Water drop impact on a semi-cylindrical convex hot surface for a diameter ratio of unity

    , Article Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science ; Volume 106 , 2019 , Pages 68-77 ; 08941777 (ISSN) Jowkar, S ; Morad, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
When a liquid drop impacts on a hot non-flat surface the curvature of the surface and its geometrical characteristics transmute the physical regimes and their boundary compared to a flat surface impact. The present experimental study is focused on water drop impingement on a mimetic solid semi-cylindrical convex hot surface, with a size equal to the drop. The thermal versus inertia map of generated regimes is obtained, while some well-known regimes associated with a flat surface are not observed for the present non-flat impacts. These include rebounding of the main drop and atomization which are common observed phenomena when the hot surface is flat. The maximum spreading of the droplet is...

Velocity field reconstruction in the mixing region of swirl sprays using general regression neural network

    , Article Journal of Fluids Engineering, Transactions of the ASME ; Volume 127, Issue 1 , 2005 , Pages 14-23 ; 00982202 (ISSN) Ghorbanian, K ; Soltani, M. R ; Morad, M. R ; Ashjaee, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A general regression neural network technique is proposed for design optimization of pressure-swirl injectors. Phase doppler anemometry measurements for velocity distributions are used to train the neural network. An overall optimized value for the width of the probability is determined. The velocity field in the extrapolation regime is reconstructed with an accuracy of 93%. Excellent agreement between the predicted values and the measurements is obtained. The results indicate that the capability of performing designand optimization studies for pressure-swirl injectors with sufficient accuracy exists by applying modest amount of data in conjunction with an overall optimized value for the...

Thermo-hydraulic performance enhancement of nanofluid-based linear solar receiver tubes with forward perforated ring steps and triangular cross section; a numerical investigation

    Abstract
Cylindrical pipes are installed to a line-focusing solar system with a linear receiver tube for transmitting thermal energy to the working fluid. In this study, the effects of a novel forward ring step inside circular pipes on the heat transfer performance of linear solar receiver tubes were investigated using computational fluid dynamics. The rings are perforated, and their cross section is triangular. Although the applied heat flux is consistent with a solar collector with a linear receiver tube, the analysis can be performed for any given heat flux distribution on circular pipes. The model was verified by comparing the predicted Nusselt numbers to those of the Gnielinski correlation, and...

Stability and breakup of liquid jets: Effect of slight gaseous crossflows and electric fields

    , Article Chemical Engineering Science ; Volume 165 , 2017 , Pages 89-95 ; 00092509 (ISSN) Rajabi, A ; Morad, M. R ; Rahbari, N ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Instability and breakup of a liquid jet under the influence of a gaseous crossflow in the presence of an electric field is investigated. A dispersion relation for disturbances on the jet surface is derived for the combined effects based on pioneer linear stability analysis for low speed limits. Effects of Weber, Bond and Ohnesorge numbers on the growth rate of disturbances are studied. The theoretical analysis developed for breakup length is used for comparisons with experimentally obtained breakup lengths. Measured breakup lengths were predicted satisfactorily by the linear theory in the region of low crossflow velocities (0–4 m/s) and electric field intensities (0–3×105 V/m). © 2017...

Spray characteristics of a liquid-liquid coaxial swirl atomizer at different mass flow rates

    , Article Aerospace Science and Technology ; Volume 9, Issue 7 , 2005 , Pages 592-604 ; 12709638 (ISSN) Soltani, M. R ; Ghorbanian, K ; Ashjaee, M ; Morad, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
An experimental investigation is performed to explore the characteristics of sprays produced by a liquid-liquid coaxial swirl injector in a non-combusting environment. Phase Doppler anemometry is used for the measurement of velocity and Sauter Mean Diameter of droplets across and along the injection axis for various inner- and outer mass flow rates. Results of the combined spray are compared with those of inner- and/or outer spray alone. The results indicate that the inner injector has a larger influence on the flow field of the combined spray compared to the outer one. Further, the maximum velocity of the combined spray is close to the center of the spray thickness and the velocity...

