    Abstract
    Utilizing ultrashort light pulses in optical communication systems can enhance the data rate or throughput in multiple access telecommunication systems. One of the most important challenges in ultrashort light pulse communication systems is the detection of such pulses among various types of noise in the receiver with conventional band-limited photodetectors which is proved to degrade the detection performance considerably. To overcome the aforementioned obstacle, contriving nonlinear optical preprocessors prior to the photodetector at the receiver is suggested.     In this thesis, we investigate the previously introduced Code-Shifted Reference (CSR) time hopping (TH) ultra-wideband (UWB) communication systems as a potential transmitted scheme reference technique. In this system, the orthogonality between the reference and data bearing signals is acquired in code domain. Also, we consider a simple scheme to clean to obtain a clean template to be used in the correlator receiver for the CSR –UWB, this method was used in UWB system before. Memory introduced by temporal correlation of optical fading process precludes us from using the Markov chain model for a code acquisition analysis.     Overloaded code division multiple access being the only means of the capacity extension for conventional code division multiple access accommodates more number of signatures than the spreading gain. Recently, ternary Signature Matrices with Orthogonal Subsets (SMOS) has been proposed, where the capacity maximization is 200%. The proposed multi-user detector using matched filter exploits the twin tree hierarchy of correlation among the subsets to guarantee the errorless recovery.     In this paper, we analyze the capacity region of a communication network where a Multiple Access Channel (MAC) and a point-to-point channel share a same medium and interfere with each other, where the transmitter of the point-to-point channel has cognitive capabilities. We introduce Multiple Access-Cognitive Interference Channel (MA-CIFC), with a two-user MAC as a primary network and a cognitive transmitter-receiver pair in which the cognitive transmitter knows the message being sent by all of the transmitters in a non-causal manner.     In this paper, we analyze the sensitivity degradation of a system due to various orders of chromatic dispersion. To do this, the power penalty of the uncoded and encoded pulse of a coherent ultrashort light pulse Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) communication system due to various orders of chromatic dispersions are analyzed. Analysis of uncoded pulse shows that the power penalty is unacceptably high when second order dispersion is not compensated.     Abstract
    In this paper, we consider the application of Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes in multi-carrier frequency-hopping (MC-FH) CDMA systems. We evaluate the performance of the coded system in a slowly Rayleigh fading frequency-selective channel using different construction methods of regular LDPC codes. We then compare the results with those of the Super-Orthogonal coded system. Our simulation results show that the LDPC coded scheme significantly outperforms the uncoded and the Super-Orthogonal coded scheme.     We consider an internally coded time-hopping coherent ultrashort light pulse code division multiple access scheme (TH-CULP CDMA) and analyze its performance in the fiber-optic communication systems.
