    Abstract
Power systems are undergoing significant transformations due to the introduction of microgrids (MGs) and distributed energy resources (DERs). In this regard, MGs as new entities in the system facilitate the integration of independently operated DERs to the power system. In this structure, DERs would be operated by independent agents, while the microgrid's control unit (MCU) would coordinate agents' resource scheduling to maximize social welfare. In this structure, the uncertainty of resources operated by agents could lead to real-time energy imbalance in the MG resulting in agents' loss of profits. Consequently, a novel transactive-based-scheme is developed in this article to facilitate...

    Abstract
Recently, due to the restructuring of power systems and the high penetration level of local renewables, distribution systems have encountered with the complexity of power management. Therefore, the modern systems would be operated in a multi-agent structure which facilitates the power management as well as privacy protections of independent entities. In this structure, the distribution system is assumed to compose of several agents who independently schedule their local resources in order to maximize their own profits. Consequently, this paper provides an efficient peer-to-peer (P2P) active power management framework in a multi-agent distribution system while considering network constraints...

A new management framework for mitigating intense ramping in distribution systems

    , Article Energy ; Volume 254 , 2022 ; 03605442 (ISSN) Fattaheian Dehkordi, S ; Abbaspour, A ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Lehtonen, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
Nowadays, the increasing integration of variable renewable energies (VREs) in power systems have resulted in operational transformations of energy systems. Respectively, the high-amount of integrated VREs could cause severe-ramping in the net-load of energy systems due to abrupt changes in their power production. Accordingly, based on the limited flexibility capacity in transmission systems, severe ramping-up/down (RU/RD) in distribution systems should be addressed by employing local flexible resources (LFRs). Nevertheless, evolution of multi-agent structured distribution systems has limited the direct access of distribution system operators (DSOs) in scheduling of LFRs. Consequently, this...

Optimal energy management of distribution networks in post-contingency conditions

    , Article International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems ; Volume 141 , 2022 ; 01420615 (ISSN) Fattaheian Dehkordi, S ; Tavakkoli, M ; Abbaspour, A ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Lehtonen, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Emergence of reformation and privatization in energy systems has caused the development of multi-agent distribution systems. In this context, each agent as an independent entity aims to efficiently operate its respective resources; while, the distribution network operator (DNO) strives to control the grid in an efficient and reliable manner. Respectively, in case of failure incidences in the grid, DNO should address the economic losses as well as reliability concerns of the agents. Consequently, this paper intends to organize a framework that enables the DNO in order to incentivize the cooperation of agents to alleviate operational effects of the contingency condition. Accordingly, DNO...

    Abstract
In this paper, a multi-agent framework is proposed to address the expansion planning problem in a restructured active distribution network. In this framework, the objective and techno-economic constraints of participating agents are addressed in the expansion planning of power network and DER assets as well as the network and DERs optimal operation management. The agents include distributed generator owners and load aggregators which participate along with the distribution network operator (DNO) in the active distribution network planning. The proposed framework is formulated as a bi-level optimization problem with multi-lower levels in which the DNO optimizes the network expansion planning...

    , Article European Journal of Control ; Volume 66 , 2022 ; 09473580 (ISSN) Mohit, M ; Shahrokhi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
In this work, an adaptive fixed-time controller has been designed for a class of uncertain non-strict feedback multi-agent systems (MASs) subject to different types of input nonlinearities, time-varying asymmetric state constraints, unknown control directions, infinite number of actuator faults and external disturbances. Compared to the existing consensus control schemes, the proposed controller can handle input nonlinearities, actuator faults and unknown control directions simultaneously, while guaranteeing fixed-time convergence of the consensus tracking error and satisfying state constraints for non-strict feedback MASs. By employing a nonlinear mapping, the constrained MAS has been...

Cooperative fixed-time/finite-time distributed robust optimization of multi-agent systems

    , Article Automatica ; Volume 142 , 2022 ; 00051098 (ISSN) Firouzbahrami, M ; Nobakhti, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
A new robust continuous-time optimization algorithm for distributed problems is presented which guarantees fixed-time convergence. The algorithm is based on a Lyapunov function technique and applied to a class of problems with coupled local cost functions. The algorithm applies a methodology with no expansion of the local variables. This reduces the computation complexities of the solution and improves scalability. Using an integral sliding mode strategy we incorporate effective disturbances rejection on the decision variables as experienced in a wide range of industrial applications. It is shown that the algorithm can easily be modified to a finite-time solution when evaluations of the...