Rebounding suppression of droplet impact on hot surfaces: Effect of surface temperature and concaveness

    Abstract
When a droplet impinges on a hot surface it is crucial to increase the contact time or decrease the rebounding distance if the heat transfer between the droplet and the surface is important. This will be more sensitive when the temperature regime is above the Leidenfrost values. The focus of the present experimental study is on the maximum height of drop bouncing after impinging on flat and semi-cylindrical concave surfaces, in particular in terms of surface temperature. It is shown that the behavior of the lamella during the spreading to its maximum diameter has a considerable impact on the maximum height of the drop bouncing. For different impact Weber numbers the map of thermal versus...

    Abstract
Phase Doppler Anemometer (PDA) was used to measure velocity distribution in the mixed spray field of two identical pressure-swirl atomizers placed beside each other. A memory-based network that provides estimates of continuous variables was developed to simulate the results. This general regression neural network (GRNN) is a one-pass learning algorithm with a highly parallel structure and can be used for any multidimensional regression problem, where an assumption of linearity is not justified. The approach is not limited to any particular form and requires no pre-knowledge of the appropriate form that any usual correlation technique requires. The predicted results are in excellent agreement...

Porosity variation below a fluid-porous interface

    , Article Chemical Engineering Science ; Vol. 107 , April , 2014 , pp. 311-316 ; ISSN: 00092509 Khalili, A ; Morad, M. R ; Matyka, M ; Liu, B ; Malekmohammadi, R ; Weise, J ; Kuypers, M. M. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The correct quantification of porosity is essential in all studies pertaining to porous media. A host of existing works employs a constant, bulk value for porosity, even when the porous sample is attached to a free fluid. Since the volume fraction of the solid matrix near the interface region differs from that in the core, the porosity undergoes a spatial variation. Here we present a novel relation for the porosity as a function of depth below the interface, using the concept of surface roughness applied on the classical definition of open porosity. This relation has been verified by computational modeling as well as non-invasive laser experiments. It has been shown that this depth-dependent...

    Abstract
Experiments are performed to investigate the atomization characteristics of mixed-interaction regions of sprays of two swirl injectors installed side by side. Both droplet size and velocity distributions on a plane perpendicular to the axes of the injectors are measured using a PDA system. As a result of the interaction phenomenon, a region of secondary atomization is identified that differs significantly from the hollow region spray of a single swirl injector. A neural network algorithm is used to reconstruct the entire spray field for both droplet size and velocity distribution in extrapolation regimes for injector spacing as well as three dimen sional spatial coordinates. Excellent...

On the thermal efficiency of power cycles in finite time thermodynamics

    Abstract
The Carnot, Diesel, Otto, and Brayton power cycles are reconsidered endoreversibly in finite time thermodynamics (FTT). In particular, the thermal efficiency of these standard power cycles is compared to the well-known results in classical thermodynamics. The present analysis based on FTT modelling shows that a reduction in both the maximum and minimum temperatures of the cycle causes the thermal efficiency to increase. This is antithetical to the existing trend in the classical references. Under the assumption of endoreversibility, the relation between the efficiencies is also changed to ηCarnot > ηBrayton > ηDiesel > ηOtto, which is again very different from the corresponding classical...

    Abstract
A general regression neural network technique is applied for design optimization of liquid-liquid coaxial swirl injectors. Phase Doppler Anemometry measurements for velocity and SMD distributions for various Reynolds numbers are used to train the neural network to generate the injector's performance map. Excellent agreement between the predicted values and the measurements is obtained. It is observed that by reducing the number of randomly selected training samples to about one third of the number of prediction points, one may reconstruct the velocity field in the extrapolation regime with an accuracy of 93%. Abstract
Radial Basis Function, a neural network based interpolation method, is used to simulate swirling spray phenomenon. From this model, the profile of mean velocity components' distribution along the main axis of the injector at various pressure drops and spray measurements' plane are obtained and analyzed. Experimental data obtained through Phase Doppler Anemometer is used to train this model. The results are compared with experimental data as well as to those obtained through General Regression Neural Network method as another neural network based interpolation method investigated previously by the authors. © 2003 by M.R. Abstract
This paper deals with numerical modeling of two-phase liquid jet breakup using the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method. Simulation of multiphase flows involving fluids with a high-density ratio causes large pressure gradients at the interface and subsequently divergence of numerical solutions. A modified procedure extended by Monaghan and Rafiee is employed to stabilize the sharp interface between the fluids. Various test cases such as Rayleigh-Taylor instability, two-phase still water and air bubble rising in water have been conducted, by which the capability of accurately capturing the physics of multiphase flows is verified. The results of these simulations are in a good...

