior to a single-bed design, due to the increased ethylene selectivity while operating under lower oxygen partial pressures. The optimized reactor length for 100% oxygen conversion was theoretically determined for both reactor designs. The use of a distributed oxygen feed with a limited number of injection points indicated a significant improvement on the reactor performance...

    Abstract
This paper presents a detailed frequency-domain system identification method applied to identify steering dynamics of a coastal patrol vessel using a data analysis software called CIFER. Advanced features such as the Chirp-Z transform and composite window optimization are used to extract high quality frequency responses. An accurate, robust and linear transfer function model is derived for yaw and roll dynamics of the vessel. To evaluate the accuracy of the identified model, time domain responses from a 45-45 zig-zag test are compared with the responses predicted by the identified model. The identified model shows excellent predictive capability and is well suited for simulation and...

    Abstract
In the present study, we developed a multi-component one-dimensional mathematical model for simulation and optimisation of a commercial catalytic slurry reactor for the direct synthesis of dimethyl ether (DME) from syngas and CO2, operating in a churn-turbulent regime. DME productivity and CO conversion were optimised by tuning operating conditions, such as superficial gas velocity, catalyst concentration, catalyst mass over molar gas flow rate (W/F), syngas composition, pressure and temperature. Reactor modelling was accomplished utilising mass balance, global kinetic models and heterogeneous hydrodynamics. In the heterogeneous flow regime, gas was distributed into two bubble phases: small...

Analyzing price, warranty length, and service capacity under a fuzzy environment: Genetic algorithm and fuzzy system

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 20, Issue 3 , 2013 , Pages 975-982 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Mahmoudi, A ; Shavandi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
In this article, we propose a bi-objective model for the pricing-queuing problem under a fuzzy environment. We consider two objectives: maximizing the profit function and minimizing the waiting time in queue. Imagine a firm which sells a product in a channel providing after sales services. The sales price and warranty length affect customer demand. We formulate the demand function as a fuzzy system considering the sales price and warranty length. The firm optimizes the sales price and warranty length, as well as waiting time, in the queue of after sales services, to maximize its revenues and minimize waiting time. To solve the derived model, we develop a hybrid solution method of a fuzzy...

    , Article Journal of Computer and System Sciences ; Volume 79, Issue 4 , 2013 , Pages 492-513 ; 00220000 (ISSN) Arjomand, M ; Amiri, S. H ; Sarbazi Azad, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Network-on-Chips are now the popular communication medium to support inter-IP communications in complex on-chip systems with tens to hundreds IP cores. Higher scalability (compared to the traditional shared bus and point-to-point interconnects), throughput, and reliability are among the most important advantages of NoCs. Moreover, NoCs can well match current CAD methodologies mainly relying on modular and reusable structures with regularity of structural pattern. However, since NoCs are resource-limited, determining how to distribute application load over limited on-chip resources (e.g. switches, buffers, virtual channels, and wires) in order to improve the metrics of interest and satisfy...

Suppression of nonlinear regenerative chatter in milling process via robust optimal control

    , Article Journal of Process Control ; Volume 23, Issue 5 , 2013 , Pages 631-648 ; 09591524 (ISSN) Moradi, H ; Vossoughi, G ; Movahhedy, M. R ; Salarieh, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
During the milling process, self-excited vibration or chatter adversely affects tool life, surface quality and productivity rate. In this paper, nonlinear cutting forces of milling process are considered as a function of chip thickness with a complete third order polynomial (instead of the common linear dependency). An optimal control strategy is developed for chatter suppression of the system described through nonlinear delay differential equations. Counterbalance forces exerted by actuators in x and y directions are the control inputs. For optimal control problem, an appropriate performance index is defined such that the regenerative chatter is suppressed while control efforts are...

    Abstract
The normal human running has been simulated by two-dimensional biped model with 7 segments. Series of normal running experiments were performed and data of ground reaction forces measured by force plate was analyzed and was fitted to some Fourier series. The model is capable to simulate running for different ages and weights at different running speeds. A proportional derivative control algorithm was employed to grant stabilization during each running step. For calculation of control algorithm coefficients, an optimization method was used which minimized cinematic differences between normal running model and that of the experimentally obtained from running cycle data. This yielded the...