Time-varying formation tracking for noisy multi-agent systems with unknown leader trajectory

, Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Part I: Journal of Systems and Control Engineering ; Volume 236, Issue 7 , 2022 , Pages 1386-1399 ; 09596518 (ISSN) Zaeri Amirani, M ; Bigdeli, N ; Haeri, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    SAGE Publications Ltd  2022
    Abstract
In this article, time-varying formation tracking problem for multi-agent systems is investigated. It is assumed the number of agents is changing and obstacles should be avoided along the trajectory. In addition, the tracking formation should be reached while the leader trajectory is unknown and communication data are noisy. To reach the desired formation tracking, first, a virtual leader is constructed using the local neighbouring data. Second, the reference signal is created based on the virtual leader and the leader data (which is available for some agents). The data fusion at this stage is done based on Kalman filtering to reduce the effect of communication noise. Third, an integral state...

    Abstract
This article deals with solving distributed optimization problems with equality constraints by a class of uncertain nonlinear heterogeneous dynamic multiagent systems. It is assumed that each agent with an uncertain dynamic model has limited information about the main problem and limited access to the information of the state variables of the other agents. A distributed algorithm that guarantees cooperatively solving of the constrained optimization problem by the agents is proposed. Via applying this algorithm, the agents do not need to continuously broadcast their data. It is shown that the proposed algorithm can be useful in solving resource allocation problems. IEEE

ComStreamClust: a communicative multi-agent approach to text clustering in streaming data

    , Article Annals of Data Science ; 2022 ; 21985804 (ISSN) Najafi, A ; Gholipour Shilabin, A ; Dehkharghani, R ; Mohammadpur Fard, A ; Asgari Chenaghlu, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Topic detection is the task of determining and tracking hot topics in social media. Twitter is arguably the most popular platform for people to share their ideas with others about different issues. One such prevalent issue is the COVID-19 pandemic. Detecting and tracking topics on these kinds of issues would help governments and healthcare companies deal with this phenomenon. In this paper, we propose a novel, multi-agent, communicative clustering approach, so-called ComStreamClust for clustering sub-topics inside a broader topic, e.g., the COVID-19 and the FA CUP. The proposed approach is parallelizable, and can simultaneously handle several data-point. The LaBSE sentence embedding is used...

DMAIDPS: a distributed multi-agent intrusion detection and prevention system for cloud IoT environments

    , Article Cluster Computing ; 2022 ; 13867857 (ISSN) Javadpour, A ; Pinto, P ; Ja’fari, F ; Zhang, W ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer  2022
    Abstract
Cloud Internet of Things (CIoT) environments, as the essential basis for computing services, have been subject to abuses and cyber threats. The adversaries constantly search for vulnerable areas in such computing environments to impose their damages and create complex challenges. Hence, using intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDPSs) is almost mandatory for securing CIoT environments. However, the existing IDPSs in this area suffer from some limitations, such as incapability of detecting unknown attacks and being vulnerable to the single point of failure. In this paper, we propose a novel distributed multi-agent IDPS (DMAIDPS) that overcomes these limitations. The learning agents in...

Agent-based time delay margin in consensus of multi-agent systems by an event-triggered control method: Concept and computation

    , Article Asian Journal of Control ; 2022 ; 15618625 (ISSN) Hosseini, S.H ; Tavazoei, M. S ; Kuznetsov, N. V ; Sharif University of Technology
John Wiley and Sons Inc  2022
    Abstract
This paper deals with defining the concept of agent-based time delay margin and computing its value in multi-agent systems controlled by event-triggered based controllers. The agent-based time delay margin specifying the time delay tolerance of each agent for ensuring consensus in event-triggered controlled multi-agent systems can be considered as complementary for the concept of (network) time delay margin, which has been previously introduced in some literature. In this paper, an event-triggered control method for achieving consensus in multi-agent systems with time delay is considered. It is shown that the Zeno behavior is excluded by applying this method. Then, in a multi-agent system...

Optimal equilibrium selection of price-maker agents in performance-based regulation market

    , Article Journal of Modern Power Systems and Clean Energy ; Volume 10, Issue 1 , 2022 , Pages 204-212 ; 21965625 (ISSN) Rayati, M ; Sheikhi, A ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Sun, W ; Sharif University of Technology
State Grid Electric Power Research Institute Nanjing Branch  2022
    Abstract
This paper analyzes the oligopolistic equilibria of multiple price-maker agents in performance-based regulation (PBR) markets. In these markets, there are price-maker agents representing some frequency regulation (FR) providers and a number of independent price-taker FR providers. A model of equilibrium problem with equilibrium constraints (EPECs) is employed in this paper to study the equilibria of a PBR market in the presence of price-maker agents and price-taker FR providers. Due to the incorporation of the FR providers' dynamics, the proposed model is reformulated as a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem over innovative mathematical techniques. An optimal equilibrium point is...