Low flow rate spray cooling by a flow blurring injector

    Abstract
Spray cooling characteristics of a flow blurring injector are investigated experimentally. Variations of the flow rates and the distance from the nozzle to the test surface are examined in terms of the cooling heat flux. The liquid flow rate is varied from 200 to 1200 mL/h. The effect of the air flow rate from 6 to 18 L/min is also studied and heat transfer coefficients are obtained. Depending on different effective parameters, the maximum cooling heat flux is measured between 61 and 193 W/cm2. Owing to formation of fine droplets at higher air flow rates, the maximum cooling heat flux is improved by about 60%. The present data is generated for a flow blurring type of injector to have four...

    Abstract
A general regression neural network technique was applied to design optimization of a liquid-liquid coaxial swirl injector. Phase Doppler Anemometry measurements were used to train the neural network. A general regression neural network was employed to predict droplet velocity and Sauter mean diameter at any axial or radial position for the operating range of a liquid-liquid coaxial swirl injector. The results predicted by neural network agreed satisfactorily with the experimental data. A general performance map of the liquid-liquid coaxial swirl (LLCS) injector was generated by converting the predicted result to actual fuel/oxidizer ratios. © 2008 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Liquid jet trajectory and droplet path influenced by combined cross flow and electric fields

    , Article Chemical Engineering Science ; Volume 181 , 18 May , 2018 , Pages 114-121 ; 00092509 (ISSN) Rajabi, A ; Morad, M. R ; Rahbari, N ; Pejman Sereshkeh, S. R ; Razavi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This study investigates an ethanol liquid jet subjected to combination of an air crossflow and a normal electric field. The results on the liquid jet trajectory and subsequent droplets flight paths are presented. The liquid jet trajectory was found as a function of two non-dimensional quantities; the liquid jet to the crossflow momentum ratio and the electroinertial number. The electroinertial number is defined as the ratio between the liquid jet specific momentum and the electric force. A correlation is introduced for the jet trajectory in low crossflow speeds and electric field intensities. The same two quantities control the detached droplets flight paths. Satellite droplets flight angles...

    Abstract
The behavior of an electrified liquid jet breakup and modes of disintegration were investigated at different flow rates and voltages. The current phenomenology belongs to a new injector introduced recently by Morad et al. (2016). This injector has proven to highly extend the stability and flow rate of electrospray particularly in the Taylor cone-jet mode. The experimental investigation was performed using a high-power light-emitting diode (LED) illumination as the light source. The light source was developed to operate in the pulsing condition when synchronized with a digital camera and was particularly designed to function properly in the presence of high electromagnetic interference (EMI)....

Heat transfer characteristics of high flow rate electrospray and droplet cooling

    Abstract
Electrospray cooling is experimentally examined for high volumetric flow rates (80 mL/h) stabilized by a novel hemispherical nozzle. Stability of the Taylor cone-jet mode of this nozzle is increased by interaction of the discharging liquid with the outer wall of a hemispherical cap, installed at the tip of a simple nozzle. The liquid can then be discharged at high flow rates at the same mode. The liquid is ethanol and the test surface temperature as well as the cooling heat flux are measured. The results of the surface temperature, the heat flux and the heat transfer coefficient are compared between the three cases. The first and main case is the electrospray using the novel hemispherical...

    Abstract
An experimental investigation of the flow field of pressure swirl atomizers for different pressure drops is performed. Two experimental methods are employed. For low injection pressures, a visual study is conducted while for higher pressures the velocity components and size of the droplets are measured by using Phase Doppler Anemometer. The spray formation, spray cone angle, and breakup length are visually investigated. Velocity and size of the droplets are measured on a plane of measurement along the axis of the spray so that the properties are carried out in a radial direction as a function of both pressure drop and axial distance from the nozzle. Self-similar mean axial velocity profiles...