A multi-agent deep reinforcement learning framework for algorithmic trading in financial markets

    , Article Expert Systems with Applications ; Volume 208 , 2022 ; 09574174 (ISSN) Shavandi, A ; Khedmati, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
Algorithmic trading based on machine learning is a developing and promising field of research. Financial markets have a complex, uncertain, and dynamic nature, making them challenging for trading. Some financial theories, such as the fractal market hypothesis, believe that the markets behave based on the collective psychology of investors who trade with different investment horizons and interpretations of information. Accordingly, a multi-agent deep reinforcement learning framework is proposed in this paper to trade on the collective intelligence of multiple agents, each of which is an expert trader on a specific timeframe. The proposed framework works in a hierarchical structure in which...

    Abstract
In this article, a novel cooperative secondary voltage/frequency control considering time-varying delays and noises in fading channels is presented for an autonomous alternating current (AC) voltage sourced-based converter (VSC)-based microgrid (MG), including inverter-interfaced distributed generations (DGs). Fading phenomenon makes complex random fluctuations on the voltage and frequency of every DG received from its neighbor DGs. In multi-agent cooperative systems, in addition to the total additive noise and time-variant delay, a multiplicative complex random variable is considered to model the main received signal and its replicas due to multipath propagation. The proposed...

Distributed detection and mitigation of biasing attacks over multi-agent networks

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Network Science and Engineering ; Volume 8, Issue 4 , 2021 , Pages 3465-3477 ; 23274697 (ISSN) Doostmohammadian, M ; Zarrabi, H ; Rabiee, H. R ; Khan, U. A ; Charalambous, T ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper proposes a distributed attack detection and mitigation technique based on distributed estimation over a multi-agent network, where the agents take partial system measurements susceptible to (possible) biasing attacks. In particular, we assume that the system is not locally observable via the measurements in the direct neighborhood of any agent. First, for performance analysis in the attack-free case, we show that the proposed distributed estimation is unbiased with bounded mean-square deviation in steady-state. Then, we propose a residual-based strategy to locally detect possible attacks at agents. In contrast to the deterministic thresholds in the literature assuming an upper...

Planning of multi-hub energy system by considering competition issue

    , Article International Journal of Sustainable Energy Planning and Management ; Volume 30 , 2021 , Pages 5-20 ; 22462929 (ISSN) Farshidian, B ; Rajabi Ghahnavieh, A ; Haghi, E ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Energy hub concept has been emerged as a suitable tool to analyze multi-carrier energy systems. Deregulation and increasing competition in the energy industry have provided a suitable platform for developing the multi-agent energy systems. Planning of energy hubs considering the competition between the hubs has not been sufficiently addressed, yet. A model has been proposed in this study for planning of a multi-hub energy system considering the competition between the hubs. The hubs are interconnected via an electric transmission system. A linear model has been developed to determine the optimal planning/operation strategy for energy hubs in a multi-period planning horizon to meet the heat...

An incentive-based mechanism to alleviate active power congestion in a multi-agent distribution system

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid ; Volume 12, Issue 3 , 2021 , Pages 1978-1988 ; 19493053 (ISSN) Fattaheian Dehkordi, S ; Tavakkoli, M ; Abbaspour, A ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Lehtonen, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Increasing the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) inspired by environmental and governmental incentives, beside the introduction of multi-agent structure perspective have led to a paradigm shift of operational conditions in distribution systems. In this context, the traditional concept of fit and forget in the distribution grid management would not be efficient in the modern distribution systems and consequently new mechanisms should be developed in order to enable the distribution system operator (DSO) to efficiently manage the grid congestion caused by peak power output of DERs or load demands requests. In this article, the Stackelberg game concept is employed to develop an...

A new framework for mitigating voltage regulation issue in active distribution systems considering local responsive resources

    , Article IEEE Access ; Volume 9 , 2021 , Pages 152585-152594 ; 21693536 (ISSN) Fattaheian Dehkordi, S ; Abbaspour, A ; Mazaheri, H ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Lehtonen, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Recently, renewable energy sources (RESs) have increasingly being integrated into the power grids as a result of environmental and governmental perspectives. In this regard, the installation of RESs as potential power sources in active distribution systems would benefit the grid by decreasing the power losses, as well as addressing the fossil fuel shortages, and their environmental aspects. Nevertheless, the high-level integration of RESs as well as the development of distributed formations in local systems could challenge the reliable operation of the grid. In this context, conventional approaches could not optimally mitigate the regulation-voltage issue; therefore, utilities have to...
